I like MP 1/2 noir atmosphere, but there's no other game that looks like MP 3

MP 3 is unique in its presentation. Many people dont like certain aspects of it, but I love it for being like that.

Those flashbacks in the US were cool because they were used sparringly. A whole game in that environment would have looked too boring and samey compared to MP 3 São Paulo's setting, imo.

Rockstar kinda mixed São Paulo with Rio de Janeiro some times, but they did a tremendous job bringing the city to life.

mp3 all the way, it was just relying a bit too much on cutscenes.
also the best tps gameplay rockstar ever managed by far.
can’t imagine why they can’t just copy paste it to their open world games

I loved all 3 games. 2 is my favorite though, I used to re-play it every winter but fell off 5-6 years ago. I am megahyped for the remakes.

Prefer the Noir big city grit of 1&2. Not often that sequels beat the original but MP2 is just so awesome.

MP1-2, but I don't mean the comic book cutscenes, rather the overall aesthetic and tone.
MP2 already leaned more on cutscenes compared to the first.
I think it's fitting for a modern day MP to be full-on cutscene-driven like MP3. It's just the whole visual identity being lifted from a Tony Scott movie whole sale, and how Max's character had to be warped to fit that, is what disgruntles me about the third game.
I thought the cutscenes were cool, they're well paced and they're not that long at all. And on PC they ARE skippable, so replaying MP3 multiple times was effortless for me. Also a cool thing that in cutscenes Max carries actual guns you have on him at the time, like if you've got a shotgun Max will carry it in off-hand, which I have not seen done in games before or since.

Max Payne 1 > all. I can't stand what they did with 3. 2 was at least a serviceable sequel, just inferior to the original. Nothing will ever top that first game. Growing up in NJ across the Hudson from NY, that game resonated with me in ways I cannot describe in words. It's pure soul and I'll love it until the day I die.
Exactly this. And I don't even live in NY.

The first 2 were fantastic. And to be honest, MP3 is a good game is well, but I would've liked it better if it were a totally different character than Max. I just don't like what they did storywise in the franchise.

I loved MP 3 but personally, I think R* overdid the cutscenes and the god awful multicolour 'banding' effect they had was so overused. I read somewhere that the cutscenes were used to advance the narrative but also used to disguise the loading of the levels. The actual game is great though.

I think this would've been well received. MP3 was such a stylistic shift from the previous titles that it looked almost unrecognizable coming off MP2.
Still a fun game, but it maybe could've worked even better as another character's story in the same universe as Max Payne, sharing similar rules & mechanics.

The Tony Scott style of directing was headache inducing, I think it was kind of a bummer they let go off the noir feel of the first 2 games. MP3 was fun, but also frustrating. I should revisit it someday, I do have a PS3 around.

I loved the first two, never tried the third. I did not like the direction Rockstar took it -- ultra-serious, "suffer porn" as a poster said earlier, long cinematics, the setting, etc.

Personally, I would love a mix of both. I would rather prefer cutscenes over comic book format, but I think the frequency of them should be significantly reduced and a bigger focus should be put on gameplay. I also loved the noir atmosphere of the original games much more

Man I rocked MP3 so hard my socks went stiff like floor tiles! I LOVE that fucking game! I wish they'd do a remaster of it.

Max Payne 1 and 2 were classic detective noire action.

Max Payne 3 was Man on Fire the game.

Loved all three of them.

I liked Max Payne 3 a lot but it was very different. I prefer Max Payne 1's style to all of of them. The gritty, comic book, crime noir was just really cool. 2 was good as well but I didn't like the character design change even if it did look a little more realistic.
