If you like them and want to stay friends, avoid the topic.

Pirates have a whole line of pseudologic to justify not paying for the things they want which they absolutely will trot out at the slightest sign of judgement. At the end of the day, it's just not worth arguing about.

Can't blame them, we're living in an age where there's little-to-no reason to buy overpriced, and often unfinished products, especially the SP-only titles like your friend says. Even if you do buy a game it's still better to install crack over the original copy, that's how bad situation is.

They pirate stuff, so what? Even if they would actually buy it if they couldn't pirate they are doing something with the money not spent on games. Does that enable them to increase the financial security for their families? Or are they instead spending it on unnecessary indulgences like a more luxurious car than a Honda or Toyota? That context is important. Or is it really that they use the money saved by pirating to fund mobile bullshit? If a significant portion of the gaming audience did this, it would be awful. I hope it is anecdotal and your friends just avoid spending money where they can, similar to how they would shop around for the best deal on a purchase. They are not actively robbing someone, they are taking the easy route to avoid paying for it through legitimate channels.

If they truly do prefer multiplayer/mobile games and pay for that, are they actually playing through all the games they pirate? Maybe they do just try them for a couple of hours and go back to the game they like. If they really don't enjoy them enough to finish them, they would never buy them in the first place. If they finish all or most of the games they pirate, then it is likely that they would buy some, but not all, if they had no means to pirate. Perhaps you could convince them to gift someone a copy of the games they enjoyed the most when the price falls.

They are in their 30s and 40s, people really do not change at this age.
Anything is possible. I came to my senses at the age of 35 or so.

Piracy is stealing. Plain and simple. It does nothing good. Software piracy has killed and crippled many of my favorite PC game studios.

Clarissa Clarissa Good post. I'm behind you 100% 👍

I used to pirate when I was still at school when I had like zero money, we where poor. It was such a hassle sometimes, I remember having to install steam emulators and all kinds of stuff to get games working.
But after I started working it became much easier just to buy the games I wanted to play. What else was I going to spend my money on? Woman? Pfft. My little nerd brain didn't know what to do with them.

Anyway seems strange that presumably well to do people will still go through the hassle of finding cracks etc. Unless it has become far easier.

Yeah that's the irony. The ones earning the most are the ones doing all the pirating, saying such things like video games do not deserve their money. Whereas the ones making just a decent living are the ones paying for all their games.

Ask them if they'd steal a car, steal a handbag, steal a television, and steal a (physical) movie. And when they say:
They wouldn't steal a car
They wouldn't steal a handbag
They wouldn't steal a television
They wouldn't steal a (physical) movie

Then hit them with:
"DOWNLOADING PIRATED GAMES IS STEALING" Also "STEALING IS AGAINST THE LAW"

Otherwise everytime they talk about it say to them: "Do I hear you right? Do I hear what you're saying?; You're gonna make a copy of game without paying? COME ON GUYZ! I thought you knew better DON'T COPY THAT FLOPPY!"

Well single player games on PC are kinda worthless. This is a common stance by PC gamers.

It's always funny when consoles gamers go after eachother with which one has the best single player games, yet on PC nobody cares.

People are going to make their choice, you can't convince them. It's their experience.

In my opinion, pirating today is really silly - the games are cheaper than ever, and if you really want to play the latest GAAS shit, you are getting a much worse experience - even back in college when I pirated BF1942 I had to play on pirate only servers which sucked. But it's their life and it seems they actually do spend money on games they want to play. Maybe they don't like PC games enough to actually want to spend money on it, which is fine.

They don't pirate Nintendo games but pirate everything on playstation and pc? This is fanboyism taken to next level. Hit ps/pc where it hurts the most.

Your friends, my friend, are Trailblazers. I hope dedicated gaffers don't take inspiration.

If you're willing to wear a wire in a sting operation, you could teach them a lesson they'll never forget...

Although I'm convinced games are ridiculously overpriced nowadays, it's Also true they drop to more affordable prices in ridiculously rapid times, at least on ps4

If you play smart, and can wait 2-4 months at least, you can spend 50 dollars and buy 2-4 good games at less than the price of one

With Nintendo platforms, tho... Lol

I don't think he wants to control his mates. He wants to win an argument.
If anything, his mates are controlling him by the fact that he's had to go online to find winning arguments to trump his mates.
same thing, really. winning an argument is mostly about control.

LOL @ "his mates are controlling him" that is some weird calling the kettle black bs

OP needs to lighten the fuck up imo

You can't really impose your own sense of morality on others. Everyone is free to live as they wish.

Ultimately, if you want a "better" world, just be the person you wish everyone else was. Follow your own moral compass. That's all you can do.

I have a game on steam, I've sold 1500 copies or so at 1 dollar a piece, it was up on a piracy site before the official release date (don't know how that happened) and was downloaded like 15,000 times.

I remember people at my former workplace who offered me burned copies of PlayStation games, but I respectfully declined. Not for "moral reasons", but simply because I wanted durable and official media, despite paying more.

There's one of them even saying single player games are not worth buying. He's a huge supporter of mobile games and says that mobile games are worth spending on but not single player games.

that would be the point where I would stop considering them a gamer and stop talking about video games with them 🤷‍♂️

Fuck me if these people knew that acceptable loss or acceptable risk was a concept in business they'd lose their minds

Successful companies have a budget for this already in mind before creating the product, and creating the product INCLUDES having SECURITY in the initial design

It's an acceptable loss which is why they move forward, and this based on assessing the risk and deeming it an acceptable risk

Security practices are created around acceptable risk and acceptable loss

Do you see companies running around swatting down resellers selling their game for more than it should be?
Once I see companies actually advocating for the consumer, as well as reprimanding internally and externally poor practices, I'll be all for wagging a finger at pirates

In the mean time, business is business; secure your shit better if you want a better profit margin. If not, it's literally by design people like me are going to steal your shit

"Moral," people wouldn't steal a car, but you also wouldn't leave your keys in the ignition either (DOOM Eternal, anyone?), now, would you?

Edit: Clarity and added last line
Edit 2: I think people would also be surprised with just how many people who work in IT pirate the shit out of everything they can lol. I have never worked a job where someone doesn't have a pirate data store somewhere, some places we would even host it AT work lol.

Have you tried not arguing with them and just get over it?

it's not their issue, it's your issue.

And we're done here.

Clarissa Clarissa you can explain why you feel like it's morally fucked up, but ultimately everyone has their own moral compass.

And on theirs, playing games without paying is higher on the totem pole than supporting the developers who make the games they enjoy.

I mentioned in my second post that pirating from indie and smaller devs that need all the financial support they can, really sucks.

Now we have digital discounts on games so frequently, why do we even need to pirate?

I just want to see smaller devs rewarded for their hard work.

Honestly OP, most of the people on this forum are gonna say the same thing, which is probably 'Its not your problem, dont worry about it." And they are totally right. It doesn't really affect negatively in any way, except how you view the subject. And I have the same mindset as you, I find it annoying and childish that my friend does the same thing, but he's not as bad as he used to be. Now if he really really likes a game, he will buy it on PS4 if he can find it for a good price. Except if it's a switch games, since he was able to hack his switch he finds literally no reason to buy a single game on that device. But I've gotten a little less stingy about it over the years. What I do like to do though, since I only really have one particular friend who does this, is just ignore him when he talks about the game that I know he pirated (which is easy to tell with him). Pitiful yes, but effective since he loves to say his opinion about whatever he's playing. But when he actually buys the game, I actually engage conversation about said game. And he loves attention, so it usually works him over. Like I said, its childish but hey it works.

Just ignore it, it's not your problem. You can try to convince them, but then you risk souding like a pain in the ass and might have fights if not even lose your friends over something this stupid.
It's like trying to tell to a smoker that they should stop smoking, or a drunkard. They know it's bad, and they dont care and if you continue to preach to them. you will be seen like the bad gay.

A lot of AAAA games are barely worth a rental, and those are most of the games coming to PC.
It's scummy of them if they pirate indies, that's for sure.
Tell me more about these "AAAA" games you've played. I'm intrigued. I don't recall The Initiative releasing anything yet.

Refuse to participate in any multiplayer games with them that they pirate and hold fast to your ideology.

It's their life choice. And if your friends have to face consequences just let them.

And if it comes down to them deciding being friends with you is contingent on pirating games like they do then drop their asses like a hot potato.

Not once have I ever considered whether the media my friends consume was streamed, purchased or pirated. Why would I or you care?

Worry about COVID or something meaningful.
