Why do you think ios and android games / apps sell millions?

For me, yes.

I only resell as games are too damn expensive anyway.

I'm not a collector. I don't replay games. I'm all for digital distribution if the price is right. I have no problems paying say up to $40 for the experience of playing a great game once. $60 is pushing it.

I mean, I regularly spend $9.50 (2D matinee) to $18.50 (Imax) to see a movie in the theater in my city, and that's roughly two hours of entertainment. Most games I get at least 10 hours out of, so it's still a pretty good entertainment value if we're talking $40 and under. Hell, even at $60 it can be a great value for something like Skyrim or online games like Borderlands that I'm dropping 80+hours into.

For me, not being a collector, I'm not paying to own a physical game disc. I'm paying for the experience of playing the game. Resell ability I do like, as that's a way to drive the cost of that experience down some. So if we go fully digital with no resell rights, then prices need to come down for me to be ok with it since I lose that outlet for recouping some costs.

But really, as I said earlier, I'd rather just move to a system of just paying monthly fees and having access to any movie I wanted to watch, any game I wanted to play etc. in the cloud. That's something that fits my needs more as I don't want to keep cluttering my life with physical goods since I plan to move around a lot, and even buying individual digital goods is mostly a waste since I so seldom replay a game or rewatch a movie.

But MS is a far cry from that with wanting the same $60 for a restricted copy of a game. That's BS and I can't support that. If Sony does the same, I'm not sure what I'd do. Pick one and just only buy games in $40 and under sales I guess.

So since we have established the concept is ok with you from a consumer rights perspective as long as the value is there for you, if MS has decent sales and prices, you would be ok with this?

They wouldn't do all this egregious shit if they weren't certain Sony was going to follow suit. Dark times.

How many times have we said "Company X wouldn't be stupid enough to that, would they?"

Let's wait and see on Sony.

As per the MS finalized rules, utterly disappointing. PS4 is the only hope now.

I don't want to express my full disappointment or anger until we get the full view ( SONY's actual plans) but for now I am annoyed.

I was hoping for E3 to show good games for me to consider it, now it has to show INCREDIBLE games for me to consider it.

I can live with everything on that list, being that I don't buy used and don't sell my games, but the 24 hour thing sucks, yes I have Internet all the time, but I live in NYC and my net has been down sometimes due to construction or of such things.

It's straight bullshit, I hate time limits in games, and the actual console has a built in time limit?

What?

PS4 for the fucking win.

lol imagine almost beating a game on hard and then suddenly, "XBOX IS NOW SHUTTING DOWN. PLEASE CONNECT TO INTERNET TO RESTART."

31 million Xbox 360 owners never got a Silver or Gold Xbox Live account and hardly ever connected to the internet whatsoever.

butLOL no big deal guys, it's the future! You buy a physical copy of a thing and don't actually own it! Hurray!

You'd better be taking notes baby, that post E3 write-up is going to be epic!

I think Stump's post is spot on. I think the disconnect is that lots of people (myself included) do not understand and have not been sold on the idea of a digital-only games console. The only reason I think people have not rejected it out of hand this time around is the strength of the Xbox brand (compare and contrast it to the PSP Go, I suppose). That's my personal sentiment.

It's going to take very significant sweeteners to overcome that resistance to a digital-only console because I don't understand why you are doing this. The market is not evaporating or in serious contraction, we have a very vibrant retail presence, we have very active secondary and private markets.

I think I need more than just pricing to get me over this. I know I am in a premium hobby; I don't mind paying lots of money because I'm into the ritual of it all. But lots of the problems that the Steam client solved (patching being one of them) don't apply here and the only arguments people can muster are focused on publisher well-being (frankly they can all get fucked).

I'm very concerned.

Something tells me even Chris Crocker wouldn't have a tirade on M$'s behalf after all the BS they pulled.

Not for all the moneyhats in the world.

PLEASE let this console be a colossal fucking failure. PLEASE. Send this industry a message that this bullshit is unacceptable.

Unfortunately, I don't think the mass media or the massmarket cares about this stuff. They will buy the XBO regardless.

I bought an Xbox this gen, but now I hope the XBO sells miserably and gets MS out of the industry. They keep shitting on it and making it worse than it ever was.

Want to know why those steam deals happen in the first place? Because people can't resell and trade games to people. If people want a game on steam, they have to pay whatever the developer or publisher is charging for the game, meaning money is always going directly to the developer and publisher.

With such extra security and guarantees on their payments, it's no wonder that they will often get aggressive in pricing on some of their older games by selling them for $15, $10, or even less, because they can make a few extra, guaranteed bucks on the side, because there is no used games market to exclude them from reaping those benefits on Steam. The fact that nobody or so few on GAF, a site where we are, I guess, suppose to know more than the average mainstream gamer, gets this is simply mind boggling.

You get those deals on steam because there are no used games or game trading, period.

It's fun following your posts. Just goes to show that the only way you're an insider going up against the confirmations of cboat is if you were a PR sentry from MS to keep a tab on things.

Your posts are extremely lop-sided, at any rate.

If you wanna make the comparison to Steam then you best be bringing Steam prices. This seriously sounds awful on so many levels I hope Sony doesn't take this path or this will be first gen I don't buy a console.

Guys, I would hold off crucifying Microsoft for a few days as I am sure Sony will have something very similar to announce. Sony's policy could be slightly less restrictive, but i do think the option for publishers to block will be present.

And I think we can all think of one publisher which will gladly block the ability to trade in games. You know, the one who recently pretended to be "mr nice guy" by cancelling all their online passes.

Why? Microsoft deserves this shitstorm - and if Sony decides to follow suit then they'll deserve their shitstorm as well.
It doesn't change the situation if two companies are shitting on consumer rights instead of one.

I think what bothers people the most about these policies is that it's out of our hands.

The masses have spoken. They want their Xboxes. MS cut us out. Game over.

Remember when Harrison told Kotaku it'd be once every 24 hours and then Microsoft said that was a "potential scenario" lol

Yup and I hope you grill MS in your one-on-one interview (assuming it doesn't get canceled suddenly due to "schedule conflicts", heehee).

I think all of the policies they announced are logical extensions of the fact that this is a digital-only console.

Yeah, I'm actually very interested in all digital and like retail games being treated like Steamworks. I do rent, so that's the tradeoff for me. I'm not as insulted by these policies as everyone else. I think they come with the territory. I just need to determine if pros outweigh the cons for a purchase.

and those customers probably made them the least amount of money too. I don't see why this is so shocking... non-Nintendo consoles are almost always loss leaders, so they're focused of milking each consumer for all their worth rather than reaching more consumers

they made a business decision. if it causes them to crash and burn, well... I'll stay for the schadenfruede

I don't want to see any gaming journalists defending this. They should all be slamming Microsoft on this hard. There is nothing good.

Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners.

It's amazing how people will give up their rights because of price (heck I'm somewhat guilty of it too) but it doesn't change the principle of it. People should fight for their rights because of things like this that will happen over time. They suck you in by starting small but then it gets worse over time.

Thou must giveth in order to taketh away.

Price is everything. The reason people trade in games in the first place is to recoup some value from a high priced product.

Lower the prices and the need to recoup value diminishes.

This is where Microsoft is screwing the pooch. They're restricting usage, keeping the prices high, and continuing to charge for basic services. All take, no give.

Well, now that it seems Microsoft has confirmed the worst of this crap, and is seemingly doubling down on going forth with these terrible policies, I can save myself alot of money by skipping their next console.

I never thought console gaming would come to this. I only accept it on PC because the games are way, way cheaper than on consoles and in the event a company like Valve goes full evil like Microsoft has just done I can always find modifications for my games library to remove them from Steam DRM.

You know it;s kind of funny that Microsoft announces this shit officially a day after I went on an Amazon used games spree and ordered up a bunch of old out-of-print games I missed out on. I got several PS1, PS2, Gamecube and Wii titles that for some reason I passed over the first time around. Microsoft's system makes it so Xbone may not have the type of longevity for collectors and retro gamers that all prior machines had. Once their servers in Redmond go offline, and their magical super cloud floats over to new device support, is their response going to be "deal with it"?

There are lots of physical things you can't resell

Such as?

PC gaming world has dealt with that for a long time now. Does Gamestop accept my Crysis 3 PC disc for trade in?

You're American, so come from a country with fucked up laws that screw consumers. The US courts have ruled in favour of software companies restricting resale in licence agreements. The EU has ruled in the opposite way, siding with consumers. You can resell licences for both physical and digital software (the Court explicitly stated there is no distinction between mediums). You've been able to sell PC games on UK eBay for ever, it's just up tot eh buyer to ensure they can play the game (no DRM stopping them).

Here's why I think Steam is a terrible comparison even beyond the pricing argument:

1. Steam has a guarantee that all games you own will be available all the way until they go out of business, and maybe even after that.

2. PC games don't have to go through steam in order to be released for the PC.

3. Steam actually has an offline mode that works for months, not hours

4. PC games are way easier to abuse copying/installing and passing it on than console games, where you can not do that on a closed console system.

5. Most steam games will work as you continue to upgrade hardware and OS, while it's very possible not a single Xbox One game will work on the Xbox after that.

6. PCs are better than consoles in a lot of ways. You could at least say you're trading used games for better graphics or control schemes by giving up the consoles and the used games that went with it.

7. Some people did stay away from PCs for the very reason of wanting to own the games they buy and now are running out of places to turn to.

This is a good thing.

That to me says they aren't going to allow it, but they didn't want to give us all the bad news in one go.

Well, I say bad news. It's pretty irrelevant to me at this point.

So you can't sell games privately unless you've been friends with the person for 30 days and gift it to them. You can only gift a game once.

Games can be resold or traded in at participating retailers, if the publisher of the game has enabled this functionality.

Not clear on what this family sharing is about.

Renting's no longer a thing?

Loaning?

All in all it sounds kind of shit, but better then when Phil Harrison said there'd be fees involved.

Oh ok. Sounds kind of shit.

Oh wow. I didn't read it all before..

So not only can third party publishers choose to disallow resale, but they can demand a transfer fee if they want. No doubt this will be passed onto the customer via higher game prices.

EA must be loving this right now.
Oh ok. Sounds kind of shittier.
