Microsoft hasn't done but two things to keep Sony in check:
Jack and Shit. And Jack left town.

MS biggest failure is their inability to get a steady flow of first party games. Spare me the bullshit of them just acquiring their studios. These studios they acquired have been around for 10+ years. There is no reason that they shouldn't be able to release 2-3 major games a year with all the studios they own. Not to mention they don't do anything worthwhile with the IPs they do own. They should have a studio working on a new Fallout game, a new Elder Scrolls game, a new Doom game. The simple fact of the matter is that they do not have competent people managing their studios.

They are working on those games. Elder Scrolls VI is in production, but that isn't seeing the light of day until at least 2027. Todd Howard also confirmed Fallout 5 will be after that, but when will that release? 2035? Rumour has it a new Quake is also in development, but considering there is nothing official, even if it's real it's probably years away.

I do however agree that Microsoft could have done more with these IPs they're sat on. Even if it was just a remake of Fallout 3 or Oblivion with a modern lick of paint.

I swear some people seem to want Xbox to fail, gaming is better when all the main platform holders are doing well

Ofcourse I want to see them fail. Buying your way to the top and still suck? That does not deserve praise and honestly only deserves failure.
Still surprised people are stanning for Xbox. I was a number one fan but good grieve have they fucked up. All my friends were hardcore Xbox fans and they all left Xbox behind and didn’t even follow news on the Series. Lost interest in the brand.
Hopefully they will go third party and a new console maker will stand up.

Maybe they do have studios working on fallout and doom. Bethesda may want to keep elder scrolls for themselves.

So Sony doesn’t buy developers? Did Sony buy naughty dog? Did Sony buy insomniac? Did Sony buy bungie? Did Sony buy guerrilla? Did Sony by bend? How about media molecule? How about all the recent acquisitions?

In the acquisition thread: “MS doesn’t need to acquire publishers to compete. They have more than enough studios”

In this thread: “Well, now that Microsoft isn’t getting Activision, they’re certainly in a death spiral and will collapse into a third party soon”

They’ll be fine.

how many of those are publishers?

A publisher is really just a collection of developer studios, though. Microsoft acquired Ninja Theory, Playground Games, inXile, Obsidian games , Undead Labs and Compulsion Games, in 2018…would it have been any different if all six were housed in one umbrella company?

I hope MS was smart enough to build up a few big releases to coincide with starfields launch. Having starfield and forza along two or three other big releases going into the holidays would be a big boost.

Sony doesn’t suck for 2 gens tho. MS just buys and buys and still suck. Trillion dollar company can’t compete so they buy their way to the top. Even that fails.

That wasn’t the argument. It’s about buying developers. Sonys bought plenty. Nearly every big Sony studio was bought.

Tell me how many publishers Sony bought? I rest my chase...

It's clickbait, because we don't know what Xbox has in store.

Give it 2-3 years and post this again. By that time, Xbox will have issues, if they don't address any of your concerns.

As of now, there is time. And anything can happen during these times.

All you need to look at is Bethesda acquisition before and after for Xbox.
Wasn't it "SOONY" at one point. Now xbox owners are constantly moving the proverbial timeline goal posts.

None of what you are surmising is even remotely likely anytime in the near or mid-term future. Eventually all consoles will go away, because of the ubiquity of phones and controller shells, and not needing local hardware once cloud streaming becomes the dominant form of delivery. But that will affect Sony and Nintendo the same as it would Xbox.

Xbox will be fine, no need to worry yourself. Enjoy the content and the hardware, let them worry about the business.

One of two things will happen:

1. Phil or one of the Xbox higher ups will be fired.

2. Xbox will leave the console business and become a 3rd party publisher.

I just can’t see them continuing down the same path because clearly it isn’t working. Hardware is down 30% and a 3%-4% growth in revenue is nothing to celebrate, when you consider the amount of money they have invested with there last billon dollar investment seeming to fall apart. It don’t take a rocket scientist to see they have major issues to fix.

23 studios but nothing to show for it, it’s puzzling that Phil and the same team is still employed after all these setbacks.
There’s a third option.

They respond to the UK regulator, clarify cloud policy and the acquisition goes through.

What about them? Sony has them properly managed and releasing actual games on a regular basis....

The way I see it, Sony's acquisitions add to the industry. None of their acquisitions have taken any games off of Xbox.

On the other hand, Xbox's acquisitions have mainly been about taking games off of PlayStation. That's their way of leveling the playing field. That's not productive or gamer-friendly.

There is no productivity in acquisition.
Just like how Xbox acquisiion takes games from other systems, Sony is denying talent studios from making multiplatform games in the future, in order to boost their talent.

At end of the day, its about keeping talent people to yourself. Money talks, and us consumers get the end of the stick.

Calm down, they have 23 studios and most haven’t announced anything yet, most projects should be 3+ years into development by now. The summer events should show where they’re heading.
Actually, most of the main studios have already announced what they are working on:
  • Rare = Working on Sea of Thieves / Everwild
  • Ninja Theory = Hellblade 2
  • 343 = Halo Infinite
  • Double Fine = Unannounced
  • Mojang = Minecraft
  • Obsidian = TOW 2 / Avowed
  • Undead Labs = State of Decay 3
  • The Coalition = Gears 6
  • Compulsion Games = Unannounced
  • InXile = Unannounced
  • Turn 10 = Forza
  • Playground = Fable
  • Arkane = Redfall
  • Bethesda = Starfield
  • Tango = Just released Hi-Fi Rush
  • id Software = Unannounced
  • Machine Games = Indiana Jones
The rest are support / mobile studios if I remember correctly.

So out of these 17 main studios, only 4 can potentially announce a new game this year.

It's funny how gaming community react. At the beginning of this gen, a lot of negative buzz was generated for ps5 and a lot of positive one for xbox series console. Now, suddently, xbox consoles are doomed. At least OP is speaking only about hw consoles and not xbox gaming in general but, man, since when the community has become so absolutist for everything?

Xbox apologists were saying this last year, the year before......
Well it was true then as well, games were just 2+ years into development instead of 3+. We’re now at a point where some studios should have something to show. I expect the June event to be spectacular tbh, definitely way more than Forza, Hellblade, Starfield.

I want MS to continue but fix their management. Phil need needs to go. He's absolutely trash.

Oh better some CEO without any passion for gaming.
Spencer started the acquisition in 2018. 5 Years is nothing for AAA, multiplaform project yet to release and with 2 y of covid too. Blame che CEOs before him
