To commemorate 100 years of Japanese anime history, NHK has announced a list of 100 Best Anime on Wednesday at NHK BS Premium. The list is based on the audience's votes regarding their best anime that aired until September 2016; which was held between January 8 to March 31, 2017. The 3-hour program featured seiyuu interviews, promotional videos, polls, anime clips, commentaries, and talks about the industry in-between rankings. A variety of anime were also honorably mentioned but are not ranked such as Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni and Yuri!!! On ICE.

You can find more about these anime if you click the myanimelist article! I find this list extremely interesting because it basically tells you what anime has a huge and loud fanbase and POPULARITY in Japan.

I looked over the top 100 NHK anime list myself, I say it's pretty accurate in terms of Japanese popularity. There's plenty of critically acclaimed ranked on top pretty fairly, but there's also some anime based on sheer popularity like Detective Conan. Good list, will definitely bookmark it for the future so I can watch some of these anime in the future.

What do you think about it? Let's discuss the interesting rankings for certain anime and think about why Japan ranks them high. This poll was huge and trending when I was on Twitter, so I assume a HUGE amount of voters in Japan when in voted for their favorite anime. I hear NHK is basically the equivalent of BBC, which I assume means it's a very popular Japanese channel.

I'm mainly familiar with stuff in the middle and the end of that list, but they sure are a fan of whatever Tiger & Bunny and Love Live are.

Japan needs to learn how to keep top lists to 1 show in a series/work. Tiger and Bunny 3 times in the top 10 is ridiculous.

I do not understand the love Mahou Shoujo Madoka get's, at all, It's not bad but it's as derivative and cliched as 95% of the trash heap of Anime.

Gintama at 11. Awesome especially since Naruto or Bleach isn't even on the list :p

I watched the sub of CCS when I was around 13. I recall it was really good.

Code Geass. The twist at the end end was pretty cool, it sticks in your head.

I never knew Code Geass and CardCaptor Sakura were that popular.

Also Pokemon being so low and Dragonball not even being on the list is shocking.

It's cool to see Digimon being so high up though, the Japanese version definitely is much better than the dub.

They really fucking did. I loved that first season so much and they had the perfect lead-in for a S2.

It's a shame it feels really overlooked/underrated outside of Japan.

Vote in lists are dumb in my opinion because you'll inevitably get the winning series to be ones with super rabid fanbases rather than quality or broad appeal. I mean series like One Piece or Dragonball are way more popular than some of the ones at the top of the list, but they rank lower because their appeal is less focused on one of the hardcore otaku niches

Here comes the rigorous and civil debate about why "___" is superior to all 100 shows listed.

I've watched about 10 of these to completion, and dozens more that I consider to be great that aren't listed.

I'm surprised the Gintama anime ranked higher with men than women, given other polls show that women really liking Gintama

I remember being excited for Tiger and Bunny, then Viz licensed it so I was gonna watch the blue rays when they came out and then I didn't care any more. Maybe I should fix that. /sigh.

I have never heard of Tiger & Bunny.

Happy that Clannad: After Story is the top ranked KyoAni studio series. Dangos for everyone. Don't see why they make selections or different seasons though. Seems to take away from some other entries. Pretty cool how different this is compared to what a GAF 100 would look like. Or just the West in general.

EDIT: Good on Hyouka too. Seems to be a little more quiet in the West about that show. And my first ever anime love (after thinking it was not for me because I didn't care for DBZ type of stuff which is what I would always see on Cartoon Network after school) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in the top 50. Nice nice.

Osomatsu-san being top 10 makes me happy (apparently popular with women as well) but Urusei Yatsura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer being all the way at #94 is a crime.
