Sony buying Epic would make the Metaverse a reality

I’m talking about the real actual Metaverse that we envision when we watch something like Ready Player one or snowcrash. Fortnite is already huge and already exists as a metaverse with the amount of licensing it has and the virtual concerts and events.

If you pair that with a capable VR Unit you would pretty much have what we’d consider the first real step into a gameified metaverse and not something weird vague tech speak for “connectivity” or whatever facebook and other corps are pushing.

I guess VR GTA Online would also work without the licensing

Epic probably wouldn't clear regulators because of Unreal. It's a similar situation to Nvidia trying to buy ARM; epic is integrated too tightly to much of the industry to be owned by a console maker. Sony couldn't afford Epic either.

Question marks about the affordability of that purchase, whether Tim and Tencent would let it happen and more importantly whether it would go through unless you split out the unreal engine team/product into a separate company.

I don't know. Just sounds like you're daydreaming a bit on this one.

If metaverse is supposed to be a digital recreation of our reality, with fictionalized elements, I'd probably say it's more likely to be ushered in by someone with a large digital footprint like social media companies, google, or Amazon. It's not a coincidence that Facebook literally changed their name to Meta, and has the largest install base for a VR company. Facebook could try to buy Epic and then what would happen? Not that much. It would be Fortnight on Oculus, which honestly could happen anyway without anyone buying Epic. It still would just be a game in VR with lots of random IP marketed in there.
Oculus already does lots of free VR content, concerts, and movies, workouts, social meet ups, work from home integration tools. It still hasn't amounted to a MetaVerse. They literally have a playstation Home style hangout integrated into the system already, and it's just a blip on the radar.

The real Metaverse is likely never going to be controlled by one company. It'll just be the internet collectively. All that would change is some kind of much, much broader change in how we connect to the internet as a whole - like VR, AR, some kind of federally mandated real ID log-in, something like that or all of the above. EPIC will be a tiny little blip in the real Metaverse, which may not even exist for decades or more at this rate.

The Metaverse is just the internet as a whole, with further integration on how we use it. Sony can't even manage cross-gen upgrades on videogames smoothly, or PSN ID name changes. They're not leading the charge of a digital recreation of al commerce, work, and entertainment across all companies. Sony is going to be a tiny, tiny blip as well, making video games and movies.

It needs a company who can game-ify it though. Just standing around chatting isn’t much better than what we have now, we need to be able to shoot and fly like fortnite

I don't think that's what the metaverse is going to be though. No one game would be fun to play forever. The metaverse is going to be dominated by mundane things like chat, socializing, commerce, work, exercise, digital tourism, digital dating. Video games are not the metaverse. IMHO. The metaverse would include all games.

It might not be the core aspect but it will need to be a pillar, like it is on every other platform. Gaming sells hardware, and if VR/Metaverse is ever gonna be a very broadly popular thing it will need to utilize the gaming market, which is a multi-billion dollar industry.

think of how many people game, mobile, pc, gambling, gacha, MMO, F2P.....the metaverse needs gamers to thrive

I know real world is not always pretty n can be a bitch but calm the fuck down... Try LSD or something is you wanna escape it THAT much.

nah. if the metaverse is really to happen it will be when Apple releases their headset next year. that's why facebook are dragging their heels with their new headset. they are waiting to see what Apple does so they can copy them or get a share of it.

games will be a part of the metaverse (virtual reality) but not all of it. the metaverse will be both Augmented and Virtual reality based. I know all we've seen from facebook is that shitty vr chat clone but that's not all it'll be. what they really want is to augment your reality so they track everything you see and overlay ads over shit you see in real life. you won't need to hold up your phone like this anymore to see AR ads:

and it might end up looking something like this:

that's where the money is going to be made for facebook, apple, google, microsoft, etc. that's why there is a big push for metaverse. we all moved to smartphones 10 or so years ago. now they want to get you to wear a headset instead of staring down at your phone. we could go from this:

Not really.

A large consumer facing company, such as Amazon, buying up Epic might actually result in some version of it, but its still years away.

you don’t need a very capable VR headset for any of that. Comfort and ease of use are probably higher on the scale, so an untethered platform will probably be the best bet. Something like a Quest 3.

Meta buying Epic would make the metaverse a reality is seemingly what you are trying to say.
Imagine Ready Player One with all people wearing a headset tethered to an external box via cable :messenger_grinning_squinting:

I very much doubt Sony buy Epic but not sure I see why Epic would not clear regulators due to unreal of all things. Unreal is one of the most widely used engines in a specific space but Unity exists too as do inhouse engines. It's akin to MS buying Havok, ubiquitous and often tightly integrated in the industry, especially for those who can't afford their own physics engine, but regulators are not going to care much because it's not consumer facing and inhouse ones compete. The alternatives are there and they are pretty competitive. Besides, it's not like there is the risk of the engine not being licensed.

I would love it was mixed with Astrobot!
We all see how fun the clothing on him/them are.
And all the problembs with PS3@Home™ is gone!
No grey mannequins cause SSD loads them instantly, loads of ram for large areas/instances and items&clotchings , integrated party from the get go, huge potential play areas and MP "areas/instances" of games for people to gather and que up togheter!
Hell, throw in VR while we are at it, so we can VR bowl @Home™

Sony would probably not be able to afford Epic and it wouldn't pass if they did, due to Unreal. Even Microsoft wouldn't be able to complete the purchase probably.

do Sony have the money to do this?

after all its not just games its also their tech that a lot of studios use to make their own games.

Sony's problem has always been timing...They are either way ahead of the curve, to the point that nobody follows, or too late to the party, after the cake has been eaten.

Its more plausible Epic buying Sony.

Epic Games was valued at $32 billion this past April. Sony has a market cap of $85 billion.

A merger would be more plausible than either acquiring the other. But neither is likely.

Metaverse is a dumb idea. It is another way of saying heaven or paradise, but instead of sitting on clouds admiring god, you are sitting on clouds admiring corporate logos.
