EXCLUSIVE - PS5 Pro in Development, Could Release Late 2024

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
If it comes out late next year that will be a 4 year cycle and no one is forced to buy these things

I for one will gladly buy upgraded consoles every 4 years as the old console life cycle of 7+ years is dead and I am glad it is as it lasted way too long
If the console needs replacing within 4 years then the manufacturer didn't make a good console.
We know when development starts on NextGen Consoles and how long it takes from the first leak to it's eventual release and if it's lifespan is less then that my kind sir, then it is a failure.
And anything releasing so shortly after that is a rushed product designed to just pushes money in the manufacturers pockets then push the industry forward.

Gens used to be 5 years apart. If they want to go back to that fine.

Stretching it out 7 to 8 years I'll take one in between.

As long as it doesn't divide a user base I see no big deal. 4 to PRO handled it nicely. The worst I seen was GoWR was built with PS4 in mind because shouldn't have been loading times or tunnels.

You wouldn't reply with such a tone and so often if you were not offended. You definitely are, I just want to know why. Why does having a higher performing version of the PS5 offend you?

Why does someone not wanting to buy one offend you?

If this rumor is true, then it's highly likely that Xbox will also have a more powerful version of the Series X since they like to have the most premium and powerful hardware. I dearly love my Series X, but I'm supremely satisfied with it and I doubt I'd buy the upgraded version.

Need replacing? Of course the PS5 does not NEED to be replaced

Do I want pro versions of the PS5 and Series X and would I buy one day 0?

I am sure you are misreading the thread. People are not complaining that they won't buy one, people hate the existence of a Pro version, usually based on faulty assumptions.

If a Pro can give me RT Fidelity modes at 60fps instead of having to choose one or the other I'm in.

I don't think only a GPU upgrade would necessarily allow that across the board though, as even with hardware acceleration RT is quite heavy on the CPU, so that would need a nice bump too.

The PS5 pro will never happen because their isn’t a reason for it to exist. The only reason we got a PS4 pro was due to 4K. The PS5 pro doesn’t have a strong enough value proposition for it to be marketable. 4K/60 FPS with RT is the only benefit I can see with a pro and that’s not enough for most people to want to buy into the console.

Heck, we barely even have games that is pushing the current PS5 lol
There are 5+ million enthusiasts who will pay top dollar for a product like that. It doesn’t have to be the main seller as XBO X and PS4 Pro already showed.

30 FPS vs 60 FPS in current gen games? It's not so complicated.
Yup. People have been spoiled with 60fps because of last gen ports / backward compatibility or cross gen.

There is not a chance an UE5, AAA, open World, graphically impressive current gen only game (with visuals like the Matrix demo) will run at 1440p/60fps on PS5 or Series X.

The Pro is most likely in development to service people that do want them at 60fps in part because they’ve seen the extremely positive reception of AAA 60fps games on consoles versus 30fps last gen.

It's bad news for me if true, yeah i know i don't have to buy it but whan games will start running at 30fps on PS5 and 60fps on PS5 Pro then lets see how much willpower i have (none i guess).
I don't need a PS5 every 4 years, the X360/PS3 gen was amazing for me and i didn't need any Pro version. Also it was almost a miracle to get a PS5 day one so i don't want to go through that again.

I would be annoyed if the pro has 60fps but the standard model was left at 30fps. That's a massive difference and would make the standard PS5 useless to me. It'll be better if both can do 60 fps but the pro could maintain a higher resolution and have better visuals and stuff.

Plus you guys are forgetting PSVR2. Allowing all games to run at 90fps in VR would be a good thing.

Tom Henderson : I know about PS6 but haven't heard anything about PS5 Pro

Months later PS5 Pro is coming next year & it will be 2028 before we see PS6

Then what's the point? Enthusiasts already own a PS5. Profits on hardware are minimum at best. A PS5 pro isn't going to expand the user base and its only going to increase game development costs. What's the benefit here?
Enthusiasts have money to spend and are willing to spend on higher level hardware.
Sony baked in a lot margin on the new Dualsense Edge. No reason why they can’t do it with a PS5 Pro.
PS5 Pro can add more users- think of the influx of used PS5s that will come to market. Cheaper entry point for owners on a budget.
It's for the people who complain about 30 fps games.
Like me. Fuck 30fps.

I honestly don't really want a mid-gen refresh because I know I won't be able to stand not having the more powerful one. That happened to me with the PS4 to Pro.

It's not that I can't afford it or anything, it's just an annoyance that I had with constantly upgrading PC's which I was trying to avoid with consoles, and now it's being more-or-less the same thing. PITA!

They just need to ride out this gen with what they have now and save the upgrades for PS6. Slim versions are fine, but that should be it until PS6.

Quick somebody tell us which GPU equivalent this thing will have.

If I had to guess I would say around 7800/4070 (not Ti) tier.

N32 is 60CU in 200mm² and phoenix with 12CUs is around 176mm² which includes a lot of IO. With layout optimisation that would be 72CUs in 350mm² or less imo, especially of all built on N4.

Seems like a sensible upper bound and really double the GPU is about the minimum required for a Pro version. Expect the clocks on that would be lower than desktop N32 parts so performance would probably be similar ish.

Do what I did and just sell your PS5 for $200 to afford the Pro model. That takes some of the edge off.

It will be CPU related. Zen4 is 35% faster clock equalised than Zen2 and at the same power draw Zen 4 clocks a lot higher as well so you would be looking at a 50% IPC improvement at the minimum. With the extra L3 cache that Zen4 APUs have over Zen2 ones, and the fact it is unified that could be a lot more in games as you see with the X3D performance uplifts.

How would a PS5 PRO reduce the performance of a PS5?
cmon man. even a tiniest amount of imagination and empathy.
I would get the pro too but I dont't want that economic model
edit: ANYWAY - I would get it and I hope it would not be a nightmare to buy

Besides power, I think that a better selling point would be full hardware backwards compatibly with PS1 PS2 and PS3 games. Meaning that you insert your disc and play.

That will excite so many PlayStation hardcore fans.
Not going to happen especially if they are selling a service for this.

I don't see how you figure that. That would only be an issue if they dropped support for the OG model in 4 years. I don't see how a more powerful box that basically exists to push a few more sliders towards ultra or improve the framerate (or both) is such a bad thing for gamers. Especially when the systems can simply be ignored if these benefits don't interest you. Personally, I just had the base X1/PS4 last gen and never picked up the mid-gen models.

No thank you. I don't believe the industry needs to focus on visuals. Instead, concentrate on performance and making better games. Who wants to play prettier games that end up playing like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry? Not this guy.

100%. Think about even Sony's own statements about why they made the ps4 pro. they saw people moving to PC. one huge reason i did and many others is to chase performance/resolution etc. there is absolutetly a market for a Pro console.

You'd also have to assume that those people (ie us) spend quite a lot more than the average consumer on games. It's probably a much bigger share of the market than it looks at first sight.

I didn't get the original PS5 and don't plan to anytime soon, depending on the game catalogue ...ie if it gets a new Ridge Racer/Motorstorm/Metal Gear by the time this Pro releases then I'll jump in
