Phil Spencer - what’s he actually done?

Phil hires the Matt Booty

Phil lets the Matt Booty flounder

So ultimately, Phil is at fault. He needs to recognize quickly when something is not working. Booty has been there way too long
Boot the Booty!... And Phil while you're at it. Just don't hire a new responsible in charge guy with the name Phil... Phil Spencer, Phil Harrison. There is a pattern here.

Angry Jim Henson GIF by Muppet Wiki

Game pass, 2 consoles, Bethesda, built studios (no games) . Phil literally saved Xbox. Phile deserves to stay at Xbox ,the problem lies with Matt Booty and everyone else who is under Phil
Who is the responsible person in the company for the people who are under Phil? Let me think here for a sec.... Phiiiiiiiiiiil maybe? He allowed and allows all this crap going on and it's his job responsibility to lead and manage but he's doing neither. And he's also not fixing the issues, or replacing the culprits that are his responsibilities, just playing Vampire Survivors and that's about it.

At this point I'm 50/50 on him being a double agent sent in to sabotage Xbox from the inside, like Phil Harrison was.

bought alot of studios

but hasnt delivered anything new or exciting in terms of game, any game that has been good were existing franchises like Forza Horizon that are on auto pilot

very disappointing

In any serious company Phil Spencer (Matt Booty and Aaron Greenberg) would have been fired years ago, they have had 10 YEARS to raise the mark, they have spent billions and the result is sales below Xbox one (30% less this last quarter while your rival PS5 breaks a historical record), droughts of more than a year without AAA games (they released the console with nothing), delays, and on top of that they come out as this RedFAIL has come out... the most amazing thing is the people who He still defends it and that may be one of the reasons why the brand is like this.

I have been asked a few times about Starfield especially after this disaster of a launch so I asked if there was positive news recently on Starfield with how todays launch went and I will share here the text I got back

People didn't believe you about Redfall but you've been redeemed yet again with that insider knowledge...

Sounds like Starfield needs delaying until 2024.

I see no redeeming qualities in Xbox anymore. Whether it's their global strategy, their day-to-day management and their always deceitful communication, hate everything about them.

That doesn't have much to do with Redfall though. The real worst part is that they managed to release 2 XGS exclusive games since the launch of the consoles, one being very questionable (Halo). 2 games. And they have only one for this year, again Forza. Baffling.

Ah - I forgot to add that under his watch XGS games are releasing on Steam, so now you don’t have to be locked in to Xbox. That’s probably the best part of his legacy, my laptop can play MCC/SoT etc no problems, less hardware and less clutter.

He did good reversing everything don did but now he needs to go, we had infinte in a shitty state because it was released and rumours afew months ago stated redfall should of been releasing next year, now its out bugged to the high heavens, ms approach seems to be fuck it its on gamepass and can be patched at a later point, definitely jumping on playstation next console because this shit is going to go on forever now, forza is already going to be the next bugged ms game since they wanted to launch in 2024

Just the trend of Xbox releases says someone(s) over there is putting their fingers into things they know nothing about. All their heavily marketed games have issues, seemed unfinished with questionable design choices. Then you have a game like Hi Fi Rush, no marketing at all, shadow dropped, gets highly praised by the industry and gamers.

I’d say MS really needs someone to oversee the projects that knows what they are doing. PlayStation has people like Shuhei Yoshida. Nintendo has many people who are studying under the GOAT Miyamoto.

I mean he did a few things
- removed Kinect.
- got Xbox to allow cross play.
- reidroduced backwards compatibility.
- introduced same day releases on PC and Xbox.
- gamepass.
- adaptive controller.
- published games on Nintendo.

xbox had a mere 5 studios to acquiring:
- Mojang
-Ninja Theory
-Undead Lab
- Compulsion Games
- Playground Games
- Inxile Entertainment
- Obsidian Entertainment
- Double Fine Productions
- Bethesda/zeimax and all the studios.

yea looks like a big Activision blunder, dude is cringy/annoying AF and doesn't stfu and there is a bad game scheduling issue but downplaying dude is kinda humourous.

I agree.......I just wish that list included kick ass games. Well.....I guess racing fans are happy, but other than that....

There is a disconnect between what he has done for the business and what he has done for us here.

As a business he has increased gamepass subs, and he continues to increase gamepass subs. That's all they care about because that's their moneymaker and business model.

For years people have said this business model will lower quality because people care less about quality when they don't have to buy the games. People like myself have said that they can stretch out release dates for big AAA games and make more money because you are paying that sub regardless so it's like they are getting that $1B per quarter AAA money without a big release. Just hype the shit out of some smaller lower budget game or N64 port and people will remain subbed to try it. They lose nothing from those complaining about the lack of timely high quality AAA releases because the complaining doesn't really affect the gamepass business which is still doing well for Phil and co.

Lack of identity is what makes Xbox getting weaker nowadays. During Xbox 360 generation Xbox always considered the dudebro/shooter/sports console, always focused on gamers with amazing games. Then Sony took inspiration from this when selling the PS4. Xbox One marketed as entertainment box, this gen Xbox shifted its focus to subscription models, studio acquisitions. Phil has done things but some is not the right one.

Phil needs to be replaced, that much is for sure. He should be commended for turning the Xbox One around but he has outlived his usefulness.
I'd love to know what this means. Xbox One stumbled out of the gates and never really recovered. Phil undertook a lot of initiatives, greenlit a lot of games, and made a lot of big promises, but they never came within spitting distance of the competition; Nintendo, who launched four years later, have practically lapped them with the Switch.

Contrast that with the PS3, which didn't so much stumble out the blocks as flop like a three-week-old corpse. By the end of the generation, it had managed to outsell the 360 globally and came within about 15 million units of the juggernaut success of the Wii. Speaking of the Wii - the Wii U, which was probably one of the biggest flops of any major platform holder in history, was followed up with the Switch, one of the most successful consoles in recent history. The PS3 is a great product turnaround, the Switch is a great brand turnaround - ten years under Phil can't really claim either.

- Mattrick or anyone else would have removed Kinect eventually, that's not anything exemplary.
- Same day releases don't benefit Xbox players, don't know why that matters.
- Publishing games on Nintendo doesn't help Xbox players either.

The only thing on that list that brought more games to his userbase was backwards compatibility. That was an Ace move!

How can anyone propose such a question in the wake RedFalls release? Sorry, dont have time to think about an answer as I'm too busy stabbing a few awkward looking enemies with a stake. My mind is occupied with the silky smooth gameplay and responsiveness of this 30 fps title. My energy is better spent wandering a beautifully realized world with graphics that could be compared to the great 1998 film Antz.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
You know why you're buying a PlayStation. You're buying it for Horizon, God of War, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Spider-Man, The Last of Us, Gran Turismo. PlayStation has a very clear identity, and within just two years after the console's release, all of its staple franchises are on the system with a new installment. Sony is very good at acquiring studios, helping them grow, and assisting them in producing tentpole franchises in a way that Microsoft is not, and that hasn't changed under Phil Spencer.

The only first party game that the Xbox Series X launched with was a port of a PC title with Gears of War Tactics.

I'm sorry, that's such a skewed comparison. You're including almost entirely some cross-gen games as reasons to buy a PS, while ignoring to do the same for Xbox and just mentioning one?

In terms of pure next-gen exclusives they're both not too distant from each other, with Redfall (yes you may laugh) and Starfield, that gap's getting even narrower.

Secondly, there's something to be said about sequalitis.

And finally, the best reviewed game between the two brands this year, so far, is a new IP from Xbox.

I actually do think he has done a lot at Xbox since taking over.....but when it comes to GAMES......where are Xbox when it comes to GOTY discussions, they are never in the running. They have not put out a single fucking game since he took over that made me want to get an Xbox to play it.....not one....and I like video games.

Weird to me that this site is made up of a ton of PC gamers and yet almost no one mentions that he put all first party games day 1 on PC…. And at 9.99 a month for all of them if you want that.

Name something even close that PS has done for the PC audience.

Phil Spencer, in my opinion, seems to be slowly but surely killing the Xbox brand in my opinion. He seems to have done NOTHING for Xbox as far as I can tell. We are still without exclusives and those that are released are disappointing (The Medium, Halo Infinite and now Redfall). I would be surprised if Microsoft abandoned the Xbox hardware in the near future to focus on GamePass as a service across multiple platforms.

I cannot fault the hardware, the Xbox Series X is a stunning piece of kit, but over 2.5 years after launch it still has no killer app games to show for it and seems to be on life-suppport. And by life-support I mean GamePass which seems to be the only thing Microsoft care about. The company has fallen a long way since the awesome original Xbox in my opinion, which ties as my favourite console to date along with the Dreamcast, and the brand has never really recovered since the disastrous unveiling of the TV! TV! TV! Xbox One.

---You just made some big decisions. You delayed some big games that were supposed to come out for the holiday, Starfield and Redfall. Those would have been the hits. Talk through making that decision to delay the hits. Then I want to talk about this shift in the industry from being an “all hits all the time” model to this more recurring-revenue subscription model.
Phil: For any game, but definitely for our games Starfield and Redfall — which are our first big Xbox games with ZeniMax coming into the team — I just wanted to make sure those teams felt they had all the support they could get from Xbox, and to maybe feel some of the benefit of being part of a larger organization that has other revenue streams and other helpful things going on. In the end, I believe the quality of the games will be better and customers will find the experience to be more interesting, which will hopefully feel like the right decision in hindsight.

Given that he was responsible for first-party studios at the time, you could blame him for not having any groundbreaking games to show off Kinect.

What does it matter if the games are cross gen or not? I've made no distinction between cross gen or current gen only.

What major franchises or games have I not included here? The only big franchises MS have released for Xbox thus far are Halo and Forza.
