OK I'm gonna be honest...this is kind of an L.

The insiders who leaked this were, at least AFAIK, were hyping it to be a remake. Or at least that's what I came to the conclusion of. And it would make sense: this is a 1997 game with rudimentary 3D at its core, why NOT remake it with modern graphics? Wasn't there a GameSpy version back in the day that actually did that to an extent, even tho that version was canceled?

You don't really need any special hardware to run GoldenEye at 4K with decent framerate, people've been doing that on mid-level laptops for years by this point. Heck, some of the budget option laptops out there now can probably do it via emulator, I've seen some able to run PS2 games at 4K 60 (tho it is very game-specific).

But moving on, this does feel kind of like a missed opportunity. Again, why NOT a full-on remake? Keep the core gameplay intact of course, but with modern visuals? It's moves like this which are pretty baffling to me because then you have Sony who are willing to do just that for games even as recent as Demon's Souls, which was awesome. The Crash remakes were also great, and those were also for games highly influential in their day the way GoldenEye was so...was GoldenEye just not deemed worth doing a remake for?

I mean to really get what a potentially missed opportunity this is: we could've gotten a min-remake series for GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, and Perfect Dark Zero. Some teases of (optional) game mechanics from the Perfect Dark reboot put into them. Modern visuals that could've given a glimpse of what to expect from Perfect Dark reboot. They literally could have taken the MCC approach here and done something truly special for a series of games with lots of dedicated fans, and a better presentation draw in new fans before Perfect Dark reboot releases.

Instead we get this. You can spare me the "but it would've needed to run on the Switch too!" arguments; the Switch is at least around Wii U level and can clearly run games significantly better-looking than GoldenEye 007 with ease. Besides if Microsoft were involved in this, you'd think they would have a handling on scaling the game's visual budget across different performance targets, that's kind of their own strategy with the Xbox Series consoles! I really don't see how anyone can look at this and not call it a phoned-in, barebones effort when this could've (and should've) been a remake.

It's an L for both Microsoft and Nintendo IMHO.

I remember having a ball with my friends on the n64 playing the original. I heard they have been trying to release this for the longest, so it's nice to see they finally can. Maybe I'll give it a try if I find one of those $1 gamepass deals.

How come this has taken so long to get out the door? Rumors have been circulating for quite a while and to me personally it only seems to be a 4k version of Goldeneye with online play? Maybe licensing and stuff with Nintendo plays a part of it.

No, this is the remaster. "Faithfully recreated" is in the announcement.
"Faithful" is the key word though. Why would they not show the updated visuals if they were upgrading it?

I really hope you're correct, and yeah it would make zero sense for them to throw all that good work out, but who knows. Hope to be proven wrong.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Well, to be fair they didn't show anything from the Xbox version, just a tweet announcement. Even the Switch was just the title. No real footage was shown, we're assuming the Switch version is the N64 version emulated, but that could also be a fork of the remaster for all we know.

I'm sure we'll get pictures and footage of this in the coming hours or days.

how many splitscreen shooters are there currently that you can compare it with?
The one I pretty much play with family every holiday season is Halo MCC ( used to just be Halo 1, 2, and 3, but these days MCC kicks butt), but we also did some Black Ops 3 and Borderlands 2 over the last few years. We do pull out the retro consoles every few years, and the last time the N64 was out we played a couple rounds of Goldeneye, but ended up playing way more Mario Golf 😀. Seriously, the multiplayer is so basic, and frame rate so terrible. Anyone who has played a lot of modern fps games is only playing Goldeneye for the nostalgia.

These screens aren’t from the Xbox version?

I could actually see them removing the 360 visuals, I honestly always thought they looked a bit shit...
and were not even remotely comparable to what 4J Studios did to Perfect Dark, which looks amazing.

maybe they made a new remaster that looks closer to the N64 original? maybe cleaning up textures to give them a clean retro look or something 🤷

“The original experience has been updated with improved control options (including dual analogue stick support), native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD (where supported), a consistent refresh rate and a full complement of achievements to unlock,” developer Rare said.

This doesn't sound great...

I didn't see those before.

There's an article now too:

Remasters tend to just up the resolution, texture quality, maybe rebalance audio, that type of stuff.

If you're expecting significantly improved character models, environmental models, visual effects, additional physics, that type of stuff...it's usually done with remakes. And I'm sure the team is aware of the differences between a remaster and remake.

Are people really in here trying to console war downplay a game being made available for free inside of a service? Like ffs 🤦🏾‍♂️

I hope they aren't :/

I can only speak for myself here but, IMO this really should've been a remake. No reason they couldn't have produced significantly better visuals, effects, physics etc. with the same core gunplay intact, level design of maps intact etc. and really do the game proud for a modern audience.

Would also have helped immensely in appealing to new players, particularly good if you want some of that work done ahead of a reboot for a series somewhat tied to this game 😉

Looks like online play is exclusive to Switch.

well tbh tho, the online on Switch works like online play in all emulators, the host player sends the game state to the other players, which brings really bad input lag with it... that's not something I'd want to play tbh.

Edit: If this is true, Nintendo really is playing hard ball with that license. Yikes.

As first announced during the latest Nintendo Direct broadcast, a 4K resolution remaster of the Nintendo 64 classic is coming soon to the console’s Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online service.

Switch version is also 4K

Yeah judging by the images it looks like the original graphics but in 4k 60fps.

Nintendo probably didnt want to fund a port of the 360 remake or something, so no one gets it.

Why wouldn't there be? Xbox brings everything to pc

They didn't mention PC in the news article, but I think that's cause this is just being added to Rare Replay, which I don't think is on PC.

GoldenEye 007 will be made available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S as part of Xbox Game Pass. Additionally, players who own a digital copy of Rare Replay, the 30-game compilation of classics from the award-winning studio behind GoldenEye 007’s original release, will be able to download and enjoy the game free of charge.

hella bullets that's true
So how do you actually *purchase* this game to own? Do you buy Rare Replay and then get it downloaded from there? Or can you buy it as a stand alone on the game store?

This is awesome news for Nintendo and Xbox players. I remember playing on N64 at a friend's house when I was a kid. Good times. I hope developers continue to get the message that tapping into nostalgia is good business. Continue to bring in more remakes of beloved franchises. There are so many I would lay down big money for.

Edit: Damn, I just read the headline and assumed it was all good news. Didn't see the somber clarifications going on.

The ROM was leaked and everyone could play that version. No one actually thought about a new remake. Everyone knew we were getting that 360 version but in 4K.

All the more reason this should've been a remake then. Give a bigger incentive to play the game again, if the 360 version leaked.

Wait, from the screens Rare are showing, it's not the 360 remaster nor does it have online on Xbox but it does on Switch? If this is the case, Nintendo has dicked Micorosft with this release.

Either that or Microsoft just did not care. How the actual flip did they manage to lose out on online multiplayer, when they have the superior online service out of the two?

To some degree, no, and the Xbox "version" would need that written in while the Switch version is emulated in the Nintendo Online shell and service so it sort of "comes with" online... still, it's a bad hand Xbox was dealt that it's not the most fully-featured version,. Putting something like this online connectivity into the Xbox's N64 emulator (which would have to be written custom for Xbox anyway) would have been possible but just didn't happen.
