Insomniac on the release of Spider-Man 2: The disc contains the entire game and is playable from start to finish with no patch or online requirement

Other devs gonna be big mad over this.
I want to push back against players taking that excitement out and using it to apply criticism or a “raised standard” to games going forward.

This is not a new baseline for games - it is an anomaly. Trying to reach the bar of a finished game being finished could kill an entire group of studios.

I don't even understand why this a big deal. The internet is as necessary as electricity now days. There are about 25+ devices in my house that require internet connectivity. It is what is. It still says for the best experience you will need to download a patch and I'm sure that will be the case for future patches.

Because not everyone is you. It's not that difficult.

Said every lazy person. Do you also have a pee jug? Can't get up? I'm going to invent the gamer themed auto-feeder so gamers don't even need to think about eating, food just happens to fall in your mouth when needed.
Popping them on my Christmas wishlist. Cheers for the heads up!

I'll let you get back to hunting, gathering and painting your sister on the cave wall

It's sad that we've got to a place where a developer needs to even state this is the case with their game.

This is how it should always be.
Yes but sadly it's flexing now.
Yeah, 1 bug over 20 hours of gameplay. A dead enemy T posing straight to heaven. Must have been an innocent killed by Spidey.

I dunno if it’s a bug as well but he did also show one instance of a road texture having seams. Probably where 2 textures were supposed to connect. I guess that’s 2 if you count it as well.
Yes they found 1 bug and they had to show it for like 20 sec. How many bugs did they find on Starfield, how many of them have they shown?

What if I told you a lot of people barely have 10 devices in their homes, and they're all subject to the same download cap with very low bandwidth bandwidth.

You're helping data brokers buy their second mansions, god bless!

IDK but it's a pretty big deal when there's a ton of pushback from publishers and even from ordinary people who just want to take options from those of us who still prefer their games on physical media.

I guess that with the PS4, the only game was Persona 5 that was playable from get go. Xbox One games were all this bullshit

But Nintendo games are playable from the get go too, you know? Just saying

There are copies out in the wild and they want the consumer to wait on the Day 1 patch to get the best possibly quality and somehow folks have already twisted what they're announcing. Never change GAF.

I mean it's not a competition and Nintendo should be celebrated as well as they put complete games on cart. But when you see this kind of shit from some of these scummy 3rd party publishers it needs to be called out, and this is just the most recent example.

Plus this applies to most games. You can play a majority of games from the disc with no internet and the patches they release are all optional 🤷‍♂️

That's pretty cool, I remember when that used to be the standard. Not sure why this stopped being a thing.
Simply because games are not made of one hundred lines of code anymore, and by ten people.

Complexity now is enormous, and the number of unpredictable variables is impossible to fathom in advance.

Did anyone read this announcement? It does not match thread title.

"But for the best experience, we highly encourage physical/disc based players to download patch blah blah blah"

How is this different to any game that has been released in last 10 years?

Don't see how there's anything misleading with my OP -- The day one version of SM2 is complete on the disc, and Insomniac even made additional improvements since the game went gold (e.g the build that's printed on the disc), and you can get those if your Internet connection allows. If not, you've still got the full, finished game on the disc that plays just fine from start to finish. That said, there will always be optional day 1 patches for such big releases since devs continue working on games post launch, like it was the case with FFXVI which was complete on disc too.

And yes, there have been 2 big releases this year with Hogwarts Legacy and Jedi Survivor that require mandatory download to play past the intro/tutorial area.

Insomniac this generation have been insane, it's like they have a checklist on how to school other devs and just constantly hit their target, this is what a properly run studio gets you and they're not even finished yet!

As it should always be. Its good to know, but Insomniac is guilty of not shipping all the content on disk in the past. For example the Spider-Man GOTY Edition for PS4 only came with the main game on the disk and a DLC code to download the DLC expansions the game got.

DLC is called DLC for a reason
Most physical GOTY edition i buy come with all DLC or expansions on the disk. Whats the point of launching a physical GOTY edition, if the content on disk is the same as the normal and cheaper normal editon?

Polyphony did a re-release of GT Sport after some updates and they included 1 extra blu-ray to include all the extra content that was added to the game.

Insomniac doing it and doing it well. Should be the norm across the board.

Interesting thought experiment. If MS had of bought them would they still be releasing games in a finished state on time?

This is what going gold would mean. It had a purpose, but for years that purpose felt like it was missing. Good to see a dev try and get it back to the way it was. Good on them.

It really is sad that we're praising this these days. Or that games even work well, at all. Never should've been an issue or concern that we'd have to worry about.

That... makes perfect sense.

didn't the guy from digital foundry found a big where a dead body floated? there will be patches of of coarse
Unless the bugs make the game crash or a bug breaks the logic in some way that makes the game impossible to complete without an unobvious work around, non-glaring class C or lower bugs wouldn't be considered critical to push back a release.

Playable from start to finish on disc but not the way they intended it to be played...

I bought the digital deluxe version so doesn't impact me, but once again it seems like physical folks will have less than the full experience in the version on disc. I guess with how complex games are even the best studios struggle sometimes.

I'll give Insomniac credit for bucking the trend of releasing what amounts to a glorified download key.
The fact that PC gaming is SOL on that department is depressing. It's either digital or go fuck yourself.
I miss the old big boxes.
