Meta launches Instagram-linked Twitter replacement “Threads” tomorrow

Top tier content so far.
she has more problems to worry about such as FLBP

It's lacking some key features that I kind of missed from Twitter, but this is by far and away the best alternative put forward since Twitter's decline.

If they follow through on the promises of having their own trending page, search functions improved, and some UI changes I think this is possibly going to be a nail in Twitter's coffin. Not the final one, but definitely one of them.

Never liked Twitter so I should’ve guessed I wouldn’t like Threads. Tried it then deleted it shortly after.

If you want, PM me and I can send you a Bluesky invite. It's way better.

It will never have the funding or man power to grow like Threads is, but I assure it is like 1000 times better.

Sure, let's give the granddaddy of aggressive personal data harvesting another entry on your mobile phone, lmao.

As a healthcare IT worker who has to undergo many hours of training and certifications a year to insure I am not breaking the law and know how to not break the law, from what I have seen Threads is already not something anyone should engage with. They seem to be reading metadata regarding protected health info and that is illegal as fuck in the US. Talking jail time illegal.

Edit: I cannot see everything that ends up on their end after things are filtered, obviously, but I am not taking my chances

Edit 2: looks like it wasn't reading that deep of data as I thought

Isn't Facebook's whole MO "go fast and break things"? I'm sure Theranos was inspired.

Apparently it wasn’t meant to launch this week. But then Elmo did the rate limiting stuff on Twitter and Zuckerbot saw blood in the water so they pushed it out. The devs have been saying the stuff people have been asking for are being worked on.

Apparently, Threads and Mastodon are going to join up like Voltron, so there will be a crossover of nerds talking about the latest innovations in Linux kernels and professional thirst traps talking about suffering for fashion.

I think Facebook is finished, and no new idea can save it
I'd love to see all of Facebook fuck off but it's not going anywhere. People actually still use Facebook and WhatsApp feels like it's too big to fail. I think Instagram has been struggling and maybe this Threads shit will keep it relevant.

Facebook has been "finished" for a long time now, which is why Instagram exists.
I think they have reached their top and there is much better stuff out there, sure it will not die overnight, but it will go the way of yahoo

Not great yet, but a lot of people are already signing up so...if they can fix the bugs and add missing features relatively soon, they'll just win the game by default.

To this day i don't know how to use twitter. I never cared enough about Twitter to find out either. Maybe the new thing is better in usability and readability.

I... don't see how this any different to Instagram.

It even has a similar shitty app that doesn't scale, just like Instagram. It's just like they repurposed the Instagram app and named it something different...

This thing apparently won't let me sign up for it. I've tried "sign in with Google", I've tried logging in through email, and it just keeps giving me an "unknown error has occurred" message.

Want to Delete Your Threads Profile? Then Delete Your Instagram Account, Says Meta.

Wow, that sucks.

Also, it seems the meta "misinformation" ministry of truth is already at it on threads. I just saw some reporting that trying to follow certain individuals results in "are you sure you want to follow this bad harmful person?" type hall monitor BS.

Bottom line, all of these platforms are failing us in some way or another right now. If Jack is successful in learning from his mistakes, I'll be glad to join his latest effort.

Not bad so far for a first day, but I do want a following only tab. Maybe they don't want to do that though so that it's always an algorithmic dopamine feed.

To be fair, Threads is just Instagram with a different coat of paint on it, and but even that different at that.

The datasets used are pretty much all the damn same.

So if you've already sold your soul to Meta, then it doesn't make much difference.

I've been getting some questions about deleting your account. To clarify, you can deactivate your Threads account, which hides your Threads profile and content, you can set your profile to private, and you can delete individual threads posts – all without deleting your Instagram account. Threads is powered by Instagram, so right now it's just one account, but we're looking into a way to delete your Threads account separately.

We couldn’t be happier with all the excitement about this app, so thank you thank you, but this is a race to the starting line if there ever was one.

The real test is not if we can build up a lot of hype, but if you all find enough value in the app to keep using it over time. And there are tons of basics that are missing: search, hashtags, a following feed, graph syncing, fedeverse support, messaging maybe…

We’re on it. The (amazing) team is cranking away. But full disclosure, it’ll take time.

20m is crazy for a first day. It sounds like Zuck is actually listening to users and plans on developing the barebones features people expected.

You know who reacts:

Their continued revenue and user growth says otherwise.

Across their portfolio of social media/communication apps they have something that caters to every type of user along with every demographic out there.

Don't let the hate (which is warranted in many cases) blind you from the actual numbers under the hood.

I don’t want any of my IRL friends to know my Twitter handle so using my insta handle on Threads is a no go. Maybe if I can have separate accounts with a burner email…

I don't hate Facebook, I only think that it will lose to the new stuff out there like yahoo lost to google

They arent just Facebook anymore.

Like I said, they are diverse enough in that even if Facebook went the way of the dodo they would still have enough growth vectors elsewhere to sustain the current size of their business.

You're also grossly underestimating the amount that Facebook is used outside of Western countries. In some countries it's one of the primary tools they use for communication (India, Indonesia and the Philippines for example).
