They don't show early trailers anymore, but better than showing games too early.
Games have lesser variety/quantity but that's sorta across the board in the gaming space.
PS+ being middling. but PS+ being mandatory happened during the PS4
Studio closures have been happeneing ever since the PS3 generation.
Stuff like evolution and studio liverpool were bigger losses than japan studios.

If you look at the actual hardware AND software released
playstation's output is really high quality.
PS5, Dualsense, PSVR2 are all fantastic hardware.
PS studios have been releasing constant bangers.
the quality of first party software is amongst the best sony has ever been
they are arguably the best collection of studios amongst any publisher.
The PS5 lineup so far is better than the PS4 was during it's early years.

Himbo has made Playstation has become more streamlined, it's been an ongoing transition since the late PS3 era.
it's stepping away from what they were bad at and doubled down at what they are good at.
People actually believe that they haven't been successful under jim because there hasn't been a new locoroco.

Other than Kutaragi, I honestly don't know who would be my choice... I liked Kaz Hirai, but disliked all other top sony people. Yoshida is awesome too, but he probably isn't the man for this.
Kutaragi's years were something else, including PS3.

Mark Cerny is the only man at Sony right now I actually have a huge respect for. I would give him the job, but system architect is already a perfect fit.

"We at Sony, after a certain period of deliberation have decided to not appoint an interim CEO and simply have hired a skilled and knowledge person to take Playstation to higher highs then before. We therefore formally announce that Don Mattrick will now be Playstation's CEO"

I get the feeling that this is a "Forced" Retirement. None of Sony's GAAS are evenly remotely ready and some has been canceled. (Deveation Games, supposedly Factions etc) which would leave a lineup whole because of their divided attention in making Single player and multiplayer games.

Jim Ryan is only 53! Abit early for "Retirement"

It's actually pretty wild to see Jim Ryan go, he's been there from the beginning. Tons of questionable decisions under his watch, but at the same time he made the PS5 a huge powerhouse during a crazy pandemic time, and helped deliver a good lineup of titles during this time. 2019-2022 were great years.
Goodbye, Jim. I hope you enjoy your time with your kittens.
As a side note, I want the next CEO to scale back some of their content strategies, particularly the GAAS stuff, and realize that they don't really need more than 2 or 3 hit games. Then, my personal dreams are another dedicated handheld and a new Japanese division focused on VR gaming, following in the footsteps of previous first-party efforts like Astro Bot Rescue Mission, but I'm not really expecting any of that. :messenger_pensive:

Didn't they start the GAAS thing like 2 years ago why would any of them be ready?

Early retirement is very common among people who can afford it. I did it myself (albeit at 57).

I doubt he'll go full retirement, though. I expect he will pick up some consulting gigs on the side. He won't just sit around on a beach all day.

This seems very sudden and out of nowhere. I’m wondering if he was sort of forced out? Wasn’t there restructuring of management or something like that for Sony as well? If Sony of Japan is getting involved, maybe they didn’t like the direction PlayStation was heading and wanted more presence in the Japanese market or something.

I could imagine what Jim was making at PS simply because at one time I knew what Phil Spencer and Ybarra made while at Xbox and it would be easier to retire in his 50s

Good for him if this wasn’t forced and enjoy life and congrats on being able to retire early yourself

Have been retired myself for 23 years now

Probably not that. Could be that he had a deal on the table for all Activision games for 10 years on PlayStation, which Nintendo took but Jim kept rejecting. The deal he ended up signing was just for COD while Nintendo will continue to get all Activision games as they’re launching the new Switch. He bluffed, lost, and Sony Corp probably didn’t look favorably on it.

That's a silly theory, based only on your feelings.

While that's true, CEOs stepping down before the company has found a replacement is quite rare in corporate Japan. If there's one thing Japanese companies hate, it's uncertainty.

I think that's what gives credence to the notion that this wasn't necessarily pre-planned. I mean hey it could even be something health-related that he would rather keep private and therefore the company says "early retirement" (which is fine of course).

JR has never had a bigger smile on his face than when he read this headline. :messenger_beaming:

I'm sure he is retiring very well, certainly made a lot of profitable decisions for the brand.

Nice. I'm about 4 years into retirement now myself. I love it. Such freedom. Even though I liked my job and the people I worked with, there's no way I'd go back.

Being a corporate manager is probably a stressful gig. Just looking at Jim Ryan, I wouldn't think he is 53. He looks like he's in his early 60s. So yeah, I'd be looking forward to just taking it easy for a while, if I were him. He mentioned something about the tension between living on one continent and working in another. I'm sure that adds to the stress.

They offered 3, he rejected it, then they offered 10 (which was ALL Activision games not just COD and what Nintendo accepted), but he still rejected it. Then when the FTC lost he signed a 10 year deal that was just for COD.

I don't think corporate would care about the crash bandicoot money so much they'd axe him he secured the the COD bag and began setting them up with a shot at alternative revenue after COD leaves no one is getting the boot for crash.

Is it? Well, he gave them 6 months, so that seems like enough time to find a replacement. They have an interim guy appointed, so it's covered. It would be different if he gave two-weeks notice, lol.

Anyhow, people are welcome to speculate all they like about fatal illnesses or behind-the-scenes skullduggery, but there's zero evidence for any of that. I think the story makes good sense on the face of it, and I don't feel the need to speculate about what else it might be.

Oops didn't see that part. In that case yeah perhaps they simply haven't found anyone suitable yet.

But GAF told me that Sony would never get rid of him and that it is Phil who would be fired from Xbox, I'm confused now!

Jim Ryan is not 53. Can't find his actual birthdate but he got his master's degree in 1982. He would have been 14 at the time if was 53 now. Jim Ryan is in his 60s.

Not true. The original deal was 3 years for all Activision games. The 10 year deal only ever included COD games.

People seem to love this guy, but I always thought he was an NPC.

I wouldn't say people loved him, per se. I think there's sort of a cult of personality around these gaming executives, so all of the Jim gifs and idolatry are just an extension of the usual tribal console warrior nonsense. We see the same thing with Phil Spencer, and in the past with Kaz Hirai, Mattrick, "Crazy Ken", Iwata, etc.

When you're the face of a huge company like SIE, I think it's best not to impart too much personality. He comes across as a mild-mannered and competent custodian, so on the one hand I can see why some people might see him as a bit beige and dull, on the other, I can appreciate that kind of approach. Some CEOs run their mouths about everything, and the boards/shareholders they're beholden to typically don't care much for that.

Agreed. Shawn Layden's departure was much more abrupt, but I don't recall there being quite as much reckless speculation as to the specifics of that back then. As it transpires, he was simply burned out with the industry.

The problem with Jim is that he hasn't done anything with his time as CEO
He was handed the wheel with a launch road map & multiple games in production and since then all he done is bought a few studios to port those games to PC.
Now don't get me wrong, I wish for the new CEO to continue doing that but put the focus back on Playstation 5 because Jim wasn't
Probably not that. Could be that he had a deal on the table for all Activision games for 10 years on PlayStation, which Nintendo took but Jim kept rejecting. The deal was they would honour the existing contract that ended in 2024
they then offered all existing Activision console titles to release in Playstation, including future versions in the Call of Duty franchise or any other current Activision franchise on Playstation through December 31st, 2027
The New deal is 10 Years starting now and won't end until 2033.
Everyone painted as if Sony walked away with worse deal and it was win for MS.
it couldn't be further from the truth, Jim walked away with a big smile on his face.
