Bloomberg: Sony to reveal Spartacus next week

I’m hoping we get true backwards compatibility for PS1 to PS3 games, but it’s like a sliver of hope, it ain’t gonna happen.

I do not doubt that it will be a success and that, when it arrives, some of those here who criticized the services and models of subscription / Gamepass and said that PS users do not need them and who prefer to buy games, will begin to formulate reasons why Spartacus is better than Gamepass. Simply because it's what they had to do then.

These types of models are here to stay and it has been shown that people are very receptive to them. I have no doubt that an interesting competition between Spartacus and Gamepass ( even if they are not exactly the same) will start and in that same one the users will win.

Should be available on mobile like gamepass is if they want to compete.
They are working on it. They said it back when they announced PS Now back in 2014 as part of their long term plans, said it a handful times in the last two or three years and in the last year or so they filled multiple related patents.

Oh so this is gonna be an extension of PS NOW? Was not aware of that. I thought it was gonna be something brand new.

I guess my hope is that they come out with something similar to what Xbox has. Most of the games available on Xbox Game Pass are also available on PC Gamepass. I'm not really expecting day and date releases, but more PC ports would be awesome.
Yes, it's going to be basically PS Plus and PS Now merged into a single multi tiered service:
-Tier A: the current PS Plus
-Tier B: the current PS Plus + many downloadable games, I'd bet the downloadable ones for PS4/5 from PS Now
-Tier C: the current PS Plus + the current PS Now + time limited full game trials of newer games

They are supposed to throw there many newer games to PS Now but not day one games, including extra old platforms like PS1 an PSP, and in a near future PS5 games too.

PS Now is supposed to stop existing outside this service, so I think they'll use their PS Now PC client for the streaming of this tier C. They plan to extend their cloud gaming clients to mobile, smart tvs, smartphones or tablets.

Nothing has been said of them including native PC games on this service. I highly doubt they would do it because they don't have a PC store or PC launcher. They only have a few games ported to PC.

Give me a, every Sony movie and TV show catalog tier and I’m in

Won't happen because Sony has decided against having their own TV/Movie streaming service and is instead licensing their stuff to Disney. Starting this year Sony's movies and TV shows will stream on Disney+ and Hulu.

That’s a shame, they could easily compete in the big leagues if they tried.

I’m not expecting true backwards compatibility at all if that means inserting a disc that you own. Best case scenario, you can buy backwards compatible games digitally or download them with the subscription, worst case scenario, it is literally just streaming games via PS now. I HATE streaming games.

So...we'll be able to play PS5 on PC?

That'd be funny, as in the greatest degenerate leap towards a wall, but that's what Sony has been doing with their brand and platform.

Currently I'm not even subscribed to Plus 👀 👀
Now that I've finished Horizon and co-op might be useful in Elden Ring I was considering to subscribe again so this happens at the perfect moment for me.

In general I don't care about streaming, I barely have time to play new games so paying to play 20 years old classics is not appealing either unless they're considerably improved.

What I'd like to see is basically a PS Plus with high quality free monthly games (like they were back in the PS3 days when the service was all about the games), a few day one releases for big indies and free trials of new games for a few hours.

Yeah I would be fine with being able to buy them digitally. I wouldn’t be at all interested if it was just streaming as well.

In the same way Sony adds from time to time old PS4 games to their cloud gaming library, some time after the Spartacus release they'll keep adding some old PS5 games. Meaning that via this service they will be playable via cloud gaming on PC too, independetly if they got a native late PC port or not.

When they announced their PS Now long term plans back in 2014 they mentioned that would also wanted to end bringing it to smartphones and tablets. In the last year or so we saw related Sony patents, and they also mentioned to their investors that are working to bring it to mobile. One of the current Sony corporate goals is to push their subscription services and part of it was to bring them to more platforms. So very likely this fiscal year they will release a PS Now (or whatever new name it gets after included in Spartacus) client for mobile.

If what Bloomberg said is real and they are adding PS1 and PSP games to the most expensive tier only, I think that what they are doing is to add them for cloud gaming only.

PS3 featured PS1 and PSP games, so probably they simply are adding them as part of their PS3 catalog inside PS Now. That would made them playable on PS4, PS5, PC and soon mobile without needing to make an emulator.

If they add more PS2 games they'll continue being downloadable or purchasable separatedly as PS4/PS5 digital games. But I don't think they'll add digital PS1/PSP/PS3 games for PS4 or PS5 because I assume they'll see little or no business there.

And even less allowing to play using your own PS1/PS2/PS3 discs games there. Specially with PS3 games, since most wouldn't be able to be run at full speed and without bugs on a PS3. This also would mean to test thousands of games, a huge task that would require a lot of money and that if they don't think it would generate enough extra revenue to make it profitable I think they won't see the point of implementing it unless they see a huge demand of people asking for it, which I think right now doesn't exist outside a few people in the forums who already have the consoles, or that won't buy it even if they implement it.

That'd be funny, as in the greatest degenerate leap towards a wall, but that's what Sony has been doing with their brand and platform.
In the recent years they are making more revenue and profit than ever, their exclusives are selling more and earning more awards than ever. They also have more active players and their game subscriptions have more subscribers than ever. They never have been that successful. And well, they have many other records, also including sold consoles (now constrained due to lack of chips).

In fact, many of these records aren't only for them but also for any console platform holder in gaming history. So what they have been doing with their brand and platform I'd call it smart instead of degenerate.

PSNow has been available since 2014. Even had some crazy deep discount pricing I still never subbed to.
As a person who never got the chance to play ps1-3 games, Ps now is great tool. Only downside was the quality of the stream.
If they are doing native as people say, then its gonna be great for me.

If the highest tier only includes demos and game streaming then it's a huge L.
That’s the expectation honestly. It is better that way. Also knowing Sony and introducing new things, expect this to release very poorly and improve later.

Then what was that report about the emulator being approved for the ps5?
They clearly have an emulator, but that may be for the server blades only. Meaning, they will have to eventually replace those PS3 CELL blades when they wear out, with PS5 ones in the future running an emulator.

Does not necessarily mean they will have the emulator hit the consoles themselves.

I wished they will hit the console. Those are awesome titles sitting down as streaming only.

This has mediocre written all over it. Shit won’t be even close to gamepass so why are they even compring the two? People really think that Sony will give away their latest games for a buck lmao.

Anyways i’m not subbed to PS+ anymore and i don’t think this new mediocre service will change my mind.

PS Now has existed since before GP and this service won’t have day one Sony exclusives. There’s no one chasing GP.
That was my point. Sony used to lead and not follow. If you are saying Sony is not doing this to answer Game Pass you are being willfully ignorant to the situation.

That being said, I'm happy. Unless they start reducing the games they release on PS+ it looks like I can continue on with my regular PS+ Sub and ignore all of this.

I’ll wait and see. Something like this would get a big announcement I’d think.

it would be nice if we got some more hints on content. I’m not expecting much.

They have to prove me wrong next week, but so far these are my thoughts as well.

As long as they don't take away the ability to keep ps+ games while you're subscribed, I don't care much for whatever else they add. If it's good I'll upgrade, if not I'll stay on the lower tier.

I haven't owned a playstation since the 3rd one but if this allows me to stream PS games to my PC I'm down for this.
Your post just shows how badly marketed PSNow was.

Lots of people don't know PSNow is a thing on PC...and even people who think PSNow doesn't allow you to download games on PlayStation consoles. That it's stream only.
They dropped the ball here for sure.

If this is the only method Sony will give us backwards compatibility they can fuck themselves. You can have a subscription service and not force your loyal customers to rebuy your games for the 15th time.

This will most definitely happen. Lower tear will only have online play and cloud saves. Previous PS+ games will be part of the higher tear.
