ELDEN RING | Reviews Mega Thread

This is going very very well. Imagine being Horizon... the luck they have is terrible. First one released right around Zelda BOTW now the 2nd one releases right around Elden Ring. Granted, Elden Ring doesn't have the mass appeal that a Zelda has, but still.

Both botw and horizon zero dawn sold over 20 million each. Its elden ring I'd be more concerned of. I hope it does 20+ million to.

People should not put so much weight into meta scores or they will miss great games

honestly I enjoyed many 80 metacritic games more than some 90 + ones

Horizon forbidden west to me is so much better than the first game in every thing specially side missions and activities … the pacing. Robots and towns are so much better - still not finished yet -
But still

For elden ring I trust Meyazaki all his games are great and I think he can achieve 97 meta but I have to play first to judge

Those are the same class of weapon: Greatswords. You’re grasping at straws. Do you expect them to make different move sets for all weapons? Those weapons and a regular long sword don’t feel the same at all.
Keep reaching.
The Black Knight Sword is a Greatsword, while the Black Knight Greatsword is an Ultra Greatsword. There is an Ultra Greatsword called the Greatsword in these games, and some Ultras just have Greatsword in their names. Yes, this is weird.

Clearly triggered because you are one of those two groups I mentioned. Maybe learn from why you are so easily offended by what I said, kiddo.

Bless your heart.

. . . still wasting breath in a review thread despite not relying on reviews (written by people who do those interviews and previews you're committed to for "research").

One thing I dislike.

I saw this a lot with previous From Software titles and Japanese RPGs, that when sites review then, they put the resident "specialist" on them.

The people who reviewed games like Persona 5 or Dragon Quest were all the resident waifu/anime-obsessed fanboys who loved long-drawn-out JRPGs. With FromSoftware, is always the big Bloodborne/Dark Souls fans who review these games.
I think you make a fine observation here but “fresh takes” on soulsborne games are imo more of a niche/fringe thing anyway. You can find them in any thread about any of the games. There’s nothing special about them.

I just think that it's hard to be a video game fan without also being a fan of From games, because they're good.
Agreed but they do exist they are a minority and ideally some of them should review From games.
Also, From fans would be the first to point out flaws.
True but I believe on average they will be more favourable.
And no one wants to read reviews from non-fans,
I do! If you don't that's cool however at some point you weren't a fan until you played the game and then you were so it's nice to have new comer perspective or someone that didn't like there games in past. This could be positive for the game if people who didn't like the previous games enjoyed this game.
and no non-fans would want to review it because they're...not fans.
True but if its your job then tough we all have to do things we don't like sometimes and you would be providing a valuable review.

Just realised it's 11pm GMT tomorrow, not midnight. Sweet. Get a few hours in, sleep, get up, breakfast, coffee, get back to it. Very excited.

Naw, HFW feels in many ways regression from the first game. They really didn't change much at all from the first game so if that didn't get GOTY there's no way in hell this one was going to.

Whereas the first Horizon game kept me engaged throughout, not feeling that way with the second one, too many weapons/upgrades for a game that quite frankly feels like they get in the way more than accommodate the gameplay.

I spoke to some friends and asked if they preordered this "hell no, i don't preorder shit anymore it's stupid" ... basically the general consensus. I did and don't regret it one bit. I just wish it had better preorder bonus... a gesture right? Pffft.

FYI Walmart + is having a ps5 drop tomorrow (2/24) at 12 EST if your in the US.

You do have to have the full Walmart plus and not the free trial to buy it.

More info

Got mine last month the same way. Just don't trust delivery time.

Sadly I'm not in the US.
Must already deal with the ridiculous official price from Sony of almost $700, but I'm not willing to go over that which is already ridiculous (considering Microsoft can sell the SX for $550)

You know how many video games there are in the world, right?

You must understand that eventually a handful of games are going to hit so hard that the vast majority of critics agree that they're 10/10 games. For the record there are 45 total 95+ games on MC , 45, total. Ever. Now take a look at how many games came out in 2021 in total, a year devastated by delays.

You can't even make a top 50 games of all time with 95+ MC. That's not selective bias, that's just what's going to eventually happen when people review hundreds of games per year. It's totally natural that a very select few form an upper bracket. It would be incredibly weird if no game ever hit a 95 or whatever other arbitrary number.
Well if you look at the user review scores there are only 12 and interestingly I only heard of endwalker.

However I articulated myself poorly so I will try to explain myself better.

The average is not really important obviously some games are gonna come out on top its the lack of diversity with scores that is the bigger problem.

First out of any of those 45 games are there any you hated, thought was average, couldn't finish etc?

Because I know I have felt those things and they would have been very poorly represented.

I know for a fact that a huge chunk of those games won't have a single individual review below a 7 and that's bullshit.

So I guess on reflection it's not the average that matter but the 7 to 10 ratings system most reviewers stick to that bothers me.

I dunno, I definitely felt hard pressed to enjoy HZD after BotW, but I think that is less to do with them both being open world games and more than BotW just ticked all the right boxes for me. Its like seeing an amazing film and then follow that up with a good movie, but you can feel that it just doesn’t hit that same spot for you.

People keep responding to my comment like I'm hating on Horizon because their jimmies got rustled. I bought Horizon on launch, played it a few hours and jumped right back to BotW. Tried a few times again over the years but never could get into it.

Bought it again on PC thinking maybe it was the framerate. Nope, still bored. It's beautiful to look at, but the world felt sterile and flat compared to BotW.

Didn't even bother with Forbidden West because I knew Elden Ring would probably do the same thing. Seems I'm right.

Thinking of going Samurai and Dex build for the first playthrought, one of the reviewers mentioned how it's almost impossible to not be interrupted while casting in late game due to casting time not being affected by poise stat.

Imagine needing reviews to convince you to pre-order/buy Elden Ring. Have you not been paying attention to what FROM has been doing for the past decade? 🔥🔥🔥👑

I've had this game pre-ordered since it was available. As have most people. Those who haven't were likely waiting for more meatier non-NDA'd impressions to get a fuller picture on what the game was going to offer. We're not all drooling retards that are waiting in the rain with our lunch money hoping a kind person will come along and tell us it's ok to get the game.

. . . Jesus, most people in this thread are just excited to play the game and glad the game is getting the attention and praise they assumed it would.

so it's a wrong thing that the person that reviews a game knows about other games of the genre, really?

The 1-10 scale in game reviews is broken, I get that, but when you already know that and factor it in to scores, it doesn't make a difference. If all reviewers magically agreed to properly use the 1-10 scale rather than "7 is average", then your problem would be that too many games scored above a 90 rather than a 95, or something similar. It would just scale.

Again, most of the top games not having any low scores is not bullshit, it's just maths. The reviews are only done by a few dozen people, not the millions that actually play the games. Eventually, you are always going to get a very select few games that 100% of a few dozen people thought were at least an 8 or whatever. The odds aren't even that crazy, it's almost impossible to avoid and it would be incredibly strange if that never ever happened.

User reviews may be able to give you a "better" result by providing thousands of ratings, but the problem then is that most of those "reviews" are either 0 or 10 depending on the user's preferences. People put stock in critic review aggregates because the user reviews include... these people.

When that's the alternative, critic scores start to look like a better guideline, even if you don't always agree with them.

It's a problem if 99% of reviews are like that yes. This will for alot of people be there first FromSoftware game so some reviewes should cater to them.

Literally none of the people I have seen interviews from or have done the previews from are on this list. Nice try though.
