Hideki Yasuda (JP Analyst) - The Sony Group may see PS5 as a failure and the envisioned goals are unattainable.

Sony's focus appears more on shareholder value and profitability, leaving uncertainty about the purpose of their PlayStation business. Despite lower sales figures, Sony remains profitable with PS5, suggesting a strategic shift to address shortcomings with PS6. The ambiguity in their management strategy, including the departure of former CEO Jim Ryan, raises concerns about future business impacts despite Sony's strong position in recurring revenue models across music, films, and anime.

Currently, it feels like the Sony Group is more focused on stock prices and profits than on the way they conduct their business. Indeed, from an investor's perspective, a company that makes profits is a good company, but it's unclear why they are in the PlayStation business.
In a hearing with the Sony Group, they expressed the view that "even if PS5 sales are lower than PS4, it's not a problem because we're making a profit." Personally, I was astonished by this response because it suggests the notion that "as long as there's profit, anything goes."
The likely background to this view is that Sony Group's envisioned goal of PS5 surpassing PS4 significantly and overwhelming Xbox is now seen as unattainable. Moreover, rather than pouring unnecessary capital into what can be considered a failed PS5, it would be better to make fundamental improvements with the PS6. Thus, it is reasonable to scale back tactics to a level that won't disappoint investors, as long as there are profits, criticism will be avoided.
In the business briefing, I couldn't understand whether the goal of the game segment was to make money, to develop the PlayStation business, or to win globally even at the expense of Japanese users. It seems necessary to redefine the purpose of the game business.
As an investment target, I highly value the Sony Group. The company is a model of efficiency and asset-light management, and they have established a recurring business with music, movies, and anime copyrights. The overall growth potential of their business is high, making it a stock worth investing in for the long term. That is why I can't help but feel ambiguity in the management's decision to allow Jim Ryan (former CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment), who was responsible for the confusion in the game business, to leave amicably. I fear that such vague management strategies may impact the company's business in the future.

Not really surprising seeing journalists in Japan have a negative view of Playstation. The PS5 is on par with PS4 console sales, but not with Japan. The Japanese have somewhat rejected this generation and have fully embraced Nintendo. Regardless, Playstation are making record profits and will continue to do throughout this generation

I mean… yeah? Isn’t the point to make a profit? “anything goes” seems like a stretch. You make repeated bad decisions and the profit is gone.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
would be very funny if console no longer exist in the future.

You either buy a very expensive hardware = PC

or a very cheap low performance handheld = Switch

to play video games lol

Gee, I wonded what massive and transformative change happened this Gen compared to the previous one..
Shhh, we don't talk about that in this part of the world.

I remember Shuhei mentioning that Sony executives questioned him about the necessity of creating their own games. Shuhei had to persuade them of the importance of First Party game production.
Asking by itself isn't bad. If they stil refused to understand, then it's a problem

This is dumb. It is absolutely necessary to transform the business. And the goal is develop the business and make money, and win globally. The reality is that Japan is a much smaller player in this industry that it used to be.

How any human on Earth can say the PS5 is a failure or is failing after reading these stats only means they are acting stupid or being paid off by someone like a MS to spew propaganda.

And it's even dumber when people say Sony will leave the console business after the PS6.

Analyst: PS5 is a clear failure, and Sony needs to move on to the PS6.

Doing great business and making record breaking profits aren't enough. This is why the world's economy is being run into the fucking ground.

With that lackluster library in comparison with PS4 and even PS3...

In fact most of the reason I gonna upgrade for PS5 are my PS4 game catalogue. Make me wonder if PS5 wasn't BC ready the numbers would be lower.

99% of my time has been on a remaster and PS4 games. GoT, TLOU2, Demon's Souls, and God of War.

For me, Sony hardware is amazing. I love the PS5, the Dualsense is quite possibly the best standard console controller of all time. PSVR2 is an awesome headset and it's controllers are the best VR controllers. The Portal is baller as shit and convenient as hell. I absolutely adore current gen playstation hardware,

It's the games. Clearly there are some absolute gems but Sony is definitely embracing wokeness in first party stuff and the hyper-cinematic games just bore me to tears, and then we have Concord... :messenger_expressionless:

AA / 3rd parties for me. There is absolutely no shortage of great games to play but they don't get the love they deserve from the gaming community at-large.

Also, props to Sony for funding the Village and RE4 PSVR2 modes. Sony could have it all if they moved past emulating Netflix grief porn/inserting social issues and focused more on actual gameplay. It's so dumb.

It's because of their obsession with growth for the sake of it. Not busting down the doors and making MORE money every single year, selling MORE console, etc? Company is a dumpster fire, bad investment, sell it all and burn it down.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
He maybe reaching but some of his reasonings are sound.
We have all asked what the fuck are they doing and are told their Profits are the highest they've ever been, Sony is winning.
Which is great, but why does it feel like we're losing.
Going into another generation with a unsatisfactory userbase isn't good regardless of what profit you're making now.
You've just got higher to fall.

That's on you though, i've played and gotten a ton of sony games, third party exclusives are important too. Just like the PS2 era.

This is one of the best generations ever for me, even games that were considered shovelware in the past (Genshin, Honkai, ZZZ etc.) are much higher quality in the PS5 gen. Honestly, what PS4 did was increase your expectations of everyone because Sony games were so high quality, but i always played more than Sony first party games, and i still got em with Returnal, Demons Souls, Ratchet, GoW Rag, Spiderman 2

Ask yourself....... Why do the games that I dislike sell so much worldwide?

I hope you can get to the answer in short order and fully understand that answer.
