Hogwarts Legacy | Review Thread

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Wait - I laugh emoji'd your post cause I thought you made a joke that was funny. Did I misinterpret your post?

Trying feebly to bring us back to talking about the game :p

but I have a feeling that latest tweet from Daniel Ahmed and co will probably lead to a lot of discussion now.

The amount of drama surrounding this game, even here most of discussion is about the drama rather actual game itself.

Totally. I have zero interest in the whole franchise, but the fake-outrage is such a psychological shit-show I can't help but be fascinated by it all.

Its like the ultimate example of virtue-signalling. On a rational, ethical basis these boycotts are indefensible. HP is a huge pop-cultural brand so the game is going to sell huge regardless. JK Rowling has fuck you money already and isn't going to back down on her positions - especially as her views are in fact protected speech. Making a stand over this is inevitably going to produce a Streisand effect due to the way we all understand the internet works.

Basically, there are no upsides to this financially or in terms of deplatforming JK Rowling or damaging her income-wise.

So why do it?

It seems to me the most egregiously unacceptable outcome involves these people having having to admit that there's actually nothing particularly wrong or objectionable about the game. Now this might not seem so bad as their ire is fixated on the author personally, it all emanates from Rowling's political views after all.

I suspect they'd argue that saying anything positive validates Rowling indirectly (which is a stretch to say the least!); but I'd argue in actuality its more about them saving face. They are embarrassed and simply doubling down.

That's just called child abuse, though. Same thing regardless of if the abuser is gay or straight. That's still not going to turn someone gay, but it will cause them lifelong trauma.
That's true and it does go both ways. Abuse and trauma. Most people don't believe it goes both ways.

Everyone will be there soon, and probably are there in OT. Game looks to have year long conversational legs and will still be hot topic at GOTY time.

You're right though. Game deserves more attention than lunatics. But I also think some of us who remember what those people did on and to this board are just enjoying the end result. EL was the only one who they defamed and attacked financially. But the people who started that place ruined a lot of good times for older members here based on bullshit. And banned (from here on their way out) who knows how many of us for not bending the knee to their false gods. Can't help but enjoy watching the bill come due.

Still can't believe the owner of ERA sold it for $4.5M, kept every single cent, and has basically received no backlash.

Back on topic, with the first critical hit for Avalanche, I am interested in seeing in what they do next. Do we think there will be DLC for Hogwarts?
I want quidditch as dlc!

To me this whole drama surrounding this game is just petty and nonsensical, K R-or who ever the fuck she is can be complete asshole, it has nothing to do with devs who are making this game. You might as well not buy Bloodborne because its theme heavily based on H. P. Lovecraft and the guy was known to be racist.

There is more serious shit going on in the world that people need to worry about rather than over this stupid nonsense.

AND I STILL RECOMMEND FORSPOKEN to folks especially when it drops in price!

*record scratch* Who me? You recommend that i be a rough and tumble orphan from the mean streets of New York City who gets sucked into Athia, a magical beautiful and cruel new land that immediatly tries to kill me? But i find this fucking talking bracelet that won't shut up! Wow he sounds like a serial killer. I just moved shit with my mind! Is that a motherfucking dragon?

Interesting. Probably deliberately delayed due to a number of other reviews pointing out visual problems and pop in on all versions, which DF will amplify more than other reviewers.
A guy just ended his stream because it was lagging that much on an rtx3080 it was like slideshow

Funny coming from Mr Ahmad, since he was one of the site's original admins and part of the Gaf exodus scam.

destructoid's attempt at 'diplomacy':

Hogwarts Legacy is on track to be one of the biggest releases of the year. It’s also a major franchise adaptation in a well-known IP — that alone is newsworthy. However, it’s also rooted in the original works of Harry Potter and its author — as the Hogwarts Legacy FAQ itself states, Rowling’s writing is “the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World.”

With that in mind, our own Chris Carter will be handling the review of Hogwarts Legacy. We’ll give it due criticism and context, the same we’d give to any other game. Destructoid will also publish guides for Hogwarts Legacy. And no writer who feels uncomfortable playing or discussing Hogwarts Legacy will be made to do so.

Our role in criticism and coverage is to inform, contextualize, and provide valuable insight. And we’ll endeavor to give Hogwarts Legacy the due critique any serious work is deserved...

smh. when do these 'concerned' folks come to accept the fact that the woke simply don't do 'diplomacy'? that's it's their way or the highway?...

I honestly have a hard time believing that Game Informer would publish an article critical of that website, but this would have been really interesting to read.

You can't publish that article in the gaming press
It would have to be an outside thing. Maybe something like Vice.
The last ten years on video game forums has been amazing. You could argue that two equal and opposite political movements have been born out of video game forums.

Dude, someone over there called Rowling, and I Quote, “Literally One of the most Dangerous People in the World”. They are completely lost in la la land.

Feel terrible for anyone who has to make a living catering to gamers. It's really not worth it nowadays. Good lord. Put those coding skills to work making gambling apps or something.

You got it all wrong. Frey got a pretty ok character arc and that bracelet got some reasons to be an asshole. There is a story in this game. It's it's worst part but it's there :p And the setting is pretty cool

Looks like Gamespot isn't going to be reviewing the game. I'm sure there are some people who work there that want to play the game, but they're afraid of the backlash from certain co-workers.

This user bought the Digital Deluxe version for my daughter (Madalyn) and myself. I can’t thank him enough. And thanks to everyone else that said they would help as well. I can’t express my gratitude enough.

We got the PS5 version. She has yet to play on the PS5, so this will be her first game on it. She normally plays on her switch, her tablet or my Series X. I figured she’d get a kick out of the dualsense features.

Thanks again cormack12 cormack12

and the game still banned in the other site.

I immediately knew this was the transgender because their voice is legit one of the manliest in the game, lulz.

Also - one of the female teachers is lesbian. I know this because she goes out her way to say she has a wife. Which is of course the only way you will ever learn this and of course only the gay character has to say they have a same-sex partner but hey, representation for the win!

Checked there earlier and it had articles for it, as well as advertisements for the game (but like a lot of sites the ads probably change depending on who visits and where)… but if it’s a protest of not reviewing it, it’s pretty poor one since no statement has been made either way from them.

TBH I think they’re purposely late for the review pulling the: ‘we had a Trans charity thing in place of a review for a day in solidarity’ then posts their review later on regardless.

I have had the game for a few days…

But am extremely sick. Haven’t felt like playing an ounce.

Just a take from a while back…

But Niero (destructoid owner) is a good dude. When I was in the industry and subsequently the gaming media, I spoke with him a several times for various reasons. He was by far one of the best dudes in the gamingsphere I dealt with. In fact, he was probably THE best.

Unrelated to the controversy, but just a take from personal experience.

this's good to hear. destructoid's probably my most trusted review site. which's why i found this 'statement' to be pretty disappointing...

lol Gotham Knights had an NPC like that. You get missions from like 10 different NPCs in the game. They all give you random info about the mission to you before giving you the side quest but this lady started off talking about her wife. My wife this my wife that. I just laughed. The gay characters in games nowadays are defined by their sexuality and/or gender. Not their character.
