Not a bad list actually. Nice to see Grim Fandango, Actraiser, Phantasy Star II and Day of the Tentacle on there.

I see you abbreviated Baldur's Gate to just Baldur, since Baldur is a really unique string... but isn't it the same for "Fandango" much less "fandan?" Think of the 7 keystrokes you could have saved.

Or maybe you typed out the full name because they'res another game with fandango in it. if so, let me in on this secret knowledge!

I always have 'Grim Fandango' copied so I can easily ctrl + v it of course, doesn’t everyone do that with their favourite game?
Or maybe I just love to spell Grim Fandango.
Fandango.
Grim.
Mmmmhrr..

I'm going to test your theory by hitting CTRL+V and then leaving it here no matter what it is:

Shenmue II (Dreamcast - PAL)

...

Well, I'll be damned. Good call.

Matt_09 -- Here's the list along with a bit of their intro, to give it some context:
We have strong views on what we believe to be the greatest games ever made. These are all uniquely different games, on a variety of different platforms, released at completely different times. We hold them in equally high regard--they're the absolute best of the best, each one a genuine classic that can still be appreciated today or whenever. And here, in GameSpot's weekly Greatest Games of All Time feature, we will present them to you, letting you know what was so great about these games to begin with and shedding some new light on them at the same time.

Thanks a lot man that was pretty damn awesome of you. Something interesting to read whilst i sit in work hungover and feeling like satan has shat his unholist of loads in to my guts.

Why the fuck do these websites do this shit? All it does is piss people off because they left out Obscure Game X, Nobody Gave A Fuck Y, or Limited Print Z.

It appears to be a weekly feature. Don't bitch because your favorite game is not up there. They not going to immediately list the obvious ones. They'll list game "X" sooner or later.

Ahhh, thought it was THE definitive list

I love these lists because my favorite game (OoT) is always on there and gets the credit it deserves. Truly a work of art.

Hmm, they don't have Mario 64, but they do have Rayman 2?
They have Quake and Counterstrike, but don't have Doom, Goldeneye, Half Life, Halo?
The only racing game is Wipeout XL? No Outrun, Sega Rally, Gran Turismo, Mario Kart, F-zero, Waverace or Daytona?
In comparison they have whole bunch of fighting games including Streetfighter, Tekken and Samurai Showdown, and yet they still see fit to include Mortal Konbat II?

I'd like to see a GAF top 100 list.

Or at least a topic where we argue over compiling such a list.

It would be very interesting to see some of the arguments that would ensue.

"Resident Evil 4 is the greatest game of this or any other generation!"

"Nothing tops Halo!"

"Sorry, but Super Mario Bros. 3 is and always will be #1..."

"Tetris is immortal."

Well, for a moment there, I thought they were going to award the top spot to Serious Sam or some other budget game....

I could never get into NES Bionic Commando back in the day. So many gamers proclaim it to be one of the best games ever made makes me want to buy a NES and a Bionic Commando cart to see if I can appreciate the game now that I am older.

Pathetic. You, not the list. There is no rank. It is an impcomplete list. Gamespot editors simply chose a great game to discuss. Some games are great for different reasons. I think it's fucking fantastic. Stop complaning.

No metal gear games, and rayman 2(a game nobody would give a shit about if it hadn't come to the DC) over mario 64? Screw this list, and screw lamespot.

Truly awesome game and the inspiration for my nickname. Even today it feels so unique. I wish they had left in all the original nazi references, but it is still extremely obvious even with all the images cut out. The story was really cool for its time, but that part of the game is showing its age.

Just a warning though, the game is extremely hard to get into. It is one of those games where you will find the first few levels more difficult than the later levels because it takes a lot of time to get used to the game's mechanics. Once you master the mechanics it becomes a ton of fun.

I dont know why they listed Everquest over Ultima Online. UO did things 7 years ago that most of todays mmogs dont even attempt. It was the first truly interactive online world.

Semi OT, but I went back and played Actraiser recently. It wasn't nearly as awesome as I remembered. I used to love it. Now, not so much.

Probably because Everquest was the first to get it right and to this day is still a juggernaut of a MMORPG. Other games have tweaked their controls and HUD but it pretty much is the standard most others have copied as well.

And seriously, Ultima Online was very broken.

Some of the replies to this thread prove the theory that you can't please everybody all of the time.

I'm not saying I agree with their choices though... They're definitely a bit off.

I just dont think there can ever be a 'best of' list since they're all so different.

However, why is Michael Jackson beating out Rayman?

This isn't a definitive "list" of the best games. It's a weekly feature where the folk at Gamespot talk about a great game every week. These games are not ranked in relation to each other, and games that people think should be mentioned may very well be written about in future updates.

READING IS FUN!

Counter-strike, Super Mario Bros. 3, Diablo, Tecmo Bowl, Ocarina of Time, Starcraft: Brood War, Oregon Trail... I like this list. Heck, Blitz and no Madden, I like this list :lol

No, the replies don't prove that at all. All it does prove is that people can't read, yourself included.

Every single person in here that has complained about a game not being listed? Or about some mythical ranking that doesn't exist? Please read GameSpot's intro, or one of the many "Learn to read!" replies in this thread. Then, when you're done with that, simply brand yourself an idiot, and kindly leave the thread. Thank you.
