ELDEN RING | Reviews Mega Thread

Well done to FromSoft. If this really does deliver as positive an experience as the reviews suggest, then wow.

Though I must say the 97/100 feels weirdly artificial to me. I can't help but feel as though some of the scores are just the journos trying to keep their cred.

I am very excited to play!

So Xbox version is not great... I suppose PS5 version won't be that much improved since alpha/beta. Really From, you just needed to make switch for "always 60 FPS" and use last gen settings on new consoles to keep framerate locked...

I've read many times that this one has a great tutorial for beginners, and the open world nature of the game should make it less frustating thatn the previous titles.

Hope you like the game dude. BEst case scenario you'll have a ton of souls games to play after this one.
Issue is this game mat be the easiest of soul titles when I learned they have arrows that can put some bosses to sleep and because it's open world you can beat some bosses from long range...

I thought I was being pretty optimistic with a 91-92 guess just because it's typically hard to hit 90s, but wowsers. I'm hyped. Pre-order ready to goooo

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife

Schreiererer says PC version feels fine and this is with no day 1 patch.

I guess it must really depend on system specs. I'm not worried tho... a day 1 patch seems to be coming and worst case sceneario I guess my 5800X and 3070 should be enough to brute force those sweet 60fps.

This is true, but even without playing a game I can watch it and be like "oh man, I can't wait to get my hands on this." This would be the first time ever in history that a game that's supposed to be this good isn't connecting with me in anyway. It's literally bizarre to me.
It really is a question of weither or not you're already played and loved a Souls game before.
If not, then you cannot understand the absolute thrill of playing it just watching a video. If you played any souls game and it doesn't click, there's probably no reason you'll enjoy Elden Ring as it's the Souls formula turn to 11. But it's okay, no genre is for everyone. I don't like sport games, any FIFA video will fall flat for me and yet the license is top selling worldwide.

I bet it will be resolved quickly. The game isn't even out yet. FROM has released performance patches quickly after all previous releases as well.

I’m very excited for it. That said, I’m going to put it off until later in the year. I beat Dark Souls 3 recently and I do get fatigue of FromSoft’s gameplay styles if I play them too often. I want to space it out so I can fully appreciate it.

I bet this will get multiple sequels.
Elden Ring is the Dark Souls franchise of this generation just how Dark Souls was the franchise during the PS3/PS4 Era. I would be very surprised if this won't get up to at least 2 more games over the 6 years or so.

It doesn't feel like a one-off such as Bloodborne or Sekiro. Those games were made with specific mechanics and different themes. Meanwhile Elden Ring is really just Dark Souls 4 in disguise with a new universe and evolution of the original systems and a slew of new mechanics.

Demons Souls was an experiment
Dark Souls was the core essence that spawned sequels
Bloodborne was a new twist and setting but a one-off
Sekiro was more of a tenchu game and less soulslike with very unique combat and was also a one-off

Elden Ring is clearly built on the Dark Souls 3 foundations and is the next true iteration.

What was the last highly anticipated AAA single player game to get this score though? There's like one every few years at best.

It's not the specific score I'm focused on.

It's that games media entire structure is to prop up FOMO games (games that make the bulk of their profits in the first week) from publishers that draw traffic.

Elden Ring may be a GotY quality game. I'm not going to find out until about 1 - 6 months after release when information from more balanced sources starts overtaking the conversation.

Right now, 130 Greg Millers are yelling "buy this game!" and the superfans are eating it up.

Again, Elden Ring may indeed be an amazing game.

No! It can't be. It's just open world dark souls. NOOOOO!

Been hanging here since 99 when it was called gaming-age. It's always been the same debates. Even Halo peoples were like "What's sO spEciAl?? TrIbES alSO hAs VeHicuLes??" .

Like yea buddy, like any art, the things we see now are the buildup of everything before it, going all the way back to Atari.

But the thing is that, if you have a bunch of basic ingredients you picked at the grocery from a list, what you make of it might not taste the same as what a world class chef can make, right?

Peoples who still associate open world = Ubisoft, might quickly go into my ignore list, i can't stand them anymore.

If I could beat Sekiro on Xbox One X at 30-40fps and Bloodborne on base PS4 at 20-30fps, I doubt I’ll have any trouble playing this with dropped frames in the 40s being the lowest. The games are so good it’s not even a problem for me.

Yes, but they never fixed frame pacing issues for example. They also left Sekiro and PS4Pro version of DS3 in broken state with unlocked/stuttery framerate until PS5 BC fixed this years later by brute force...

yeah, it seems like zero improvements have been made since the original beta test results.

which is extremely disappointing and also weird.

there is no logical reason for the Series X version to run the way it does.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Best playing but MS5 is easily a worse game than MS1, MS2, and MS3.

Imagine how good the game would be if it wasnt open world

If it wasn't an open world, wouldn't it just be the same as Dark Souls 3 ?

The open world is what seems to make this game unique.

I feel like I'm in the Matrix, and the only person that's actually unplugged, but this game quite literally looks nowhere as good as what these scores suggest. I've watched hours and hours of footage trying to see what the fuss is all about, and I'm just not seeing it.

From the moment this game was shown everything about it seemed heavily manufactured even though I found the art style and visual direction to be great.

But yea, I'm not buying in at all. I await to see if someone can show me what makes this game so special because usually I'm quite good at feeling out games, and so far those instincts have come back with nothing.
It's less of a scenario where "you see a truth that no one else sees" and more of a you just aren't into what it is. No one can "help you" with that. If you're not into it, you're not into. I hope you got the attention you wanted from this, lmao.

Right now, 130 Greg Millers are yelling "buy this game!" and the superfans are eating it up.

Again, Elden Ring may indeed be an amazing game.
That's why you don't pay attention to the "Greg Millers" and more so the smaller ones that you may appreciate more. If you do, the reception is very much the same. It's a huge game and release, this reaction from outlets and journalists is standard.

May be? I'm sure it WILL be.

wow, didn't expect that. Like I expected it to get rave reviews, but not like this. Glad that from software finally gets the acclaim they deserve. Just make a King's Field or Shadow Tower again please. I don't want them to end up a one trick pony.

yes but jason said he had togo back to pc cause ps5 did not look as good. just wait and see, stop believing tweeterians

well as long as PS5 and Xbox look competent I will make My incredible Hulk green Rat build on xbox and my Blue magic build for the PS5.....

...PC gets Dex samurai warrior!

Don't have time to read these. Are they saying it's difficult enough? I want a challenge. Thinking about not increasing my vitality
I never increased health. Only core Stat and a bit of stamina and I downed 26+ bosses without getting hit. Some of those bosses took over 3 hours of practice lol. Game has new combat mechanics that make some stuff easier.

PC version always gets lower score
FS are not great PC developers. They are mediocre at best. They do eventually get fixed, but it is what it is. Dark Souls release on PC was just insane. How that was acceptable is beyond general understanding, but then D Durante fixed it in 23 minutes after release. So who the hell knows?

Either way, I'm still playing on PC and am very much looking forward to it.

It looks so good, my wife is already filing for divorce because I'm going to be abandoning my family for the next month.

What's blowing me away is Sekiro totally looked warranting of all the hype this game is getting. Sekiro is the one that to me looked like "holy shit, I've got to play this one." Sekiro is the one that when I didn't immediately get to it, it was always on my mind as one of those games I MUST play.

What's so different feeling about THIS particular game? It seems like it combines all of the usual gameplay stuff people have liked from their games, but just given the player a bigger world to explore and to discover things, which I can see being very attractive for many, but where is the story hook? Where is the thing making me want to care about what this world has to offer? Nothing I've received from anything released thus far tells me there is much of a properly presented story here. I'm sure a story is in there, but they can't tell us shit about it? Why can't they do what they did with Sekiro? Show me why I'm supposed to care besides moving around in an open world, seeing pretty sights and fighting large enemies.

Sekiro looked worthy of all the hype. This game seems like a lazier game than Sekiro was. Just keeping it real.

Yeah, every single player game gets a 97 Metacritic. All of them.

Nope. Only a handful of games in the last 10 years recieved such high scores.

Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption 2, Disco Elysium, MGSV, The Last of Us 2.

Some people look at that list and say "Yeah, those are all amazing games."

Other people look at that list and go "Yeah, I'll wait until the dust settles on this one."

The dust is thick right now (for me at least).

Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro ran very well on PC..I played Sekiro on launch day on PC and I can't remember it ever getting a patch during my playthrough. still ran like a dream at 1440p60 max settings on a GTX1070 and a Ryzen 2600
