[PC Gamer] Biggest disappointments of not-E3: Starfield is just ugly No Man's Sky

Heisenberg007

Gold Journalism
Reality check:
- Fallout 4 launched at 88 MC (84 on PS4);
- It shipped 12M copies in 24 hours and beat the concurrent players record of GTA5 with 470k concurrents;
- It sits on Steam at 88% positive recent reviews and 81% lifetime.

A big open world game is always going to have bugs, deal with it or play linear games.

76 is the only game with poor reception and as of now it’s actually quite good (on PC).
12 million copies to retailers, not consumers. lol. And that includes all pre-ordered copies.

For reference, Skyrim sold 7 million copies to retailers in the first 24 hours, and only 50% of that (3.5 million) to consumers.

According to Statista, Fallout 4 sold a total of 13.5 million copies LTD March 2020.

The saving grace is that the game is still a year away.

But they're targeting 30fps and looks like they're hitting about 15fps, especially the smoke.
Can't fly in or out of planets. Only 4 cities. AI looked terrible.
Enemies have no hit animations until their death animation. No damage indicator for you when taking damage.
If you shoot while moving the bullets come from over your head not out of your gun.
The shotgun shells still have the bullets in them when you eject the shells.
The room where you talk to that woman is daytime outside the windows but nighttime over head.
Using the laser in the darker part of the cave gives off zero light on the rock. etc.

I'm sure a lot of stuff will get ironed out, but it's definitely looking like a Bethesda game, not a current gen showcase like people are hyping it up.

Yep, this is the biggest plus the game has atm.

Lots of work to be done, and fingers crossed they smash the launch day, there is a pun in there somewhere :messenger_grinning:

The lie detector reveals that was a lie.

The reveal was l a bit lackluster and showed poor performance. Fps looked like it was dropping below 30.
I imagine it will be a outstanding game when it releases but graphically it is what you would expect with their engine and hopefully will release without major bugs.
I really hope now that Bethesda is under Microsoft's umbrella that they will not release a buggy game for once.

The art styles of the settlements they showed looked unique and cool but the rest did look bland (characters, gameplay, UI). I'm not expecting much.
Someone in the twitter comments called it "No Man's Skyrim" ... hahahaha, I"m dead. Looks cool tho, if I had an xbox I'd play it.
You don't want to play a Bethesda game on console unless you absolutely have no other choice.

Lets be real here, Xbox fanboys would shit on this game if Bathesda wasnt acquired by MS.

If you were talking about a company that has never released a successful RPG in their life, I could agree. But giving Bethesda success, you know this is the most pure bullshit.

Sure, there will ALWAYS be people who doesn't like certain franchises or even companies as a whole. But let's not pretend Bethesda didn't ever make extremely successful games.

Wrong!

What is this thread about? Read the title.

The comparisons aren't wrong. If you want to make a very similar game to one that had a ton of exposure the last 7 years you better blow people's socks off.

FO4 and 76 were extremely underwhelming. You have more money, more people, more expertise than hello games and yet this limp wrist presentation is what you put out?

Yeah it's a year away. Yeah we don't know the story and haven't seen much footage but it looks uninspired. And who trusts bethesdas story telling? Everyone sucks off obsidian for making the better fall out game for a good reason.

I love Toddposting as much as the next guy, but I don't really get the NMS comparisons. Starfield looks a lot more like Fallout 4 with space traversal & spaceship building. Another signature ugly Beth WRPG which people will play for the character builds, mods, and settlement/spaceship crafting, not so much the (presumably) generic story.

They did make extremely successful games but they've released two lackluster games in the last decade and some people have high expectations. Even more when they're now backed up by MS and they're making a XSX gen game only.
Why can't some of you accept that not everyone thinks that what they've shown is impressive or good and get pissed when comparisons are made - its fucking obvious that they took some inspiration from NMS even if they're different games overall.

This is a game that is supposed to make people go "WOW I need a fucking xbox or a new PC", it just wasn't that for everyone. If you check GAF, ERA and Reddit you'll see a lot of mixed reactions.
Why does it always have to come to fanboys, console wars and other shit. 🤷‍♂️

Don't own an Xbox. Call me crazy, but if Starfield ends up actually being somewhat similar to NMS, but with much better narrative and side quests, then I'm running to the store to get the system.(or will get back into PC gaming after a decade hiatus). Being Bethesda though, I may wait for a few patches to drop before jumping in.

I quite enjoy what NMS has become.

Is it a bit clickbaity? Sure

Is it wrong though? I think it's quite clear that the bubble this game had post 2018 announcement but pre-2022 showcase has burst.

With the lack of info on what this game was going to be, people filled in the blanks with their own wishful thinking, hyping it to impossible heights.

But it looks like it's just going to be a Bethesda game with a space skin, probably similar to their last one or two games.

AHH metric critic 88 means dick.

You'll be hard pressed to find gaf users who think it's great and the game isn't anywhere near as good as previous games in the series. Dialogue choices alone seem meaningless most of the time and you end up with the same result.

Lol Deal with it...

Okay , sure, Starfield may not be a visual tour de force but it still looks decent, so I think to say that it's a "ugly No Man's Sky" is pretty ridiculous since No Man's Sky is way uglier and has no really fun gameplay to speak of (you can still easily waste hours of your life playing it though, I know I have).

Bethesda game with a space skin similar to their other games is exactly what people who are hyped for the game wanted.

whatever the game becomes, the magic of bethesda presentations are gone. days of watching oblivion/skyrim/fallout 3/4 demos excitedly while getting hyped for the game are gone. Now its just "oh ok cool."
You just reminded me of Skyrim's unveiling. I got crazy goosebumps the moment the music played and kept watching the trailer daily for nearly a month.

Aaaaand now I'm sad.

The best thing about Bethesda games are the insanely deep amounts of lore. I wonder how they will provide such lore in a game somewhat grounded in realism? I was hoping for a Mass Effect type of setting with many races and backstories.
