Why do some devs feel the need for their character to constantly throw out one-liners during fight scenes?
Is it accurate to perhaps blame this type of "narration" design on Uncharted? I feel this sort of thing wasn't prevalent until that series and having Nate constantly quipping during the entire game.

But yeah, when the one-liners become tedious and are poorly written, that detracts from things without a doubt, especially when the delivery of the dialogue is also grating.

I like everything but the combat and your bracelet never shutting up. I hate feeling like I need to wear the headphones to hear all the dialogue cause it's talking to you during combat.
If this combat is just spamming spells, I'm probably out.

Dev: Hey marketing guy, we're ready to show off actual gameplay footage for our game for the first time.
Marketing Guy (MG): Great, can't wait to see feedback on this!
Dev: There's a lot of cool stuff we can show. We can fight dragons, run from monsters in a forest, fly over the...
MG: You guys have like a desert?
Dev: A.. desert?
MG: Yes, just rocks and low vegetation.
Dev: I mean.. yes we have rocks and low vegetation but it's not for...
MG: Great, then get the character to run on rocks, just keep everything brown and dull.
Dev: Just running? How about s...
MG: Just running! Gamers love running from point A to Point B. Make it like half the screentime!
Dev: Ok, how about the fight? We can have this cool fight with an 8 foot ogre that has this giant club..
MG: Fuck ogres, just skim past them. You have zombies?
Dev: Zombies?! Like low-level enemies that just walk awkwardly towards the character?
MG: Yes! That's it! Get her to fight zombies! Gamers can't get enough of smashing zombies!
Dev: Okay :(
MG: This is gonna be such a hit on Youtube now that it doesn't count the unlikes!
The reality:

MG: Are you guys still planning the gameplay trailer for the 6th?
Dev: Sorry, few issues with the current build. Currently in progress, targeting the 15th.

MG (19th): Any news on this guys?
Dev: Currently with creative lead for approval - collating feedback. Should have something by the 25th.

MG (30th): Thanks for the trailer, passing over to legal and brand for approvals. Do you have translations for the end-card legal?
Dev: Sure, will ping over.
MG: Cool, thanks for the SRTs - moving to localisation, three day turnaround, should deliver by the 4th.
Localisation team: Bank holidays in five key regions, okay to deliver on the 6th?

Localisation team (5th): French translators are asking for context on 'Blip'. Can you give more details?
MG: It's a sound effect.
Localisation: Awesome, will pass along.
MG: Have the others delivered?
Localisation: Told them to hold fire until we had clarification. should be back EOP on 6th.
MG: Okay.

Dev (7th): We still good to push tomorrow?
MG: Legal have said we need to update the disclaimers on the end-cards - good for EU but not US.
Dev: How long will that take?
MG: Probably be done by Wednesday.
Dev: Will social still support?
MG: Yeah, but it's a crowded day (couple of big announcements), next week might be better to avoid getting buried.

Dev (14th): I know this was approved but creative have asked us to remove the shot of the mother at 1:19 as it's a potential spoiler.
MG: Sure, sure, we can re-edit - legal has asked us to remove the shot at 0:47 with the gun aimed at the camera as it falls foul of ESRB restrictions.
Dev: What's the time-frame?
MG: I'd say about a week - one of their editors is off with COVID.
Dev: Good to go for the 23rd?
MG: Fingers crossed!

This vid of the game looked pretty bad but the trailer of this game came up on an add right after and looked so much better and more fun to play. There's still 6 months to improve that framerate.

I thought it look bad from the start, sure protag is hot, but what else. Looks like a mess. And it didn't even look good.

But UC was not an open-world game no? So the encounters were less repeatable than in the open world games.
That's a good point about the contrast, because UC was linear so the quips and writing could be scripted and tailored to each encounter. Open-world makes this more prone to being overdone by repetition. Still, I feel this type of "commentator protagonist" had its roots in Uncharted, though it also got a boost from Horizon.

The entire vibe of this game feels like Square had a team spend a month on western social media and then use that knowledge to come up with something to appeal to the west.
So of course it's going to have non stop Uncharted/MCU style one liners. They even went to get some Hollywood and ex Naughty dog writers for this

This is NeoGAF we hate everything here.

Everything looks like shit.
Everything is generic.
Everything should be a locked 60
Everything should be a locked 30
Everything should be 4K
Fuck 4K
Everything cant even handle 120fps
Everything is Gamepass fodder.
Every female protagonist is woke pandering.
Everything is more of the same but when something new comes we dont want it.

This forum isnt about discussing our hobby of gaming, its about shitting on our hobby of gaming....why dont we pick a new hobby you ask?
Well shitting on gaming IS our new hobby.

Woke?
When did being British become a symbol of wokeness?

iI9LkG0.gif

Oh, pleeease..! Build strawman more.
The FF series is full of female protagonist, that has never been an issue with their games. Neither has it been an issue with British accents.

The only thing this game has had going for it are the graphics and the concept trailer.

Perhaps, but it felt natural in Uncharted even if it was a bit cheesy. This is just so incredibly forced.

I won’t get into the character slander or squenix hate wine debate but the biggest issue I see with this game is that it simply does not look fun.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Does she really say "fuck off" at 3:40?

I can't stand that kind of thing, takes me out of the game, specially if she's yelling it 24/7.

I dont care if people call me "weeb" but I VASTLY prefer Granblue Fantasy Relink visual style to this.

Forspoken feels like they are trying too hard to appeal to western audiance.

I guess for me, Japan/East Asia aesthetics still feel that they're at least trying to be "creative" and not "grounded in realism" like everything coming from the West which impacts all aspects of their visual design (aka. women need to be covered head to toe because realism). The worlds that JRPG's create tend to lend themselves better to escapism in that regard IMO.

Pretty much. Sometimes mixing cultures doesn't work that well. You've got to have some pretty insightful direction to pull that off. I can't imagine any of the writers are looking at this and saying "yeah, that's exactly what I had in mind when I wrote that".

Not only that I just CANT stand scan faces in video game, they look decent in screenshot but the moment they try to talk and emote, everything feels wrong and uncanny valley and just takes me out of the experience.

Is this actually being written by any writers from Japan? I thought the entire writing team was Western based?

It would be awesome to discover that hidden treasure chest marked on map. Enemy ai looks inferior to a regular zombie. Other than that, it looks cool. At least we have a horse alternative now.

I don't know when it started, but it has been more miss than hit. Definetly shines through how much effort is put into quips.. Some times it gets more annoying as time goes on, vague memories from FFX. Other times it jarring from the get go. FFXV comes to mind. Forspoken takes it to a new level. I think it show that they've put effort into the battle banter in FF7R.

Report me if I continue to console war
Im going to ignore the fps issues because this is still in development.
However the world looks pretty dull , hopefully other showings will show this game in a better light.

So what exactly about this game is "woke"?

Looks like a low budget JRPG that Square would release during the 360/PS3 era

The world looks so dull, so bland.

Hearing "OH AH OH AH" everytime the player sprints will get old fast

Gameplay looks ok, but dat cinematic framerate. Havent seen a current gen game yet with such frame drops.

UI is horrible. Protagonist doesnt seem to have much charisma.

I expect a not so great game

She is not gonna talk all the time in the final game.

Hear what they say, the bracelet talks about the zombies and it's clearly the first time that she fights against them, it's probably the first time that she can go out in the open world to kill stuff and these zombies looks like the most basic enemies in the game, she is gonna be talkative to establish his character (a shitty character most probably but that's another question entirely), they are going for the cringe out loud way when she fight but she is not gonna scream fuck off every damn time.

they never talk that much in the final game (ok except for deacon when he kill mofos)

I've to be honest, I think this gameplay looks really average, to not say bad. From trailers I thought it looked really promising, but maybe this showcase is just an unfortunate one.

Bad framerate. Combining spells could be fun. I don't like the traversal and I don't like that you can just out maneuver anything on the map. What's even the point to enemies in that case? Another big open empty world full of no danger.

Still, I feel this type of "commentator protagonist" had its roots in Uncharted, though it also got a boost from Horizon.
Personally they should have followed Halo idea that comments should be left to NPCs, rather than protagonist. Even isekai protagonists don't comment that much (unless it is cooking lol)

All in all, for now it looks like a tech demo for spell casting or something. Graphics are good though, particle effects also nice.
But the world is empty, I have no doubt that we won't have much in the world to do either (some hidden quests or dungeon). It is funny but it needs some Ubisoft touch:messenger_tears_of_joy:

I personally hate what Ubisoft did with open-world genre, but here it would make it into a better game. Let's see the final result. But knowing that FF15 open world was not that great either, I don't have high expectations. Cutscenes are also nowhere near FF level.

If I buy this, I will play it on mute...she speaks in 4 minutes constantly, imagine hearing her for one or two hours.
If this is the biggest biome it's fucking boring...it looks empty and dull/monotonous. The combat, well did not look anything special and to kill 20 fodder creatures she used 300 spells... How long is a boss fight, 3 days??
But will reserve my judgement for the final product.

I don't like how weightless the MC appears. Even when she's making these huge jumps, she lands with no real impact. It looks odd and doesn't look fun to play.

It also doesn't help that the concept of the story is that she comes from the real world. So on top of constantly speaking she does so in a way that doesn't really fit the medieval fantasy setting.

Imagine Aragorn in LOTR being like "yo Frodo!, that ring you've got there is fucking awesome. Let's go beat the shit out of Sauron!"

The game's biggest crime is how boring it looks. I've given up on these open world action games post Middle-Earth: Shadow of Modor.

Guardians of the Galaxy / Farscape basically. It can work if it's got fun characters.

True, though IMO the style fits sci fi (or rather space fantasy) better.
And Guardians of the Galaxy for example sets the wacky tone from the start. Here, at least from what they have shown, it doesn't mix too well. Looks and sounds like someone modded an Uncharted character into a Square game.
