Helldivers II broke 250k+ CCU on Steam: first PlayStation PC release to do so

A lot of people were adamant it would reach 100k.

On a Thursday, it reached 255k. It’s safe to say it will reach 300k+ on Steam this coming weekend.

More and more, I’m realising that Sony overpaid big time for Bungie, they could get smaller Studios like Arrowhead and get very good results with their GaaS initiative.

It's possible they overpaid for Bungie. 100% possible, but we won't know that until Marathon is released to be honest. Gotta give them time. Does Sony own the Helldivers IP? Or does it belong to Arrowhead?

DenchDeckard got banned? Having that guy use the laugh or triggered emoji is how I knew I was on point. Now how will I know?

I've had too many Helldivers 2 disconnects. I try playing it every night. But I've been sitting at level 9 for 3 nights in a row now cause after I disconnect a few times I switch to some other game.
Really hope they fix it up soon. I love what I can play of it.

That's why people need to calm down before knee-jerking to the idea of more GaaS output from Sony.

It was the 60%-40% split that pisses me off about Sony's GAAS push. No way should it EVER be 60% of their software budget.

I take it a lot has to do with aqcuisitions and founding new studios, or something like that?

I don't think we can make much sense out of just the 60/40 split.

It makes sense when you realize ~60% of the overall market is GAAS and that part of the market is still growing. The traditional games market has plateaued.

I am not going to celebrate it for a variety of reasons:
1) Halo Infinite had a 250k CCU as well. Doesnt mean much especially after seeing MS's announcement yesterday. Porting to PC is lost console sales and sales on their own digital platform where they get to keep 100% of the cut.
2) GaaS is very finicky. Anthem, Suicide Squad, Avengers all flopped for a variety of reasons, but above all they were a gigantic waste of time for these single player focused studios.
3) I actually liked the gameplay loop in avengers and anthem, and it seems suicide squad is decent in that department too. But people shied away despite the studio pedigree. Point is you cant ever predict what goes viral so why bother investing your best talent at it if its a roll of dice?
4) This success might cause them to revive Factions and any other gaas games they had cancelled. And fuck that. i dont want anymore gaas titles from Sony.

I am happier for the studio who deserve the success but Sony will take all the wrong lessons from this, double down on PC ports, double down on GaaS, and double down day one PC releases.

Sony will double down on PC ports and gaas because that's the only way to sustain growth and have the financial stability to invest *also* in the games you personally like.
A world where they only develop AAA single player games that cost 300 millions, take 5-6 years to be developed, are restricted exclusively to a console platform that can only hope to reach the same audience of the previous console is not sustainable.
The CFO guy (soon to be SIE's next interim CEO) spelled it out clearly the other day and it's pointless to put the head under the sand.
Sony's strategy, if it works, is perfectly balanced. Success of their initiative is very important to avoid worse consequences aka further increase of software prices, full multiplatform strategy like Microsoft, risky and costly single player projects being canceled and unprofitable studios being shut down.

I think you are being too aggressive here. A smart Sony would realize that what you said is right......and should steer them clear of going overboard with too many GAAS games. Concord and Fairgames is next. How many more GAAS games do they need?

- GT7
- Helldivers 2
- MLB The Show
- Concord
- FairGames
- Destiny
- Marathon
- Horizon MMO

I mean GEEZ........do they need more than this? 3 or hits, 4 haven't come out yet, and one was a hit that they are trying to turn around. But how are their 8 not enough?

I take it a lot has to do with aqcuisitions and founding new studios, or something like that?

I don't think we can make much sense out of just the 60/40 split.

Oh that's a great point! That makes sense as to why it went from 12% of the budget to 60%. I'm assuming it may fall back to 40%-50% after the year 2026.

So is this considered a success for them? If it is then gaas will prob get doubled downed.

They've already quadrupled down on GAAS games.

Like it or not but EVERY gaas game coming out of playstation studios will have bungie's stamp of approval whatever that entails. If they advised a premiere studio as big as Naughty Dog then of course they consulted with Arrowhead because Sony wants to make sure every first party gaas game goes through a process which includes Bungie, it's actually smart because they aren't experts in this area.

Oh I used some numbers from 2022.

Then again most of the time I don't know what I'm doing.

Well, your number is more recent / accurate than mine. The first one I found was from wikipedia, much older (2010).

In any case, I think he wasn't trying to provide an exact or very close number. He was just saying that there's a ton of people playing, a huge scale for him.

Maybe I should go over there and count them. Not to mention bring back some chocolate to share with everyone.

Oh and that super salty liquorice. I love that stuff.

Why today and not this weekend? Do Steam players play more on Fridays or something?
Today's record will likely be broken tomorrow. I just looked at the data, and there are signs that a new record (~275,000 CCU) will be set today.

Helldivers 2 is actually setting new records every day as more and more people are buying the game. The sales are likely 3 million by now by my estimates, when it was just "near a million" 3-4 days ago.

Their current strategy to GAAS (new teams making them) while allowing their core studios to continue focusing on single player that has multimedia potential needs to be right. Because that strategy being wrong won't stop them wanting a live service success, it will just push them further into desperate actions like forcing their acclaimed studios on to GaaS projects

If you don't want meddling in singleplayer studios the best outcome is this.

Thats not to say Sony can't still double down and demand more GAAS. But I know for certain that they would be more desperately seeking it if they can't find it with the current studios dedicated to GAAS projects

This is going to break 300k today, and probably 350k+ tomorrow wouldn’t be surprised if it does 500k, great idea doing the xp boost during the game having a mini viral moment for PS on steam, tbh it’s tempting me to get it early on ps.

Yeah, I came back, and we boarded the plane, and the game got crashed. We got nothing in the end.

P PectacularOz - also, sorry for keeping you waiting so long in the game.
That sucks. Luckily, it's not too hard to gather resources, plus we get 50% bonus this whole weekend.

Was trying out the sniperrifle from the Warbond the first match, but it kinda sucks. Or maybe you'd really need to take time and headshot from a distance.
Should give it a couple more tries. Lol

Ps5 or PC?
PS5. Didn't have much trouble irt gamecrashed so far, but the last 3 days it's a bit iffy.

The bonus is for XP and Requisition Slips, right?

That's good, but I feel what we need most and more often are Medals and Samples. Those are the things that are needed the most to progress.

But how quickly we're running through the content, Arrowhead will have to drop new updates fairly soon lol.

Lol yeah, they need to hurry up with the Killzone DLC.

Just update the other thread that people are still posting in about player count. No need for a thread on every milestone someone thinks is thread worthy.
Nah this is fine. Normally the forum is filled with numerous "Phil said this today...." threads.

In business, you run towards money, not away from it.

Helldivers 2 shows us the multiplayer market is the land of milk and honey.
I mean yeah, but they literally can't all be hits. playstation would be making gaas games that are competing w/ each other for players. I like that PS is investing more in multiplayer games. My only problem was that they wanted to make like 12 of them at the same time.

What's the predicted player fall off by mid march? 4-6 weeks post launch are often the markers of staying power vs FOMO.

It's going to drop a ton. The endgame is poorly designed. The honeymoon period will wear off in a couple of weeks and over 90% of the player base will leave in 4-6 weeks. Book it.

Around that time they will have the remaining important bugs (the matchmaking) fixed, a great amount of great reviews in the media, the user ratings in Steam very improved compared to now and I assume they'll have published the first post launch Warbond/extra unlockables.

So I think they will have passed their peak, which I think will be at around 400-450K aprox. and then will have came down at 300K peak per weekend.
