Sony marketing, whilst being annoying with the lack of news, you have to say they seem to have played a blinder.

They have everyone wanting more after being fed scraps.

It must be a nightmare for Microsoft, how do they one up it? Sony can be silent for days, week or months and then boom...

The poor chaps at Microsoft are probably just as surprised as we are, Sony has turned on completely unpredictable mode.

Is this how Microsoft marketing looks when Sony after much silence suddenly drop something out the blue?

I'm guessing it's because Microsoft had too much confidence in themselves. I basically came to that conclusion after Spencer said he felt good after seeing the PS5. Not to mention they thought their flagship title was ready to show.

Nothing he said really made a lick of sense anyways. He is claiming a "rep" played with the PS5 in front of him, then they showed him a 90 second trailer... and that he.. a low level YouTuber.. had to both sign an NDA and couldn't take any sort of footage...what exactly is the purpose of the visit then? Only reason influencers get involved in something is for promotion, so they show something on a video,etc..

This dude is like those spam emails that say Congratulations this is Sony you’ve won 1,000,000 dollars. Send your details. Some people fall for that and this is why he has 30k followers for tweeting random shit that doesn’t make sense.

Nah just if games are when running on the Series X at this point. But I'm sure we will see actual XSX gameplay soon.

Only thing I care about on that end are games that are likely years off; so yeah, just prove the thing isn't a total failure and show some games running on it lol

Sony is likely to continue the cinematic heavy trailer feel and I'll likely be annoyed at lack of real gameplay but that's better than nothing.

Am still a bit behind here so apologies if posted but I never saw this point from Matt. Just seems to shut down another claim against PS5...

I mean we kind of knew didn't we but for anyone still claiming otherwise...

As long as it doesn't break the power budget it can run at max clocks. That's what I've always understood.

Don't worry we will continue to get gameplay on the actual PS5 from Sony. I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't give a fuck about teardowns, most of the time ...

But I am really, REALLY interested to see the cooling solution they have for the PS5. In the flesh.

I'm really not expecting anything exotic outside of whether you find the liquid metal thermal compound, and the need for it to be contained, exotic. I think the combination of a nice(er) quality HSF and twice as thick case (4 inch instead of PS4's 2 inch) should ensure a much quieter system hopefully.

I guess, if anyone here posted it, I missed the post where Foxy Games UK guy on Twitter (I refuse to post links to "insiders" these days) claims he spent nearly an hour hands on with a PS5... had to sign an NDA embargoed to a specific date... mentions limited quantities of the console which there won't be enough of to go around.

Well, it's plausible I guess. He also had a tweet mentioning something about "8 days" and "PS5"......

Either he's right on, or I will never believe another thing this guy says ever again, even in passing.

Foxy hasn't been tight about much, but didn't a tweet get posted last week that UK "imfluencers" were being invited to a showcase? Foxy could have been invited.

Those "scraps" are all you can eat buffets compared to what Microsoft is doing.
Sony had a solid showing, Microsoft demonstrated they got nothing 3 times

Do you know ICE TEAM? So they are simply the developers of the developers, they who structured a PS3, PS4 API, but also PS5 ... So according to these developers Cell did not have a GPU until 2004, so if you can argue with NaughtDog's ICE TEAM. .

“For a while, [PS3 had] no GPU, it was going to run everything with SPUs. The ICE team proved to Japan that it was just impossible. It would be ridiculous. Performance-wise, it would be a disaster. That’s why they finally added the GPU, closer to the end.”

Another source confirmed that, during the delay, Sony was “still trying to figure out the hardware” it was creating, and mimicked the notion that “for a while, it didn’t even have a GPU," hence the delay. It's important to note that, before PlayStation 3 was even named, there were very early rumors that it may launch in 2005, but by the time it was officially revealed at E3 2005, an accelerated release schedule was likely already abandoned.

I know of the ICE team and I'm aware of the story that led to the RSX. Ken Kutaragi was asked about one aspect of the story in 2005:

IPW: The most surprising thing about the PS3's architecture is that its graphics are not processed by the Cell. Why didn't you make a Cell-based GPU? -- IPW
KK: The Cell's seven Synergistic Processor Elements (SPE) can be used for graphics. In fact, some of the demos at E3 were running without a graphics processor, with all the renderings done with just the Cell. However, that kind of usage is a real waste. There are a lot of other things that should be done with the Cell. One of our ideas was to equip two Cell chips and to use one as a GPU, but we concluded that there were differences between the Cell to be used as a computer chip and as a shader, since a shader should be graphics-specific. The Cell has an architecture where it can do anything, although its SPE can be used to handle things such as displacement mapping. -- Ken Kutaragi

Also, that ICE team dev makes it seem like the initial plan was always for PS3 not to have a dedicated GPU; but because the ICE team showed those dummies in Japan how "ridiculous" it was to run all the graphics on SPUs, SIE decided to reverse course and ask Nvidia to make a GPU instead. If that's what he wants readers to take away, then he is being misleading. From the very beginning, the plan was for PS3 to have a dedicated GPU and Toshiba was supposed to make it. A SCE programmer who wrote one of the real-time demos shown at Sony's 2005 E3 presser said in response to claims that SCE initially intended for CELL to be PS3's GPU:

"No they didn't. Originally Toshiba were developing the RS, which was insanely fast for its time (128 scalar pipes at 1GHz; 16MB eDRAM). When their yields were too low, Sony went to nVidia and obtained RSX." -- Anonymous SCE programmer who shall remain nameless because the specifics of what he said are probably still under NDA, so I'm not going to name drop him

Toshiba's failure to meet yields for the RS, led Kutaragi to explore the idea of equipping two CELLs and using one of them as a GPU. Once they (Kutaragi/his team/the ICE team) concluded CELL couldn't replace a dedicated GPU, Kutaragi went to Nvidia...

But to your point. While I agree that CELL can't flat out beat a dedicated GPU at graphics rendering, it can still give a dedicated GPU a run for its money in certain areas of graphics processing.

And for the APU part, look at the Wikipedia link, and see for yourself, the Emotion Engine was the CPU. And the Graphic Sintetizer was the equivalent of the GPU. They started separately and then were manufactured together ... Unlike Cell, which was designed and manufactured to be a CPU and GPU. In other words, an APU.

CELL wasn't designed to be an APU...

apu-101-all-about-amd-fusion-accelerated-l.jpg

It was designed to be a heterogeneous multi-core CPU...

The reason CELL can effectively and efficiently handle graphics workloads is because its SPEs (CPU cores) were optimized for parallel SIMD computing like GPUs...

True but yet it still feels like scraps and we have so much more to see. Microsoft seem to have showed their hand and way to early on they did it. I'm sure they have more too but yeah nothing on hardware was pathetic.

I feel like all that's left that they GOT to show is price and date.
Also the UI but that's really unimportant.

we already knew this from way back in april when DF ran an article and had developers on the record saying they were running the gpu at max clocks consistently while downclocking the cpu. by how much they didnt say, but downclocking the cpu doesnt give you much so there is plenty of power available for the gpu on its own.
