How can WE help Gaf be a better, faster source of video game information and news?

I would like to contribute more threads and news but I'm usually so far out of touch with what's happening that either someone else has mentioned it already or it doesn't feel relevant anymore.

There was a split a couple (?) years due to some kind of controversy.

Basically Neogaf was an insanely busy forum but also very leftist in ideology. I remember nearly getting a ban for looking at Gamergate neutrally back in 2014 despite a clean record.

Anyways....

After whatever the controversy was here, all the really looney leftist types left here and gone on to make ResetEra.

So now Neogaf is more chill and open and ResetEra keeps to what was once GAFs authoritarian views and policing prior to the exodus.

Oh I guess some mods were found out to be pedos or something too.

Unfortunately, the game industry, much like the rest of tech, Hollywood, academia, etc prefer the 'wokies' so they all said adios to GAF and joined the ResetEra crowd.

I'm sure someone else could it explain it better though.

The thing is that ResetEra is basically what NeoGaf 1 was, the wokies, insiders and the industry personnel moved there, the former was the very thing why Gaf became popular in the first place.

NeoGaf 2 is the redemption arc, we unfortunately won't have people from the industry nor even insiders as it used to have, perhaps not even 1/100, but I wouldn't trade for the previous Gaf.

When you have GAF banning Tim Dog for being a "fake insider", when he is known to talk to MS executives and gets them on his stream with Dealer, but yet OsirisBlack who trolled this forum with fake insider bullshit for weeks, and still isn't banned, then the mods need to take it on the chin as well for pulling some bizarre moves.

Yeah for real, look at his post, look at all the positive reactions.

Look at my response, and one person laughing at me. This forum has a disconnect from reality problem.

Tim Dog was banned for acting as completely freerun troll, but even so, he was right and fact that many users here joked on anyone who tought correctly that the XSX would be the most powerful, gladly I've seen way more "equilibrium" on that mods will order to halt any console warring or BS (Previous Gaf would be banning people for believing on Microsoft).

SonyGaf nickname will remain because of the users still mostly being on pro Sony and laughing on many positive posts regarding the company and its products, that's why ResetEra will have a more friendly look (and BTW even they are called Pro Sony).

Highly recommend https://nichegamer.com/

Regardless of the name, it's not niche news or anything.

Thanks! Added.

Going to wind down and try to get to bed now. But keep them coming guys. I'll add more in the morning or whenever I get the time. Lots of sites so far that are even new to me so it's already working! Hopefully some of you see some stuff you find interesting and start making threads. :goog_horns:

They're good. I like them but there was some controversy over people there plagiarizing other sites. Still they're one of my favorite gaming news sites.

I like one of the writers there. Can't remember her name but she's MtF and she broke the news about that E3 doxing. Fwiw she's got an account here. I just can't remember her name but I think it ends with -berg.
Her name is Sophia Narwitz, and she's not at Niche Gamer anymore unfortunately. The founder of the site, who was the one responsible for the plagiarism, acted really shady with the whole E3 leak thing so she left. For what it's worth, the guy stepped down as EIC and only operates as the owner now, but the shadow of that whole thing still hangs over the site.

It's always good to see so many people want to get actively involved, but actually the site has already been on an upward trajectory for a long tome now. When I first joined the site a couple of years back, the number of threads with posts from within the past 24 hours only reached halfway down the first page. A year later we would often get halfway down the second page. I haven't been keeping an eye on it for a while, but checking just now it looks like we are already well into page 4 in terms of recently updated threads:

Keep up the great work everyone. Together we can build a chilled (and sane!) place to discuss games.

Someone was saying more female members would benefit the forum, maybe offer a month of gold free if you can verify you're a new female member??

That would make the place more attractive in general and thus devs / industry people IMO.

He was banned fairly, for very silly attempts at bullshitting his "credentials" using cut-off screenshots that didn't show anything, then totally misrepresenting his interactions with the mod team and finally going mental with a meltdown. It has nothing to do with whether the leaks he backed were more or less accurate than someone else's.

I didn't verify Osiris, and regardless, someone having a verified connection to the industry isn't a guarantee of any intel being legitimate. People believed what they wanted to believe at the end of the day. Put it to rest.

Alot can be done to better the quality of this forum but the below abolsutely pisses me off no end

FFS STOP POSTING OR SHARING TWEETS OR POSTS FROM OBVIOUS CONSOLE WARRIORS OR TROLLS ON THIS FORUM

All you are doing is giving them more exposure and making Gaf an extension of their social media reach.

I was reading the which site is best thread and it seems like there is a lot of sentiment that while people love the way GAF is run, they feel it could be better with gaming news and such. Which is the only reason they go elsewhere even when they'd rather not. So, I was thinking. Since GAF has the most important thing already covered, a strong foundation in fair and open discussion and sane moderation, then how can we as a community better build upon that strong foundation and strengthen the areas people wish where better?

I've always lived by "Be the change you want to see." So, how do we help equip people to do that? IMO, With more knowledge.*

So I figured I'd start a thread to be sort of a resource to people who are looking for ways they can contribute.

Here we can post all of the ways we contribute and how we do that so others can see and learn. For instance, if you are someone who likes to post or find new video game news, what sources do you watch? Do you reach out to devs? What is the best way to do that? etc. Some of these things might seem like common sense to you. But perhaps it could help.

If you guys think this is a good idea and If this thread stays active, I'll try to update the OP and make a list of the various game related news sources that are posted that people can watch and the methods to do so. More eyes on more sources, niche or otherwise, should translate to the news being posted on GAF faster so that discussion can happen here rather than elsewhere.

* To be clear. I am talking about providing more sources for info that people may not know about. There are all kinds of websites out there that keep up to date and are dedicated to certain niches and may have info that people here might find interesting. So sites dedicated to Retro gaming news, indie gaming news, PC hardware news, etc. There may even be some twitter feeds from devs or industry peeps that actually post stuff. It might seem like common knowledge but perhaps a condensed list of sites people know of that are actively putting out new info would put more eyes on them. Which would therefore lead to more opportunities for threads to be made about those topics that those posters care about here on GAF.

So far posters in this thread have given their sources of info for:

Siliconera

Great initiative. Anything I can do to help, let me know. We've surged quite a bit in activity since the beginning of the reconstruction, by the way:

p1irLdt.png

Over 5,000 posts per day on average now (and over 11,000 reactions per day, which would account for a lot of filler responses). GAF is quite popular again, but I agree that it'd be great to see more niche/indie coverage and discussion, and branching back out a bit generally gaming-wise. That'd restore us as the go-to nexus of gaming discussion once more.

The only thing I can ask really is that this forum doesn't go full leftist. I am liberal but even I draw a line when it comes to the way left people. Plus I can listen to the other side and either have a conversation or just read it and move on. Other than that just post what the current news is and game info. Also maybe more OT's for games and such. I refer here for a lot of games that I may need help on or some info.

I'll all for new ideas and challenging opinions, as long as it's done in a respectful manner.

To be honest I feel a little guilty that I'm always commenting on threads but never creating my own, especially when I notice something particularly news-worthy.

I think the great purge took that with them.
On the crazy right there is 4chan and Stormfront, and on the crazy left there is Tumblr and Resetera.
GAF should be right in the middle.
And by that I mean laughing at both the Nazis and SJWs in equal measure.

You need to have incentives like stupid internet point system if you want that. But with it will come a lot of shitty threads.

The thread isn't about how can we lure industry peeps here. It's about how can we better equip our fellow members to be able to find info from sources that we can post so it gets posted here faster.

And other ways people can come up with to contribute.
It doesnt help that members here regurgitate fanboy troll crap from Twitter by well known trolls who's aim is to spread misinformation and FUD.

Until posting shit from people like TimDog and his ilk here on these forums or atleast make posting such nonsense a bannable offense, the types of members we attract and the quality of discussions will continue to take a nosedive.

This is a good site to source articles that focus strictly on games and gaming news like the old school print days. No political drama and click baity shite.

I think it would be good if...

1) People posting news wouldn't give it their own slant in the titles.
2) people reacting to someone posting news in an pragmatic style not attacking the OP just because the news doesn't fit one's own agenda.

Just stop the console warring a bit.

We definitely want to crack down on this, and turn it back into a semblance of normalcy. Please continue to report any sensational “baity” thread titles or “honeypot” OPs, and we will adjust accordingly.

Fantastic OP VlaudTheImpaler VlaudTheImpaler .

Execute the plan of offering a faster source of video game information, why can't GAF be the place for video game news? It's essentially a gaming forum.

This thread

Is a perfect example of what I wrote about last night. The same rules don’t apply to both sides. Pro-PS5 speculation is “absolutely right, stuff we already knew,” but Pro-XsX speculation is “not credible, blind fanboyism.”

People are still waving the Crytek Guy interview around like a bible.

It doesn’t bother me that the XsX might be better than the PS5. It doesn’t bother me that the PS5 might be better than the XsX, the hypocritical shifting in any conversation regarding the two consoles is what bothers me.

As some will remember, we had a Volunteer program way back when that tackled this same thing. Way back when we had less than 100 people online. Boy has times changed. https://www.neogaf.com/threads/neogaf-volunteers-initiative-sign-up-beta.1468935/

A lot has changed for me since that however. I have 3 kids, youngest walking now. My gaming habits have changed, now doing more PC gaming. And I play more games now than before... probably because my interactions in talking about games has changed.

I honestly think people like Mista Mista IbizaPocholo IbizaPocholo cormack12 cormack12 do a fine job with putting up threads. What threads are popular is determined by the entire site, and I don't think simply putting up more threads. You have to have a group of interested members.

I think the baseball threads are a good example. While not highly popular, it does have dedicated members to keep the conversation going.

Personally I'd like to see more "play together" gaming in NeoGAF. However my schedule currently is too chaotic to lead that.

If members want more timely news threads posted, perhaps coordinating with members who already work hard on the issue is the start. Ask Mista Mista how you can help him. Perhaps he will lead that along with the other OG members

I mean, let’s be real guys. After the split in forums, Reeee took all of the people and industry dwellers with them. We can do our best to try and cultivate that kind of environment again, but what’s done is done. Just try to enjoy it for what it is now.

REE also lost the vast majority of insiders as well

the witch hunt mob culture just made insiders move on to a platform they could control, Twitter.

I don’t blame them tbh

not sure if they’ll ever return

I’ll separate gaming forum into 2 parts.

Official: for announcements and official stuffs with a strict anti war policy.
Just a real summary ,no rumours, no bullshit.

Discussion:
Everything else, fanboys war extravaganza.
Rumours, personal views etc..

I don't mind guiding anyone that is willing to contribute instead of just engaging in useless console war

I personally enjoy making threads that contains news because one, I grew up doing it and I love it. And two, I want GAF to always be up to date

Recently I noticed many people also make threads but unfortunately they just post a link which is something that pisses me off but I appreciate the effort at least

The people that have been always with me daily are IbizaPocholo IbizaPocholo cormack12 cormack12 and Bullet Club Bullet Club .. They do their best and I consider them my compadres

Not ideal. You're going to separate the people by doing this and thats a bad idea

The idea is to arm more people with sources that they might not have known existed. So that more people could possibly find things they are interested. If we have more members of this community finding those things then there are more opportunities for them to post threads about those things that interest them here. Therefore there are more chances that other members will see that thread and find something they might find interesting and create discussion.

Just calling for a proper forum etiquette:

1. Use search before making a thread or a post
- there are embarrassingly often many threads of the same fresh topic (all on the first page, even).

2. Use multi-quote instead of making multiple consecutive quote posts in a thread.

"I'm on phone" is a poor excuse for both points.

Allow threadmakers to block neo members from posting in their threads, that alone would increase the quality of this place, reduce the shitposting, FUD spreading and Astroturfing.

It'd have to start with getting rid of warriors derailing every single thread.

We can have a thread for example "New cod to be 4k/60fps. And we end up with "Ps5 sucks".

That makes sense. I was more talking heavy info days (think E3). Having a few people dedicate to a Conference allows others to take a break, also not have multiple threads of the same announcement.

Last year thats what we did. Felt the coverage was fantastic. Mista Mista with much of the heavy lifting.

Tho I guess we don't need to worry about Conferences right now lol.

Good list btw

The site tools allow for people to ignore posters. Ignore posters that are warriors. Hope in time maturity wins over "new car smell" freedom of posting. Because perm bans sucks.

Doing great so far guys! Still looking to fill in the gaps in the list categories if anyone has any.

I'm specifically trying not to fill them out myself because I'd like for this to be a community effort to cultivate community interaction.

Ive been lurking awhile but only recently joined in dec. The forum has gone to shit since the spec reveals.

Sadly it only influences more members to sign up for warring, not partaking in actual discussions.
