Playstation Meeting 2013 Thread: Go Fourth

I'm betting none of those games look even remotely that good at release, especially the dragon game from Capcom. Games shown at console reveals never live up to their visuals.

I wasn't incredibly pleased to be honest, it seemed like it was revealed too early, so much of what was shown was old or just slightly updated, it certainly wasn't anything to pull me in.

I liked:
Share button - being able to take screenshots/video is great
Seeing Watchdogs - I hope this comes to PC with great support.
The Witness - but I can play this on PC
The racing game - it at least looked decent
Clearly committed to developers.
Media Molecule is relatively fascinating
Vita connectivity [I don't own one but wish I had more reasons to]

Neutral on:
The cloud stuff

I disliked:
No reveal of the console
The interface - I love the minimalistic, clean, and functional PS3. This looks like a massive way to advertise to the player each time they load up.
Automatically downloading titles - I know this should be optional, but the idea that my limited internet connection can deal with having it all sucked away by the PS4 is insane.
Tactical pad - I haven't yet been shown the point of this, and prefer the tablet.
DS4 stick edges - I don't think I will like that
Lack of shown games: it was like people weren't ready for this conference no matter how smoothly it was pulled off.
Rumored subscription service - I have no interest in this
Infamous 2 - showed me nothing about the game, and is yet another sequel to a game that doesn't really need one. It also borrowed conceptually from Watchdogs.
If the Heavy Rain developer wants technology, why doesn't he just make games on PC? That just seemed silly to me.
Orange/blue - Seemed like it was everywhere from the Watchdog box to the Killzone demo.

What I wanted to see:
Something from Square
New IPs

Small aside about Watch_Dogs... I was actually a little disappointed with the demo. Not the looks, they were fine, but the interactivity implied by it seemed to be drastically reduced when compared with the E3 demo last year. I'm hoping that's just different bits of the game and not the case that the E3 demo was mostly scripted features that have since proved too hard to implement 'for real'.

I'd sort of like to have the *point* of the game established sometime. At E3 you were assassinating a random guy at a soiree; today you were a.... vigilante guy stopping a random pursesnatching? For the hell of it? And then running away from your heroics... and murdering a police officer on the way?

And finally... isn't there something very sinister about the idea of a "victim chance" meter? IF you were to show that shot to someone who's not a gamer, I can't help but think that they'd think it was a rapist simulator or something similarly unpleasant.

That was a super high quality console announcement IMO. Sony really hit it out of the ball park.

My favourite points:

-There was a good mix of existing and new IP to get excited over.
-Killzone looked better than I was expecting with the reported hardware spec...this bodes well for the future
-8gb of GDDR5...wow
-The final controller looks really, really great
-Hardware enabled remote play for the Vita on all titles (next gen toilet gaming sessions ftw)

I'd give Sony a 10/10 but they didn't show the actual console hardware. I'm a bit perplexed with that.

Edit: I can't believe people are whinging over the PS Meeting... what else were people expecting?

I hope they don't continue dumbing it down, I guess its permanently lost now. They won't go back once they've started down that path.

oh yeah well, I totally agree on the gameplay points. But the graphics..

either way, I think I'll finally buy a Playstation.

Clearly the console is connected to your brain. That's why they didn't show it. The brain cyberization is going to be a bitch.

No one is this dumb.

Yeah clearly i thought the ps4 was as light as air in the cloud......no thats not what i meant. I meant it would be nice to see the hardware, and nice to have confirms involving what the physical/digital distro situation was.

I was much more impressed by the conference than I thought I would be; due to early stumbling blocks early on in the PS3 life pretty much all my friends went 360 so just through sheer hubris the PS3 took the second chair this gen for me. Some of this stuff has me more excited for anything out of Sony since PS2.

The flipside though is that they completely didn't address used games or the playstation +/world/subscription stuff. Those could be major tipping points for a quite a few people, and given that it would have really put the screw to Microsoft if they had come out anti-used games and anti-online fees for multiplayer makes me wonder if they're going in that direction.

Definitely came away impressed, but there's still some really important stuff we don't know about yet.

Oh yea, suckerpunch can go eat a bag of dicks for ripping off watchdogs. So bad.

That dude had me rolling on the floor. "I got tear gassed" like it's a badge of honor.

Pretty nonplussed by what they showed, but it was pretty much what we expected. It's interesting that The Witness is a timed exclusive, but that game definitely doesn't look like a next gen showcase. Also, 25 hours of line-tracing puzzles sounds a little tedious, so hopefully there's more to it than what they showed. Pretty much everything else they showed (shooters, racers, action games) weren't really my taste, so I won't comment on them. It's too bad that something called "Deep Down" wasn't a dungeon crawler, but maybe that's too niche for this sort of event or budget.

Wish we could've seen the box itself. The controller looked pretty rough (sort of reminiscent of the original DS prototype from Nintendo), so maybe the hardware styling is still in a preliminary state.

Alright guys, I need your help. Where can I go to watch the whole event from beginning to end? All the links in the first post are streams which have ended!

I liked much of what was shown but I'm not digging the whole social focus. I don't play all the time and neither do most of my friends. It's there to help gamers get deeper into gaming, but I don't feel it does much to get new gamers interested. But we'll see. I was really more interested in the games.

Yes, the Ubi guy confirmed it on the post-game show.

However, it's more of a politics thing. He said that because a dev kit is essentially a PC that tries to match the PS4 specs as closely as possible. Therefore, the demo isn't "technically" running on the PS4.

No, but I don't think it was asking too much to see what the PS4 actually looks like at a PS4 unveil. That was beyond bizarre. There is something going on with this system they don't want to announce yet, and I'm guessing it is not something that fans of traditional console gaming is gonna like.

No blooray?

Yeah, I'm also completely indifferent to this. The main reason I'm inclined to wait a few years before buying a console this time around is that I doubt the added cost from Kinect/Eye and social overhead will be worth it.

PS4 seems like it could be pretty cool if everything works as intended. Lots of ambitious ideas in there - stream everything in the store as an instant demo, take control of a friend's game (while looking at them), the way it handles downloads, doing the Kinect thing with the camera/controller, doing the WiiU thing with Vita. Being able to save and share recent gameplay quickly and easily is a great idea as well.

Thought the conference itself was an entertaining show. They didn't embarrass themselves with arrogance and they hit a lot of spots without showing too much. Lots of personalities, both for good and bad/good. Cerny was an inspired choice to handle the nuts and bolts. Glad they showed off some of the UI in there, too.

Games all had that conference slice polish but at least there was a bunch of 'em on display. The Witness looks intoxicating, Blizzard was surprising and new IP's are always welcome. More excited for the platform's potential based on the first half then the blockbuster showcase of the second, but they made good on both ends as far as announcements go. Hopefully it all comes together.

A was blown away with 8gigs. I honestly didn't expect that. And what got me wondering... In their public document you can find the 1.84 TFlops. Are they only for the GPU? Does it mean, that the overall power might surpass 2 TFlops(if even slightly)?

So, this is how I feel about the event.

TL;DR Hardware was great but software could use some work. The graphics were great but the gameplay improvements need to still be proven.

As soon as they spoke about the streaming features, background downloads and suspending suspensions, they could have fucked off for all I care, that's all I wanted to know. Seeing The Witness was just icing on the cake.

They definitely need more games and the console itself to really stamp in the impression, but for sure they have my attention.

Oh, and no Kaz. All those .gifs! Wasted!

This was my only disappointment for today. No Kaz Hirai.

Oh well... E3 then. I was impressed by the amount of games that were shown. Although, there were also some pointless showings - the one from Square-Enix especially (what the hell were they thinking?!). All in all, I'd rate it a 4/5 - I'm intrigued for the system and can't wait to hear more.

Let's hope with all that was shown today that most (if not all) will be implemented accordingly (Gaikai and BC for PS1/2/3 for example). We even got the specs which I'm still surprised at and going over... it will be expensive is all I know.

What a bad attitude you have.

Watch Dogs gameplay is about hacking and controlling technological devices in society to advance towards your goal.

SuckerPunch game is about telekinetic, teleportation powers, it is a super-hero/villain game much like their previous Infamous games, but with the focus on powers.

I think the reason you are immaturely linking the two, is because of the setting, the notion of Big Brother watching you, controlling you.
This is a setting that is only going to become more relevant in games as we move forward.
Hell, we can even say that Watch Dogs ripped off Matrix in a sense...
Fix the attitude.

Tech and system features look to be really nice. Games, not so much. I personally really dislike both the Killzone and Infamous series. They are both so incredibly dull to me. I'm not sure what that Media Molecule thing was supposed to be. Whether that was a game or just a tech demo, not something that interests me. Why they had David Cage out there talking about tech of all things was strange. Sony's first party studios have really gone down hill overall in my eyes. Square Enix was just pathetic announcing a Final Fantasy game before they even finished the 2 or 3 others that they have already announced. Capcom's game and Watch Dogs looked like they have potential. Oh and Diablo 3. Fart noise.

I'll believe this Gaikai shit when I see it. Streaming old PS 1 2 and 3 games is nothing but an empty promise at this point. We all knew that there was no way you would be able to play PS3 games because of the vastly different architecture of the systems so that's not really a surprise. The streaming thing could be cool but I am just really skeptical of it working well.

So far I'm not on board. A lot of potential in the system but I need to see some more interesting games that I can't get on my PC. Also, long conference was too long.

The first part of the conference was amazing, all the share, spectate and social stuff was amazing considering how limited it is on the PS3. The games were underwhelming but there's time for that and i'm sure they wanted to save stuff for E3.

Honestly, this conference was better than several of the last E3s combined. Maybe my expectations were low, but they showed way more than I expected. And if there's any unknown bad news regarding the console, such as DRM and such, they didn't mention it tonight. It all sounds very good. 8GB of GDDR5 was obviously not within anyone's realistic expectations, but they did it. Inferior multiplats should not be an issue this gen. I also loved their change in presentation. No montages of 50 unnamed games. No history of Playstation or boring charts. It was a long conference, but there wasn't really any filler. The Move stuff was the most boring part for me, but overall the presentation was great.

Regarding people moaning about Sony not showing enough games, I don't see how anyone realistically expected them to show even as much as they did. And they obviously have to save some stuff for E3. Why blow their load this early, just to have the hype die down by June? And if they did show everything tonight, the same people would bitch about seeing the same shit at E3. Sony's damned if they do, and damned if they don't. I personally think holding back is the better strategy. Have the hype fresh at E3 and later, closer to launch.

Also. That old man looks like Peter Molyneux.

The entire fucking premise played like the same intro watchdogs had last year.

In fact everyone in the world thought it was watchdogs being introduced.

lol no it wasn't, it looked like superheroes and that's exactly what infamous games are. The only similarity is the "cameras" thing. It's good to know that an unreleased game somehow is being copied by a game that came out in 2009.

They hit a lot of the key points with this meeting to get them out of the way for E3 in which they have time to show off more stuff that gamers care about hopefully. They obviously didn't want to tip their hat to what Naughty Dog, SSM, and PD have to show yet, rather save them for E3 when they'll be going head to head with MS's E3, fighting for hype.

What Sony did establish though was some early thunder to get people talking about "next-gen" and the media will roll out it's articles creating further hype in which all they can do is say, "hopefully MS can do something similar". They created some mind shard that's for sure.

Great conference, now I just can't wait for E3. Everything about ps4 sounds really good, I'm so happy to hear it's developer friendly.
