That is a more reasonable take, but that's what you asserted in your last post.

It's because you're conflating intentions with actions.

Regardless of intention, that's what they've been asked to do and they aren't capable of doing it. Few studios could produce by themselves first party quality content enough to carry a console.

Really, only Nintendo is REALLY qualified to do it. Sony is getting there.

EA, T2, Ubi-Soft, they'd all similarly fail.

It easily is and I'd argue it might even be worse. Nothing at the E3 announcement couldn't be fixed relatively easily. You can't erase a drought of 2 years and longer if Starfield doesn't deliver.

Can't stress enough how bad this looks against Final Fantasy 16 and Spider-Man 2. Unless those games similarly disappoint, Microsoft has a lot of problems on its hands.

Yep. The only thing that really matters when you're a video games console manufacturer and developer is the games you create and sell. And Xbox have absolutely been left in the dust by the other two major video games manufacturers and developers. It's as pathetic as it is hard to understand. How the hell do you have such a huge amount of financial resource and personnel at your disposal, for a decade, and have little to nothing to show for it?

Microsoft like Sony at first didn't really focus much on 1st party. That was always a Sega and Nintendo thing. It wasn't until the early 2000s that Sony started to put real effort into 1st party mostly around Naughty Dog (bought) and Santa Monica (internal). They'd also buy Zipper Interactive and Sucker Punch.

Microsoft LOST developers. They had a close relationship with Epic (probably could have bought them) and that went away. They alienated and lost Bungie. They wasted the talent of Rare. Lionhead was allowed to implode.

By the time Sony was doubling down on its studios, Microsoft's first party was shrinking, but it didn't matter because the 360 was a hit.

Sony's first party didn't really begin to pay dividends until the PS4.

I'm not conflating anything. It's the reality of game development. MS looks at what's on their roadmap and it just so happened Zenimax had 3 titles that they feel could be ready for 2023 release. This view also has to pretend that one of their biggest games "Forza Motorsport" isn't going to be releasing this year.

GamePass. Quantity is king.
Not likely. Looking at the game today, how many more years of development would it have taken to get into the shape it actually needed to be? Two? Three? It's already had four. Microsoft cut their losses, and looking at the foundation, it's hard to argue. Redfall just isn't interesting, and getting Arkane onto something that the developers are passionate about would be priority number one.

Microsoft knows that Forza Motorsports isn't going to push units.

Played for 30 minutes or so and it feels like it's stuck in time. I'll see how far I get, but I don't think it will be much fun solo.

I have said it here before Xbox sends gifts in the form of game pass cards and SSDs to people like this to put Xbox in a favorable light

And yes I have the receipts and have shared them with mods here
Yes!! Thats hilarious! Is that why this dude named himself after a first party game? or weird accounts like Klobrille exist?

The talent has left the building. Now we know why Bethesda was accepting so many timed exclusive deals. Zenimax cashed in as soon as MS called.

Revisionist bs, apparently Harvey Smith was telling people the complete opposite.
Perhaps that is also why Sony got timed-exclusivity deals for Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo but not for Redfall and ... Starfield.

6 years. It was in production for 6 years, not 4. Last Harvey Smith game was released in 2017 and that was only dlc to Dishonored 2.
If they could they would probably cancel it in 2021, but I don't think MS was in position to cancel it. Shitstorm after that would be IMO even worse than what is happening now.

Plenty of people on the Steam forums complaining about low. performance. And stutters are a metric in performance, in fact it's the most important, as it affects the minimum fps.
Which is really bad, for a game that looks like an early PS4 game.

But that was not the point I was making.
Lately came out a couple of games, sponsored by AMD, that had performance issues. And some NVidia fanboys immediately blamed AMD for that.
But when it's a poorly optimized game sponsored by NVidia, they look the other way. Just look at Redfall, Warhamer: Darktide, Battlefield 2042.

The fact of the matter is that NVidia, AMD and Intel only sponsor games to include them with their GPUs, and implement their tech. Not to optimize games and fix bugs. That work is for the devs.

It’s tinfoil hat/conspiracy theory silliness blaming poor performance on a company for doing a promotion, rather than the developers/publisher.

For what it’s worth GGManlives reported poor performance on his 4080, in his review.

I remember when Arkane's head proudly said that Redfall's vampires was an allegory on rich. Guess they went "eat the rich" before "finish the game" :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Still it is hilarious how with all the hype of "Arkane does not miss" we got Redfail, joining the ranks of Forgotten. It is like FO76 from BGS essentially.

One thing is that this is the reality of Xbox deciding to just announce games with CG trailers years and years in advance. Well before they are even ready for public reveals

It has made it so projects that aren't coming together at all are pushed to the finish line

If this were Sony or Nintendo no way it would have been unveiled so early, and probably could have been quietly shelved in the background when it was obviously not working

Massive blunder by Xbox, and yes I mean Xbox not Arkane. What an unbelievably foolish move to buy a studio that makes 9-10/10 games (something Xbox SEVERLEY lacks btw) and then allow them to release this unpolished, generic piece of garbage.

Great, another world-class studio I no longer have any faith in. Shame on them for launching in this state, I hope it sells like shit and they get rightfully lambasted. They basically had a monopoly on FPS immersive Sims and were killing it in that genre. But fuck it, they wanted a slice of that generic FPS market and end up exposing the fact that the studio is likely nowhere is talented as we once thought, and are actually just really good at doing one thing (nothing wrong with that btw). SO MS, why don't you make your studios focus on what they are good at? We should be looking at Dishonored 3 running in UE5, with cutting-edge visuals, innovative AI, truly living environments, running buttery smooth on "the worlds most powerful console". Instead we get this, and as an Arkane fan, I feel truly embarrassed for them.

MS looked at GoW, BotW and Elden Ring and thought to themselves "those games may be pretty good, genre-defining GOATs but...... have you guys ever heard of Far Cry?".

Seems Redfall is a bit of stinker according to GameSpot who gave this 4/10. I was never that excited about this game anyway, it always looked underwhelming in the gameplay footage, but I will briefly try it on GamePass on my PC before uninstalling it just to see how bad it runs (Unreal Engine + DX12 = #StutterStruggle!).

Meanwhile the wait for the Xbox Series X's amazing first triple-A exclusive continues. Best not hold my breath for Starfield though... I have a feeling that might be disappointing as well...

Do we have any kind of official timeline for the development of this game?

Just wondering whether it's a similar situation to Rocksteady and that Suicide Squad GaaS shit - where it seems like they were developing another curated, single player experience, and were then ordered to drop it in favour creating a multiplayer/GaaS/gatcha nightmare turd for the greedy executives.

It's ok, XBox Era say it's a 8.5 and they really know their stuff

Are we expecting a Tweet from Arkane/Phil Spencer/Zenimax that, "We are noticing the feedback. And we promise to improve our game quality in the future." etc., like they sometimes do?

Or are we expecting them to brush it under the rug and not add to the negativity surrounding the brand by publicly acknowledging the issues/failure of Redfall?

What would be the better option for Microsoft right now to protect their PR and brand value perception?

I find this much better than Deathloop. But my GOD are the graphics rough in places, the explosions looks basic and so last gen and the 30 FPS is a killer, looking left or right makes you feel sick

Not sure where the Starfield concern is coming from other than fanboy warring tbh.
Starfield could launch like redfall and it'll still score high because it's Bethesda... Seems certain studios get a pass on shit, while others are held to a way higher accountability.

ok, fam, new day, a new beginning. is it time to talk about Phil or are we going to keep indulging this man's failures?
Never , mistakes from before were solely due to matrick, but current are solely due to matt booty...The trick is to think about any bullshit reason that might remove responsibilities from Phil...It used to be because of the people above him but now it is because of the people under him.Weirdly enough the constant in those mistakes is Phil but who cares he wears Tshirts and make bullshit promises why would he be accountable for the branch he is the director of and has been for 10 years....0 years is clearly not enough to become good at your job.

Despite the inevitable bugs, thanks to sheer scale and ambition, you and I both know that Starfield will not launch in a state like....this.
