I mean, this is popular because it’s Spider-Man. The most popular comic book character of all time. It’s not because Spider-Man 2018 was the greatest video game of all time.
If anything this proves that mindshare can be piggybacked.

Unfortunately, this is just confirmation of how out of touch or how much of an outlier we here on GAF are becoming.
Once upon a time, pubs and devs would have looked to forums like GAF/Era to get a pulse of the industry, but think now we couldn't be further away from what the mass market has become. We are now these people that more often than not... should just be ignored.
If you've been on the forum in say the last 12 hours, you would think this game was going to be some sort of flop and is underwhelming.

Well, it's Spider-Man, the first two games were decent and it looks good... so that number isn't surprising at all.

Totk took that crown already. 10m sales in 3 days is a huge obstacle to overcome.
I said one of the biggest. Many games have already done super well this year including Hogwarts, Zelda, RE4, Star Wars.

They loved this trailer. They loved the whole showcase
you make it sound like every view equals a endorsement of its quality or something. People will watch anything spiderman related in the same way people will watch anything cats related.

I think Spider-Man can take that crown. Super super popular franchise that even attracts non gamers + Sony's all in marketing. And if there is a movie around the release date, it will sell like hot cakes.

Spiderman is great no doubt about that, but it has super competition during that month with starfield.
There is also the fact that it took 3 months for Ragnorak to sell 11m copies.
Nintendo doesn't have that much competition with their system, which allows their first party games to do that much sales in quick period of time.

God of War is just a 18+ game, Spider-Man is a larger than life franchise. The only problem is that there are much more Switch than PS5, so i guess you may be right.

Not really gonna get into this, as this just proves my point. But take note of this, this is not the first Spiderman game ever made. The first series of games, never sold anywhere near as much for the IP to be taken seriously.
Insomniacs Spiderman has sold 33M copies as of MAY 2022. And people like you on GAF want to attribute this to it just being a popular IP lol.... ok.. let's just keep pretending Activision didn't make a couple of Spiderman games back in 2000 and beyond.

Do you realize that SM2 is exclusive to PS5 and Starfeild is Exclusive to Xbox, PC, and most importantly... gamepass?
And that Ragnarok comment... stuff like that just shows your hand lol.... yes you are right, it took Ragnarok 3 months to sell 11M copies.... do you want me to tell you how long it took GOW2018 to sell 10M copies?

People have both consoles these days.
And those who have both pc and PS5 will have to choose that either game to put their time in.
Though it won't eat a lot of numbers. It will make it harder for it to achieve those numbers at a faster rate.

Of course Spiderman (2018) sold well because it was well made. I would also add thats why most of the previous spidermans didnt. For once it actually had a full AAA budget and was showcased front and center at major events by sony.
The shear fidelity of the 2018 game also drew alot of people who had previously disregarded spiderman games as "mostly" being shovelware to tie in with a recent movie release.
Or you can look at from a different angle and say that they dont want to spend time conversating with people who are only interested in ignoring any shortcomings and turning every conversation into an opportunity to generate hype.
It's like people forget corporations by there nature are inherently anti consumer.

And you are not the first poster in this thread alone that has basically said... its Spiderman....
And I don't know about you, but if the IP has sold over 33M copies, I would like to think its easier to assume that people are watching because they like it or are interested in the game, as opposed to.... hey, cats and spiderman generate views.

Fair point, that is a viable point of view. But you can also look at it from different point of view. For example, a weary office worker, working 9 to 5, get back home, want to relax, enjoy video games, watching youtube event from Sony Showcase and just taking it as an entertainment, shutting down the nitpicking, over critical brain and just have fun. Personally, I am glad we have Spiderman games with such quality and fun. A pixel here and there, maybe blur on some scenes and glitch on another, maybe because this is still unreleased product, in my mind. These kinds of people do exist.
Yes, corporation by nature driven by greed and exploiting the consumer, you can say that to almost, if not all, corporation in the world. But it doesn't mean you can not enjoy their product every now and then.
But I digress. GAF, and most enthusiast forums and communities are minority. A small and maybe almost insignificant piece of the market share. Most likely, Spiderman 2, as the trailer view shows, will be in millions of sales number.
I read your orginal post to suggest that the number of views equaled favor and I was trying to say it only indicates interest. Which clearly even gaf shares.
This game will do well reguardless of how next gen it is because its a high profile sequal to a very well reguarded game at a time when spiderman couldnt be more in the spotlight.
I'm just saying views dont equal approval. Peoples responses do. So far it looks like most people elsewhere either dont care about its visuals or are watching on a small screen and havent played spiderman in a while to reliably compare the 2. Either way there definitly seems to be a whole lot who indeed liked what they saw.
Im sure it will sell well. Im used to the majority of gamers not caring about lot of things I do.
I liked the first one so I will probably get it on sale some day.

No but it was the greatest Spider-Man of all time. I single handedly brought the games back into popularity which Activision could not do.

If anything, this showcase just proved so many right who call us entitled man babies, granted not for the "racist" and "phobe" reasons they say. You have people in here whining about the showcase, which had a lot of games people wanted announced actually announced, while the actual thing has a nearly 90:10 like to dislike ratio among the gaming audience at large. People calling the Spider-Man 2 gameplay reveal disappointing, boring, ugly, yet both vids have 98:2 like to dislike ratio.
Personally, I'm glad I haven't become so cynical, or bitter, or entitled, or whatever makes people react to a pretty good showing as if it was complete crap. I do look forward to the usual suspects acting like the Xbox show in June will be God's gift to man, though.

It’s gonna be one of the biggest games of the year and sell a record number of PS5s. Don’t listen to the out of touch people here on GAF. I still remember when people here thought the first Spiderman was gonna bomb before it launched in 2018. The community here doesn’t represent the gaming community at large.
