Sonic Origins recently came out and it got me thinking about my love for sonic 2 & sonic 3 & knuckles specifically, and how I've beat these games hundreds off times as child and absolutely love them still now I'm adult.

I literally just know the games like the back off my hand and usually unlock super sonic in the first two or three zones.
& The Mystic Cave was such a genuine surprise on sonic 2, absolutely loved the addition of that stage!

(only linking a tweet, as it won't let me upload the images I wanted to upload) :(

Tell me about your favourite games that you can happily go back to and beat any time you feel like :)

Super Metroid - Perfection. I can’t even count how many times I’ve played it. It’s been my #1 best game of all time for nearly 30 years now.

Turrican is one of my favorites too, while I haven’t played through it as many times and don’t have it on my all time top 10 I can still jump in just about any time and enjoy it.

Most Vertical Shmup games

I love Sega Genesis era shmup such as Truxton, Twin Cobra, Fire Shark. I Also love Psikyo and Cave Arcade Shmups.
I love cave, really wish mushihimesama futari 1.5 was backwards compat, then again I'd happily buy a re-release at this point. (Hopefully city connection pick it up)

In addition to a lot of the classics already posted here, for me: Dead Space 2.

I went from renting it back in 2011 and returning it early because my nerves couldn't take it, to playing through it maybe five or six times and buying it three or four times.

The design philosophy behind that game seems to be: never take the player out of Isaac's shoes. Super immersive in sound, UI, world design, gameplay flow, lighting...absolutely an all-timer for me

Nintendo Switch is king of these type of game in my opinion

I have to agree here, Switch is like a consolidation system for all of those games.

I used to have more of these. As I get older there are some games that I thought wouldn't get old that I can't seem to be arsed with anymore. But of course there are some that if they haven't died yet, they've proven they NEVER will. Sonic 2 is at the top of this list, along with:

Turtles in Time
Ocarina of Time
Link's Awakening
SMW
Mario 3
Starcraft 1
Ikaruga

Doom Eternal

I used to play MGS1/2/3 over and over again. That game is like crack.

I haven't touched it for 10 years now however. If they were to remake the games then I'll be down to replay

Metroid Fusion. I've beat the game at least once per year since it came out on pretty much any device that I can get it to play on(virtual console or homebrew).

Other games I have beaten to death are:
Metroid Zero Mission
Resident Evil 3 & 4
Uncharted 1
God of War series

All mainline Halo games especially Reach
Bethesda RPGs
Bioshock 1&2
Yup, I don't usually replay games, but I have done all of these at least twice. Also, Mass Effect trilogy and most of Lucasarts p&c adventures, especially Grim Fandango which I have replayed at least three times.

I don't think I've ever beat a game over and over again unless it was the story mode on a fighting game. That used to be to get the character unlocks and the endings.

So I guess...Super Smash Bros take the cake.

DotT is sublime. I replayed it last year, for the first time since mid-90s and it still works. Puzzles are great even when they tend to get absurd and seemingly random, but it made me happy to see that humour still holds up.

Whenever i feel the need for some proper PC designed FPS action, you can't beat FEAR with a little mod called Mmod to make the weapons even punchier. Set it on the highest difficulty level, never use slow-mo and you have some unparaleled fps firefights. Makes you wonder why in the flying fuck is this type of action never replicated since. Its almost 20 years now. Why doesnt any team want to make something like this ? Something that plays like this ? Why are they all content in making just serviceable and mundane weapon combat that is the same as every other game. Bunch of devs without imagination and ambition

Dragon's Dogma
Fallout 3/New Vegas/4
Elder Scrolls Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim

Hitman is a little different since it's more about replaying the levels, not exactly playing it in order again.
