Microsoft is increasing the price of Xbox Series X and Xbox Game Pass

People who have been warning us for years that MS was set to raise prices to $25 still manage to lose their shit on a $2 price increase.

It does seem odd (read: poor timing) they’re doing this before any heavy hitters land, and right after Redfall, but it’s not exactly the end of the world.

Phil: “we don’t plan to raise xbox prices at this point. We don’t think it’s the right thing to do now, but we’ll continue to evaluate this decision”

* Raises prices 8 months later *

Gamers: “Liar! You promised you would NEVER raise console prices”

I'm not surprised. It was only a matter of time. Now that they actually have some big games on the horizon, they won't pay for themselves.

That said, it’s really weird they’re increasing costs for a console that’s currently struggling in the market, and you typically don’t see the prices of consumer electronics go up post release.

It certainly was a strategy that failed for Meta with the Quest 2. Worked for Sony since the PS5 is crazy popular and considered great value…but i doubt the xbox brand is that well perceived.

They should have just eaten the cost, and keeping the US price intact while raising it everywhere else is a cynical move.

Sometimes MS makes boneheaded decisions. GP price increase can be logically explained. Console price for a struggling console? not so much

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
So Series X and PS5 now both cost nearly $800 in Canada.

But so many people told me Microsoft was the "good guy" and cares about the consumer?

In 2 days its revealed they want to eliminate Sony and then raise prices.

Fools. None of these companies gives a fuck about gamers :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Its why you should all be harder on them, like me, and only praise games when they push boundaries.

If you raise your price. Then the quality of your games needs to raise as well.

Game looks and plays like last gen trash? Bash it to hell on Twitter. And don't buy it.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Guess being cheaper than PS5 wasn’t doing much so might as well.

But the time frame is suspicious and lends credence to conspiracy theories that MS was waiting on the ABK merger and the showcase to do it. CMA threw a wrench on that plan? Maybe.

Then why would they do it on the eve of the FTC case ?

The thoughts of that women taking over is a nightmare already.
Rip to Xbox bros if that happens. #women power will the motto for Xbox.
Mate, just stop. You are an embarrassment if you truly think like that, whinging more about hypotheticals then the actual snowflakes. It's still a corporation, the mindsets won't suddenly shift just because a female is in power.

Some Chicken Little thinking there, but really this whole thread is Chicken Little "oh god they'll totally dominate with their current third place position just you wait!!"

You KNOW MS are expecting Starfield to sell ganbusters and be the reason consoles fly off the shelves this holiday season, they're literally just being greedy in hopes Starfield makes them a shit ton of money. And idiots with money will not care and continue to support their shitty practices.

What is this Twitter tier analysis lol. Every company operates at 100% greed all the time, whether in 2023 or 1923. Greed explains absolutely nothing because it's a constant. Change in prices are a result of changing market conditions. Production costs have probably gone up, thereby reducing the margins. Management probably thinks the market in Europe can bear a higher price, so they charge more.

Non issue, everything else is going up here in the UK, why not MS.

At least it’s only £2 I just won’t buy a bottle of juice or I won’t get myself a packet of miso soup sachets 🤷‍♂️ (6 for £3)

Like I mean, we spend more than £2 on shite every day 😂 what’s an extra £2 on top of what you were already paying at the end of the month.

Because they never gave a shit about the FTC and aren’t going to start now? Maybe they are trying to be cute and go to court saying “We aren’t going to raise the prices because we already did so! Gotcha!”? Maybe they simply can’t wait any longer because according to Phil Spencer the “stock situation” is resolved *wink wink* and they lose a lot of money on each unit?

Certainly their original plan wasn’t to raise the price on console and GP before walking on that showcase stage where they were planning to announced ABK joining the Xbox family.

What do you think?

I think you're overthinking it lol, they told us roughly 8, 9 months ago to expect price increases. It was due and now is the time.

Why are console and subscription prices going up? That’s an issue and unfortunately people will have to pay it.

Game Pass PC - no increase.

It’s almost as though Microsoft know they can’t rip people of on an open platform with rival store fronts, but know the people forced in to their walled garden can be exploited.

GP growth on console has stalled so they are ready to start bleeding people. That’s how subs work. They stopped the 1$ trial didn’t they? Now they raise the price.

If they get ABK you can expect GP to become a 19.99$ a month sub in five years time.

Don’t game on consoles.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
I saw plenty of “it’s about time” and games have been $60 for too long, prices had to go up”, “I can afford an extra $10”….yeah, there was loads of acceptance going on.
And I'm pretty sure you saw plenty of ppl that didn't accept it, or were not happy.

I mean....it's all there in black in white in the threads.

We told them to fk off with their windows store.
They know they cant increase the price, they have no leverage there.

Damn someone from another thread was right Microsoft was losing too much money on Series X and artificially slow production until they got close to break even now that they've ramped up production again they've hiked the price. Sorry I couldn't give credit to that user since i forgot who it was but know that you're a scholar.

I forgot the controllers increased in price earlier in the week :messenger_tears_of_joy: so games, accessories, subscriptions and hardware all going up.

This fucking sucks. They fleeced me on the starfield controller and headset...I'm going to be reemed on the starfield console...and then I get shafted on gamepass in 2025....

Also, I went to tescos and a bottle of hp sauce was £4.50...how the fuck does that happen...world's in the shitter

Because we are constantly being told that Xbox is the consumer friendly platform and evil Sony is the one who raises prices .
Then Xbox goes and raises the prices across the board.

Here you are happy to pay more it's only 2£ more.. then what about next year when they raise it again and again.

Get people hooked on subscriptions then crank it up. We've seen clowns on this website say they'd be happy to pay 20/25 a month.

What a joke with release like redfall and nothing.

This comment is confusing.. Higher production usually leads to lower per unit costs.. Seems quite the opposite, they increase the price and slow production.. Or did I just read this wrong?

Yeah. Struggling. Whether it’s a demand or supply issue, it’s clear that the flagship Series X is being significantly outsold by the competition, including the Switch. Series S sales have slowed too.

Raising prices is not the move I’d have recommended they made. But we’ll see.
And it’s so far better than any previous Xbox generation in sales and revenue. Makes profit. Has 7 first party games this year, has a widely popular and profitable subscription service and has more active players than it ever has.

It would be like saying Sony is struggling because Switch is crushing them both.

Makes me more inclined to skip out on Gamepass after my current paid-up period expires. I'll just buy the MP titles I like (AOE2, especially), first party titles that hit hard (Skyrim) and use the savings to get PS+ Extra.

From the thread where Eddie Griffin was pretending that MS has a "production issue" with the Series X:
They are just increasing margins by
a) supplying it themselves. You can order from Xbox directly and supply is not limited.
b) shipping a bundle with an over a year old game to retailers at +$60.

Supply is there but the profit is not to ship everywhere. Once they lose less per console they will start pumping them out to retailers.

They have a set price. Higher production usually leads to lower prices but the volume orders that set the initial price are at the beginning of the gen and volumes actually decrease as the gen goes on. Especially for the X. They would be doing lower volume contracts now if they were rebargaining than they were during the beginning of the gen. They were limiting supply so that they take lower losses because it's a loss leading product and pushing the S instead. Once they hike the price they improve margins and are happy to sell more.

There’s a Phil quote for everything.

Speaking to CNBC 8 months ago:

“And I can definitely say we have no plans today to raise the price of our consoles,” Spencer continued. We think in a time when our customers are more economically challenged and uncertain than ever, we don’t think it’s the right move for us at this point to be raising prices on our console.”

Nice to know the economic crisis has all blown over in the UK.
