NPD Sales Results for August 2013 [Up2: Tons of Nintendo Software]

Calamari41

41 > 38
Doesn't matter, as a $60 game releasing in 2013 it looks incredibly bad. As $29 game, it looks good.

I guess we'll find out if you're alone soon enough. The dude I was responding to, though, seemed to be suggesting that the game didn't upgrade the graphics in any kind of drastic way. Or something.

For the people who wonder why Nintendo keeps going back to Mario:

New Super Mario Bros. 2 (406,000 in 2013, 1.85 million total)
Mario Kart 7 (352,000 in 2013, 2.84 million total)
Super Mario 3D Land (265,000 in 2013, 2.86 million total)

I think people know why they keep going back to Mario, I think the problem have is that their response to those great sales is to make:

New Super Mario Bros U
Mario Kart 8
Super Mario 3D World

The art directions shits on most ps360 games from a great hieght, but technically the graphics look wii-like.

Last thing I'm posting about the topic.

Sorry if this is a bit ott.

How many Wii games have self shadowing and SSAO while running in 1080p?

Doesn't matter. What people will see is a game that looks 10 years old when they see commercials or screenshots. Nintendo should have had a stunning game from day 1 to help sell the console to people.

If we're talking about just sales then no, I don't think WW HD will move the needle.

(It's shaping up to be pretty awesome though)

Alright so we're going with 31k for WiiU.

I'll be updating the NIntendo First Year Performance graph, be right back...

(there's got to be an easier way than imageshack everytime ugh...)

Fucking gifs in an NPD thread, for the love of Chrome.

[Dragon's Crown] 26k Vita version, less than 60k for PS3 version via Creamsugar.

Interestingly enough on PSN the ratio is nearly the inverse going by the flawed metric that is the number of user ratings.

Wii U numbers for DI are definitely a good indicator of what the userbase generally wants when you compare it to SC:B Wii U numbers.

just a pie

I get ...

360 = 150.26°
Wii or Wii U = 50.74°
PS3 = 111.18°
Wii or Wii U = 47.72°

=>

360 - 96K
PS3 - 71K
Wii or Wii U - 32.4K
Wii or Wii U - 30.5K

PSV almost outsold than Wii U, try next month please.
Wii U is better than last month.
3DS > 130K

So going with ...

3DS: > 130K
360: 96K
PS3: 71K
Wii: 32.4K
Wii U: 30.5K
PSV: 29K

creamsugar,

What ~% was the Black 3DSXL of the total 3DS sales for the month? Maybe another chart? :D

Do people think WW HD is a huge deal that will sell a bunch of Wii U's?

Come on... it looks better than most remasters and remakes but it is what it is. I personally think it's overpriced, but that's just my opinion. I don't think it's going to have the impact of OOT 3DS, and wouldn't even come close to an actual new Zelda game.

29K

cream posted it earlier.

We came to the conclusion that the Wii U is the blue one, which is smaller than the grey one. It is due to the console's main colors we came to that conclusion.

It seems like a downgrade from the GameCube version, in at least some ways, due to the removal of the Tingle Tuner.

Yes, but not the %. With the % of total 3DS sales that the Black 3DSXL made up, we can get an actual number for total 3DS sales. ;)

Donny...

'Shouldn't vita be below wii u? The grammar isn't clear but I read it as vita almost outsold the Wii u. Check back next month suggests slight weekly up uptick due to price drop that, given full month, would out it on top.

hm. i'm going to say 42k for the wii u next month.

it's currently doing about 7-8k a week, and has been for a while.

7k for three weeks, plus wow gee-whiz tripled sales for the fourth week is 21k. add them together and a 12k increase over august.

i think it's october that's a five-week month this year.

Derp, sorry, misread what you said.

Also, don't know if you saw my edit:

And above reasoning would make sense lol.

Glad to see Pikmin 3 charting

Yea PS3 and 360 need a price drop, I was looking for a used PS3 for GtaV and they were still too expensive, I will wait for PS4 and Xbone to come out then find one cheaper.

I think Zelda bundle for $300 can do better than that.

if sales continued on what they were from july until the price drop, vita sales quadrupled in the last week. if that stayed constant through september, sales would wind up around 68k for the month. my guess is that it will wind up around half that (34-40k).

The WiiU's sales are low enough that even the small number of people who would buy a system for Wind Waker HD are probably enough to make a noticeable bump.

Noticeable but not impactful in the long run. And you have to think that a lot of the people who really care about WW are the same kind of people who would buy any Nintendo console day one.

coupons don't get advertising campaigns. saving $50 off a $350 thing isn't the same as simply buying a $300 thing either. i also didn't know that the wii u had been discounted by $50 in the us very regularly (honestly haven't kept up).

getting the 2 in front of the 99 is important. it's psychological thing. you start spending $3xx and you're well on your way to $500. you spend $2xx on anything and there's a better chance you won't spend less than half a grand.

having the remake of the wind waker also affords them the opportunity to show an added value to the system. it's not just that the wii u is getting a decent drop- it's getting a decent price drop and you can get a new game for it. it would be different if they just cut the price down with no additional software incentive. it would have been more difficult to advertise better price + game that's been out a year versus better price + brand new thing.

60k would still be horrible, but it would be a start on improving things. the market right now isn't very great in general, but at this point it's not about beating whatever console, but forming its own faithful userbase. the vita was able to do that in japan. the wii u might be able to do that in the us.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Vita has the hooks with indies and PS4 so it will stick around. The Wii U will essentially be a Nintendo player - much more so than any other Nintendo system.

Thank you good sir! Relative to the userbase, the splinter cell sku performed relatively just as terribly as the others. Slightly worse than 360, slightly better than ps3.

As a young console, the Wii U has a lot higher percentage of core gamers and a lot higher percentage of active systems than the old pS3 and 360. It SHOULD have a higher penetration rate.

And also, as someone else said, penetration rate means very little to companies who are trying to recoup their costs and make money.

i'm treating the 7k/w as a given, so it all comes down to how well it does in the final week of the month. if it quadruples sales, then monthly numbers would be around 50k. if it quintuples sales, then we're getting close to 60k. the problem with 35k/w is that it would mean more people would be buying a wii u at a faster rate than the 3ds. even if it's just one week, it's ridiculously high. that's why 60k is the absolute max i can see it reaching.

Are you really suggesting that indies on Vita and streaming PS4 games are better selling points than Nintendo's games on the Wii U? Even then, the Wii U is getting indie games too. I see the Vita being dropped in NA before the Wii U. Vice versa in Japan and Europe.

Sony marketing?

This is Sony we're talking about. If I didn't look up gaming-related things on the internet, I would still not know the Vita exists.

Not gonna lie, there was a few months where I forgot the Vita existed. Granted this was between the PS4 and Xbox One reveals and I had personal manners too, but it just completely slipped my mind that the Vita was a thing.

the vita isn't selling in japan because of indies. it's selling because of a particular type of software. the wii u will be able to make a home for family-oriented games and kid-friendly games beyond nintendo's stuff. we're already seeing it happen.

Looking at Pikmin 3's sales WW so far it doesn't look like it is going to turn a profit. With such a small userbase Nintendo is unlikely to start funding big 50 million dollar projects for it.

No. I'm suggesting it will have a better shot of maintaining a dedicated niche audience than the Wii U, which will sell more but have a more casual audience who will buy less and definitely care less.

But they will at least buy Mario, Mario Kart, Smash, and Zelda, so it will definitely outsell the Vita in the end.
