Phil Spencer: announcement this week

Wouldn't be surprised if this podcast ends up being boring.

I mean you have phil and bond who are not capable of ever giving a straight answer.

I'm halfway expecting this is going to a huge waste of time. Phil Spencer and company makes a lot of extremely vague statements such as "every screen is an Xbox" but never really goes into detail of what that means for their games. I doubt we even hear the words "PlayStation" or "Switch".

But.....I've been wrong before so.....
I think they will try to put the emphasis on Xcloud gaming (which is shit as of writing and still in Beta).

This is basic PR 101. Say as little possible with as much wording as you can.

Yeah that's what I originally thought too. But I'm optimistically expecting to be surprised now with at least a couple of confirmations in there. I think the whole positive spin, Xbox Everywhere slogan along side some reassurance of hardware commitment, might be enough to allow them to let slip on some cross platform mentions. It will however be hilarious if it is nothing more than vague non committal BAU spiel though...

We gotta keep in mind that this whole thing is designed to calm the masses. Announcing games going to other platforms ain't going to do that. Doesn't matter if it is "only" Hi Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves (as many have pretended as being trivial ports). Any step in that direction is a sign of things to come and folks are going to act badly in response. That's why I think we get no details at all on games.

I do think we get a recommitment to hardware. That's an easy win. I think "cross-platform mentions" will simply be a matter of saying the words "cross-platform". The pertinent questions everyone wants answered, won't be.

Now that I've laid out my predictions for this enitre thing........I fully expect to be completely wrong.

They will have to announce some specifics.

Anyone know how long it is? I'm guessing :45 or an hour? You can't fill a whole hour with just PR speak.

I have no stakes in this but obviously curious cause gaming is a big hobby of mine. With that said, the main thing that needs to happen today is clear and concise messaging. There should be no need for long lengthy explanations post podcast, no matter how hard a pill to swallow they need to just be direct and put it out there.

WHY care about toxic fanboys who doesn't buy games anymore and miss potential 250 maus(ps and switch combined) consumers?
I was just throwing ideas at the board, best i could guess is bad buzz in social media affects casuals buying habits more than we think. But yeah, i get your point.

And they're gonna do the exact opposite of it.

Then why calling it a podcast? They already had a direct and have been planning to talk about it in the summer. Now that they can't have a full conference to soften the blow I fear a pretty long video talking about Xbox history, bringing in guests from the Xbox and 360 generations to use nostalgia as a weapon. And at the end a few phrases talking about either some games going to Switch or a stay tuned for more at our summer conference. Xbox problem is not just a messaging problem. The change in direction is killing years of efforts to nurture influencers. And that change seems inevitable. So instead of just saying it and confirming the rumors they will talk and talk until they can say whatever key sentences they have their PR teams asked them to say. A little like Phil in his kinda funny interview where he wanted to have the occasion to say sorry and had to do it by himself when Parris and the others did not gave him a good enough question.

Today's podcast is basically a massive PR exercise to assure and console the rabid Xbox fanboys, that all the leaks they have been hearing and reading about in the past fortnight aren't exactly true, and things aren't as bad as they have been made to believe. It is a carefully crafted piece for that particular audience, not so much to agnostic multi-platform folks. So temper your expectations. There won't be Starfield, Indiana Jones, or Blade announcements for PS5. The narrative will be centered around on some specific titles curated for other platforms as an attempt to reach a wider audience, while faffing about how critical exclusives are to Xbox ecosystem. And, this will all be packed to sell on the "look, how awesome things are happening at Xbox" with announcement of ABK games dropping on GamePass in near future.

Oh, and they are also announcing they are working on next-gen Xbox. Have fun.
Didn't bother watching because I read this.

Thanks.

LOL, just caught this piece of shit John Linneman saying that the Series S was a smart idea and that it makes more sense than the PS5 Digital which is just a worse version of the PS5 Standard... and that the Series S beat the PS5 Digital on price. First they're both digital only and at launch, they were only separated by a small margin that wasn't worth it. Whether someone decided to get the PS5 Digital or Standard is immaterial at that point. If Sony felt more pressure they would have released more digital sku, but they didn't.

This guy can't get any dumber and more biased.

I can't believe John Linneman has gotten this bad. I'd never take him as a guy to do this because he's getting a MS check. So what the heck happened? A worse version of the PS5 Standard? It's THE SAME CONSOLE, just without a drive.

It's not about direct payments.

His entire salary is based on console wars and he is a Sega fanboy turned Microsoft fanboy.

The amount of hemming and hawing in that video was disgusting. They're so turned up about the state of the industry because they don't want to admit that Sony is winning. They say that Sony hasn't done anything to deserve it, but that's objectively not true.

I criticize Sony all the time, but I do it objectively. No company is perfect, in fact they're largely imperfect, because people are imperfect.

But DF has no credibility left.

Just feels odd to go out of his way to act as if Sony doesn't deserve the sales that they've gotten. So weird.

Dude, I'm telling you it's a toxicity. Everyone things DF is above the console wars, but they've always been about the console wars.

He was a Sega fanboy and then a 360 fanboy and has convinced himself that Microsoft deserves success due to the 360 and that Sony doesn't deserve success.

Sony rebuilt themselves just like Nintendo did. Microsoft has never done that in the gaming space. Those who make excuses for them do so because they're fanatics or because they're livelihood depends on it, or both.
