The interesting thing is, despite the success of the Souls franchise, From are always left to fund their games through either Bandai or Sony.
Kadokawa has never really supported them.
That's kind of wild. I looked up Kadokawa's finances though, apparently they're worth about $269 billion yen. That's about $2.4 billion in USD. So maybe it's just down to them not wanting to give too much in funding for what was traditionally a niche franchise?
With Elden Ring's success now, though, I imagine Kadokawa might be willing to provide more direct funding themselves, but I don't know if they have a games distribution/publishing label. That could be another reason.
Fun fact, they did used to make and publish their own games WAY back. Like Lodoss-Tou Senki (Record of Lodoss War) on the SFC...which is a pretty fun RPG with a neat battle system, for anyone interested
Perhaps it'd be easier for Sony to just give Miyazaki a few million dollars as a signing bonus and set up a new PlayStation studio under him in Japan, then poach most of the talent from FromSoftware to work on a Souls-like game.
FromSoftware doesn't own many IPs anyway, so nothing lost there. Then when their first game is announced, just slap "From the creators of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring" and people will buy it like crazy.
I wonder why Sony (or someone else) doesn't do that? Any thoughts?
One reason, Kadokawa and FromSoft would probably not let him walk so easily i.e they'd give him some phat extra pay to stay with them.
Another reason, Miyazaki might not want to leave his Souls team behind, and prefer to work with them.
Third reason (and possibly most important), Sony doing so could poison their relationship with FromSoft and Kadokawa in some form, since they'd be poaching key talent from a company they not only have worked with multiple times, but even have a minority stake investment in. And Sony don't want to risk jeopardizing an otherwise great business relationship over a talent poach.
If Sony does anything with Miyazaki that's exclusive for PlayStation console & ecosystem, it'll have to involve FromSoft, involve Kadokawa, and at the very least be a co-development deal like w/ Bloodborne. Maybe by leveraging that strategic partnership they announced months ago.
