Chip shortages will never end.

There is too much money involved in the chip business. Companies are racing to improve capacity (new fabs etc) in order to meet demand. We are just stuck in that ramp up period. Once capacity improves, manufacturers will be able to slowly improve supply to meet demand and things will normalise. Just might take another year or two.

BestBuy is part of the big conspiracy. Not a thing in that store works without first signing up with a service.
Want a smart thermostat? sign up with a company that first takes your wish then sends it to the thermostat on the wall in your own house.
Want a Camera on your porch to see outside? You must first sign up for a service that takes your video THEN sends it to your phone.
Want a new audio receiver? We don’t stock that because it doesn’t have a service you need to sign up for.

actually its splitting a few of the bigger companies out of the line up who are building factories ot make thier own semi conductors like Ford. So at some point there will be much less demand on the current manufactures.

People will buy whatever they can on credit, this is really what you are seeing with prices these days, you can push items to absurd levels, people will complain but then they will buy it on credit and pretend they could afford it.

How can you think it's acceptable to buy a PS5 for 1k from scalpers? some of you in here probably did. Don't get played.

Hopefully things will work themselves out, in the console space anyway, as many devices move to 5nm. In general, I think once buyers have shown a willingness to pay x $$$ for something there isn't much reason for companies to ever lower prices. Instead different producers will just collude together to earn more.

Isn't a new chip factory in US planned for 2023? It would sure help a bit. That being said, chip factories are really expensive but having only 2 or 3 seems a bit not future proof. How long a chip factory can run before being obsolete? 10 years?

Because hes right, everything is forever changed and fucked permanantley. There will never be a normal ever again. scalpers won, covid won, we are forever fucked. The world is fucked. Some days i wonder if its even fucking worth it, this shit fucking world we live in now. Crypto won, nft’s won, corprations and rich fucks got their unregulated market. Fuck everything, fuck this shit fucking world
Wow nah man I don’t see it that way at all. If I’m looking into the crystal ball I can see Covid evolving into a regular cold if you take the vaccine, in the summer the restrictions will have lifted, new electronics factories will help sort out the console and graphics cards supply issues, probably not in 2022 but I can see online accounts as a short term fix so not just scalpers manage to buy consoles. A big retailer in Sweden had a bunch of XSX recently, online login sales at launch price, friends has now jumped in. Things are looking positive.

Crypto winning though, it don’t affect me much right now but I can definitely see longterm effects there, if people grow up knowing they can get rich doing nothing and avoid paying taxes it’ll change everything. I try to not think about it.

Some of yall have never Bullwhip Effect'ed and it really shows

You can't just shit out a fabrication plant in a year but new ones are being built to deal with this, it may continue through this year but it will definitely end and may end in a glut (see what happened to used GPU prices last time bitcoin crashed).

The market knows this - notice how silicon fabrication companies like TSMC did see a rise, but then corrected down? The market expects that some time maybe next year there will be more production than demand again.

Maybe everyone was a bit too used to instant gratification anyways. We'll look back on these three years and be like that was quite a reality check.

so you think that chip shortages is a conspiracy of videogame platform companies to force cloud/streaming.

In two years all these new fabs will be completed and they will be paving roads with video cards because there is so much supply they don't know what to do with it. AMD and Nvidia will report horrible earnings because they have to sell chips so cheap to get rid of them. Then they will dial back production and supply with shrink, and then.........

This is how it always works. With everything.

Yeah I could see this happening, especially since the high demand for home electronics mostly comes from more people sitting at home wanting new toys. Once Covid has evolved into a regular cold and everyone is back at the office the demand for home electronics will go down, then electronic cars is what will keep many factories with work.

chip shortage, which would be regardless of Covid?
Disagree. If the fabs and their supply line companies hadn't shut down because of Covid, we wouldn't be in this mess.

there is no worldwide "new world order" political motive happening

I have my ps5 and my gaming pc soo

not really. The longer it takes for people to obtain a ps5, the longer it takes for companies to move on from making games for last gen consoles. If Jim Ryan still mandates games for ps4 in 2023, I doubt you would say "I'm good."

Far bigger impact had for example that boat which got stuck in the canal. Chip factories after all are heavily automated.

Another thing is no one is cracking down on the scalping rings. There has been at least three cases near me where employees at target and Walmart were part of scalping rings and would take almost all of the stock for themselves. I’m sure that’s not just happening in my area and not just with consoles.

It's being adopted at least as fast as the PS4

https://www.cnet.com/news/the-ps5-is-still-selling-better-than-the-ps4-despite-shortages/

There's just

1) A lot of demand because people are inside, plus the PS4 was a highly successful generation with a lot of momentum carrying forward to the next
2) The global chip shortages mean they can't quickly spin up more

A lot of people have been waiting for a while to get one, but this still overall hasn't meant a slower adoption than a previous very successful cycle, just lots of demand

The 7th gen got a lot of games for a long time after the next gen released, this wasn't new

That's not a result of Covid though. Things like Netflix and Uber were big way before then. Their rise is a direct result of capitalism, not the pandemic or a new world order.

Get a grip man, yes sure there is a lot to complain about in the world, but the world becomes a lot better each generation. You are not in a war with family getting killed, you are not starving (I hope). There is a lot to live for, just make sure you put it all in perspective.

I do truly hope, you start seeing things more positive and focus on those, and ignore the fuss.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
It will certainly end for good sooner or later. Someone will jump on this golden opportunity.
Nah. The company that makes the machines that make the chips is pumping them out as fast as they can. I know someone that works on these machines, they have PhD in physics; they say that the small section of the tech that they work on is the most complicated thing they've ever seen, and it's just a tiny fraction of the entire mechanism. It took thousands of engineers to design the machines that make modern chips. Even if someone wanted to jump into the market, it would take many, many millions (if not billions) of dollars to enter the space. The chip shortage is going to last for a while.

What's more, the companies that make the chips are expanding as fast as they possibly can, and it will likely be a decade before they can get new plants up and running, get enough trained employees to get up to speed, and then ramp up the new plants to the level that the current ones are running at.

Will the chip shortage end? Yes. Will it be soon? No.
