Hermen Hulst - PlayStation GAAS releasing day-one on PC, SP games at least one year after console release

Also up against a 360 which had rrod which bolstered sales thanks to people getting more consoles than usual
Not true at all, except for people who were trigger happy buying a new system and throwing out their old one since MS offered I think a 3 year extended warranty on the early systems.

Any system exchanged at a store has a sales record of zero as it’s +1 for the new system and a -1 to refunded systems.

Any system exchanged and repaired from MS wouldn’t even count in sales tracking as that’s not a store tracked purchase with prices and UPC codes. Even if it was it would be one in and one out. Zero sum.

I dont get it. PS3 had plenty of first party mp games. You dont need to go to PC to sustain anything. This is a console that is going to sell 100 million units. If you cant sustain an audience with 100 million players then maybe you should try and make better games.

And I dont care. I have PC with a GPU 2x more powerful than my PS5. Id rather game on PC anyway. I am simply pointing out misleading statements by this exec. Something i called out immediately while you all were in denial.
Not every single console user buys or plays a game. 10% if you're lucky.

I'm thinking they're going to have it ready by the time the show launches, or just after the last episode of the show.
Doubt it cause the show is coming Q1/Q2 2023.

Meanwhile Naughty Dog are only promising a “big update” on the game at some point in 2023. (June?)

Feels like it’s not coming til like Q1 2024.

I assumed it was a Fall show, but that makes sense. I still expect it end of next year the latest to time with the show hype and market it after each episode in little ads.

They’d still be out of pocket compared to porting once it has gone gold. The only reason MS switched to day and date on PC was because they moved to DirectX.
Literally pocket change for a big return.
Sony is bigger than ZeniMax, iD manage to have Playstation API, DirectX for Xbox and Vulkan for PC out day and date.
Was it an added cost, sure, was it worth the return....you bet your bottom dollar it was.

Literally pocket change to Sony to have a team or teams have the console and PC versions ready within release window.
Their GaaS game day and date experiment will likely just be them testing how efficiently they can have both versions ready.

Its not the most challenging thing for smaller dev, relatively easy for medium sized studios and absolute pocket change for Sonys studios with support from XDev, ICE, Nixxes and/or Bluepoint.
Pocket change my G.....if theres one thing NOT stopping them, its the added dev costs.

Do some people really hate the idea of other people playing on PC rather than on a console that much?
This topic in particular always seems to generate pages and pages of arguing and discussion, but I'm struggling to see the big deal tbh.

If some are concerned about the Playstation brand suffering or something, Sony will still generate even more revenue in the end by supporting PC.
Other than that I can't imagine why anyone would even care if they already decide which platform they'll be playing on.
The vast majority of people will always play on consoles because it's financially more viable and convenient than investing time and money in a gaming PC.
Giving people the option to play Sony 1st party titles on PC isn't going to change that anytime soon. Gamers win regardless so why the fuss?

The key argument is multifold:

1. You got armchair profit supporters. Never mind the product itself, it’s gotten so bad people protect the balance sheets. I don’t think even the typical hardcore Apple fan cares about bragging that Apple makes $100 Billion profit per year. They just enjoy the brand and product.

2. The “you got to make me feel good” strategy. Having a game on their system is fun, but for some people it’s more fun when other people don’t play it. It’s counter intuitive because you’d think they’d enjoy it more if more people play it especially since gaming can have cross play MP lobbies making the online user base bigger and longer lasting in MP game. Guess not.

3. Also part of it is the “there’s no point me buying the console if it’s on PC” rhetoric. Which is going to be most BS since how many gamers are there who game on PS and will suddenly dump their console for a PC rig because the games are now dual platform? Ok maybe some. But can’t be that many as Sony execs are going full blown PC porting. So unless this strategy backfires big time on them, even they know there’s more to gain from PC users and indifferent gamers than fully transitioning PS to PC gamers.

Although in hindsight this was a little premature

Mindsets 1&2 sound irrational to me lol. I totally get being a fan of something, but taking it to the extent that you'd want others to miss out is just extremely bizarre, and I agree, it does seem counterintuitive.

The “there’s no point in buying the console if it’s on PC” argument is silly since no one is forcing anyone to buy anything.
If anything there is now less reason to spend money on unnecessary hardware just to play one or a few titles they're interested in. If you already have a capable gaming PC, why spend money on something you don't need, right?
No one is actually losing out with this model.

wants to fuck an Asian grill.
So we can expect Factions to release day-and-date on PC yeah? Hopefully supports crossplay option so community is big.

What time is it?
People taking "at least one year" to mean "one year" and further extrapolating that to "day and date very soon" is a fun ride. It was always going to be a fluid situation. Evergreen titles are probably going to utilize the "at least" portion of that statement while games without legs will probably just be the "one year" portion. Getting people into the console ecosystem is important for Sony and if this strategy has an impact on that, this is just a faucet that can be tightened or loosened as needed.

I'm also assuming PS+ Essential and Premium offerings are going to follow the PC release schedule.

the funny thing is that this PC experiment didnt work out too well for MS. They started porting games to PC around 2016 and sales just fell off a cliff. It didnt help sell Halo which had underwhelming sales despite launching on steam on day one. Forza barely cracked top 20 behind Back4Blood and Mortal Kombat 2019.

If going to PC was going to bring the riches, MS wouldnt have had to go scorched earth and spend over $80 billion to acquire Zenimax and Activision just to 'compete' with playstation. The same Playstation that went from selling 5 million copies to 20 million for GOW, Uncharted, TLOU, Spiderman and Horizon. And around 10 million for TLOU2, Days Gone and GoT. They dont need the PC audience.

But hey, im sure they will be forced to go out and buy Ubisoft or Square Enix when their sales crash just like Microsoft did. It's funny how Nintendo seems to be doing just fine just focusing on one SKU. They actually killed their console business (or their handheld one. pick one) to focus on one SKU and they seem to be selling 20+ million for pretty much every franchise without begging PC users.

Very Soon is from them. TLOU isnt a GaaS Game AFAIK.

narratives:
  • Sony will never release their games on PC
  • Only non-flagship games will come out on PC
  • Sony will only release PS4 games on PC
  • Sony will release PS5 games after several years on PC
  • Sony will release games after a year on PC (***We are here***)
  • All Sony games will be released on PS5 and PC simultaneously

So if you are in rush to play first party games but inferior version for scamming 70$ US/ 90 CAD, buy a ps5.

If you wait a year ( for now, soon it will be less ) you will get:

- A better version of those single player games
- They will work on whatever pc u own 30 years from now
-Not to worrying about console backward compatibility and devs not updating their game or Sony trying to be scum as they are now and charge you 70$ For that 60 frames toggle..
-You get it cheaper day one on pc from many third party sellers.

….

Does anyone wants to buy my ps5 ?
usually takes me a year at least to finally get around to playing all those pop titles everyone hypes up anyway, i understand the whole vibe about getting in the mix and playing it on release at the same time as "everyone else" but quite honestly i think a lot of that is brainwashing and marketing. because it's obvious that there's a huge incentive to publishers to convince people that they absolutely can't miss a launch and it's mandatory to play day one and pay full price, to that i give a big middle finger.

i lose absolutely nothing by waiting years to play a game, if anything it's better because it frees up my time to actually live my life. not that i really have one anyway but still.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
I dont care about them releasing games on PC, as PC hardware doesnt hold games back. Its CROSS GEN crap thats the issue.

Agreed. Honestly maybe it’s just COD is the only game I buy day one. Rest ? Yeah it can wait . Because I never finish a game anyway.

It wasn't that long ago that most (I recall one guy :messenger_tears_of_joy:was anti-crossplay) of the enthusiasts were crucifying them for not allowing cross play in online games. Now we're going to crucify them for not gating off multi-player?
Ummm ....yes ...it's a basic matter of fairness. Having cross play set as the default makes every multuplayer game an unfair playing field right from the start. It's total bullshit

Depends who you define as "we" as there is a subset already proclaiming the last narrative. While that last narrative is a strong possibility, it's a money game and if day-and-date releases have no impact on their Playstation ecosystem, then we'll get day-and-date releases. Conversely, if this strategy has an impact, they'll walk it back. If I were a gambler, my money would be on the former.

sony are alway gonna do whats best for them currently. Don’t take anyones word on what they will do in the future.

They’ve managed to stay ahead of the game by being highly adaptable. They’ve already said this is what works for them now, everyone trying to do a preemptive gotcha about sony eventually doing something else is missing the point.

I really just believe people are just drawn to these discussions because xbox got bullied last gen by putting their games on pc day 1 and those people need validation that it was the right move and the people who were doing the bullying are starting to look dumb so they are doubling down for no real reason.

We knew from GaaS games a long time ago from their reports that those would be on PS5/PC day one and even on PS+.

I wonder how will this affect console sales long-term.

Well, anybody who wants a PS5 will still get one, I guess. I know I ain't building a 1k rig just to play games.
