How Xbox Was Finally Proven Right in 2021

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
With the ability to stream games, I don't even need a Series X. Yeah, it's really quite awesome. *Happily looks at his beautiful One S*

I may be wrong here (Someone please correct me if i am), but the only caveat is that on One S, you will get the Series S versions of games via XCloud, not the SX versions.

Still, a great way to play current-gen exclusives on your old 2013 consoles.

Oh is that so? I've only tried the Halo Infinite beta over the cloud, as I'm still playing through my backlog. Still good enough, man. Instead of installing 100GB games, I just press the stream button, and seconds later I'm playing. Doesn't get much better than this.

ANDS

King of Gaslighting
Being behind the eight ball gives you more space to experiment and get aggressive in ways that other companies (read: SONY) are unwilling to do (and SONY has gotten stagnant beyond the quality of its gaming output which - sorry - is still the most consistent in the industry).

However this whole "XBOX was right all along bit. . ." No. They were (and still are in my opinion) wrong about cloud based gaming being the future and in the best interest of gamers which a lot of there movements seem to be drifting towards: locking you into the MS ecosystem, "by hook or by STEAM. . ."

They'll be proven right when Starfield,Unavowed,Perfect Dark and Project Mara are released. The Series S is selling well but we'd have to wait to see how future proof it really is. Amateurish article honestly.

This doesn't reflect any corporate philosophy beyond "Money buys things."

That's exactly what I plan to do.

By the time I get a PS5 in 2023~ most of the earlier exclusives will be $9.99 or so.

SX and Game Pass is keeping me occupied extremely well until then. I calculated this for another topic and turns out I've played approx 83~ games via Game Pass this year (not all to completion obviously but still ...)

That's the way I always do it, Xbox first and then PS at mid point. Though I picked up both my X1 and PS4 closer to mid point last-gen (went with a GTX 960 to start with, LOL).

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Been on and off the Xbox Series X, Gears and Halo those two games are the big shooters, exclusives that makes a difference. Got to remember Microsoft is coming off the Xbox One and it's miss TV, kinect bungle approach. They brought back a focus on VIDEO GAMES (Gamepass) and have come back to OG Xbox era of feels.

You don't even need a Microsoft produced console or device to play over their cloud.

I fail to understand your locking/hook comment. I mean, at some point, you have to decide what company to give your money if you want to buy a game. You will inherently build a library of digital goods that is locked to *something*.

I hear this a lot in PS5 game threads. What exactly do Halo Infinite & FH5 do that makes it "next-gen"
both xbox and sony have yet to release a game that shows the capabilities of curent gen machines
if the best thing about curent gen is jumping from one portal to another without load times then it would be very disappointing
with the beast cpu i expect more world interactivity , impressive AI , realistic crowd behaviour , better level design

The one thing Microsoft is doing really well with Xbox is creating a connected platform for unique experiences, fully utilizing the power of Microsoft Azure cloud computing, while also preserving the legacy of videogames as a form of art, and democratising gaming with the Xbox GamePass program and the Xbox Series S console. Personally I look forward to the over 50 exciting exclusive games currently being developed at Xbox Game Studios around the world.

This has to be you quoting Spencer, lol.

I agree, they are doing that right and many other things. I believe Spencer is working his ass off to make Xbox's ecosystem a good place to game.

I love what MS is doing for three simple reasons.

1. They made gaming cheaper. Because of Gamepass. Haven’t bought a single game for Xbox this year but it’s still my main platform. Half a pizza per month and I can play everything on GP plus all their 23 studios is releasing day 1 until 2024.

2. I get PC versions for free. Could try Flight Simulator in VR without an extra purchase. Could play Forza Horizon on a triple screen rig without paying extra.

3. I have the same save file on PC and console. No more starting over just because I move my ass from the couch to the computer room.

to be honest no i havent , i plan to but i just bought a couple of games and im out of money
what does it do that makes it next gen ?
- Dualsense usage on a level never done before.
- Fantastic usage of 3D audio.
- High quality environments that can interact with your movements in unique ways.
- Hardware Accelerated lighting.
- Simply just high overall production value.

The warring from Sony players is so transparent it’s hilarious. How can you possibly complain that halo and forza aren’t next gen games because they run on an Xbox one but then claim Horizon 2 is next gen?

Why do people complain about the Series S being less powerful and “holding back games” but then claim “oh nbd about horizon. Just turn the settings down”.

Remember when Microsoft was shit on for dabbling in TV and movies years ago? Now it’s “so cool!”

Remember when Xbox games on PC made it “useless to buy an Xbox”? Just how many PS exclusives have already/been announced to come to PC only a year later?

Remember when “great exclusive games is all that matters! Xbox has a drought! Nothing to play.” *no mention of an entirely dead past 7 months from Sony”.

This one is my favorite: “no more loading times!!! You don’t even have to sit through boot up screens!” *totally shits on quick resume and pretends it doesn’t work* Remember when this entire site was suggesting that “switcher” on PS5 was the same as quick resume? They were so excited. When it was discovered to simply be a menu, all the sudden they never wanted quick resume.

There are so many more examples that it’s hilarious.

If you’re going to war, at least be consistent.

"Microsoft is investing a lot of money into the idea that next-gen software and next-gen power don’t have to be so closely associated with a piece of hardware."

strange statement , dont understand it
Next-Gen Cloud gaming on Cell Phones, Tablets and lesser PCs, older consoles and laptops. Xbox on both Console and PC. Series X and series S and any other series down the line. The best , Free Backwards Compatibility the gaming community has to date.

Microsoft's new strategy has always been the correct one, because it's the one that most fits best with a goal to not merely copy or emulate what Sony does, but to simply change the industry in ways that works to Microsoft's and Xbox's benefit. And in so doing they find success not by "beating" Sony at its own game, but simply by convincing enough gamers to see and enjoy gaming the way they do. That's it. The Zenimax Media acquisition which got them Bethesda was, I feel, the final major piece of the puzzle, even if it won't be the last piece. I can hardly perceive a move in gaming going forward for Microsoft that can be considered a "bigger" deal than buying Zenimax Media/Bethesda.

make a game that’s to graphic intensive to run on the system forcing them to release pro version of the console or play then at 20fps on current hardware.

For me the 60fps+ and SSD speeds make current games feel as next gen as I need. 120fps destiny on console.. man what a treat.

Microsoft is doing what I think most of its competitors feared they would ever since they jumped in the console market. They are all in now. It’s no longer a niche product in their lineup as it was before. They view Xbox as one of their primary offerings and drivers for growth in the consumer segment.

We are in for some explosive competition in the gaming market over the next couple of years.

End of the day. Consumers end up winning.

High production value is next gen? I thought high production value was always a pinnacle of Sony?

3D audio? come on now. It is no different than Dolby and you know that.

High quality environments you can interact with? This is limited to next gen? What?

Once again, a total BS editorial piece backed up by zero real data or facts. But at least he states he thinks Xbox is going to remain a distant third to cover his rear.

Software, software, software. That’s what it always comes down to. Xbox needs to pump out more and better software. Halo and Forza games (especially ones that are clearly built for last gen) are not going to move the needle. Remember how the criticism of the Xbox was that it was a Halo/Forza/Gears box? So this year we get … Halo and Forza? XCloud is also not going to move the needle. No one wants lag or compressed video streams. Network latency and bandwidth issues are going to be a fact of life rendering this solution an also ran. It just feels like MS still is not quite getting it, but we will see what they announce soon.

Make new, fresh, exciting, fun games. No one buys a system because of “the power of Azure.” Or how many studios MS bought. Or because of the slogan that “YOU are at the center of gaming.” People will always buy hardware because they want the software. The hardware is just a means of accessing that software. If that wasn’t the case the switch wouldn’t be dominating right now.

MS still doesn’t seem to know how to cultivate a game studio. Look at the difference with Dread. MercurySteam explained how working with Nintendo was so tough because of the high standards they maintained and also how much they learned. Contrast that with 343i that has spent decades spinning their wheels and turning out mediocre products. Or any studio that Sony has bought, turning out hit after hit in a fairly timely manner. MS has no equivalent of this. Just buying up a bunch of independent studios and hoping for them to now carry you isn’t quite the same thing.

Anyway, another silly internet piece backed up by nothing. What kind of person thinks “MS might be losing in every category but at least they are ‘right’”? It’s completely asinine.

After some of the revelations in the recent DF thread I have to question everything like this that we now see.

Sony isn’t making a comeback though, those games releasing next year are sequels to highly successful games on a highly successful console.
LMFAOOOO!

“Sony isn’t making a comeback though. They don’t need to follow the insane rules of “what a next gen game is”.

This is what I mean when I say the warring is transparent.

What? Halo infinite isn’t a sequel to a HIGHLY successful franchise? Forza 5 isn’t a sequel to a HIGHLY successful franchise? Just stop lmao.

Ah yes, Xbox is a "distant third" while actually being in second place 🤭 Such losers.

Not gonna say 'fuck the S' but I would have loved a digital XSX.

Im not a fan at all of it. But I get what they're aiming for with it. Digital XSX would have been much more ideal imo.

At the end of the day its mostly the hardcore who won't support the console aka the vocal minority here.

This is going to be the DriveClub of this generation. Long after everyone has moved on (around June this year) there will still be people trying to tell you how unique a TPS bullet hell was. ShootClub would have been a more appropriate name.

Also I found Returnal actually had the most annoying DualSense implementation between the brrzwut sound of the alt fire being recharged, the vibration on every dash and the adaptive left trigger.
