That's scary as all fuck. Hoping for a good recovery afterwards. The mirrored sensation thing is .. what the fuck, brains?

As a relatively young person who suffers from (sometimes scarily) high blood pressure, reading the OP was the stuff of nightmares.

Hope your recovery goes well, OP.

crazy that the doctors didn't immediatly recognise this, in the UK there's quite a lot of knowledge around strokes i feel, there are adverts on TV telling you how to recognise if someone is having one etc.

I hope you recover well and everything is ok.

That ER is making me absolutely furious. Bush league assholes, at least you're properly getting care now OP and that's what matters.

Even with my low opinion about doctors, I was still shocked to read about the doctors dismissing your symptoms. Even someone who's a dumbass about medical shit like me would have alarm bells about symptoms like yours. But I didn't realize until after I read your story that you're a woman. ): Stories about strokes/heart attacks make me default to men in my head. As a woman, no wonder they didn't want to listen to you. :/

Honestly, I've been needing to go to the doctors for like almost three months now for my endometriosis symptoms but have been avoiding it because nearly any time I try to explain my symptoms, the doctors (all female!) dismiss me and give me shitty birth control. My problems aren't as serious as yours obviously, but next month I'm gonna bite the bullet and try going to a Planned Parenthood. Maybe PP will listen to my problems and give me something that actually controls my shitty hormones. ):
I was actually supposed to bite the bullet and do it this month, but I got a cold that lasted over a week long, and with the holidays fast approaching now I'm like "fuck it" and pushing it off until January.

Whether or not you think doctors will listen to you or not, everyone should still try to get insurance if they don't already have it! In Washington state it's as easy as going to the health plan website and calling a number -- and even if you miss the Dec 23 deadline, you can still apply later and get coverage starting in February. Not that you should use that as an excuse to put it off even longer than you should, mind.

OP, I really hope in the long run you get better and recover from this. ): Wish you luck!

God damn I am so pissed on your behind Mineshaft_Gap. I had a similar 'in gore the woman because she's a woman' experience, with gallbladder pain. Went to thensure ER three times only for them to send me home with 'heartburn' pain. Last time I went a female doctor was on call and rushed me to emergency surgery because my gallbladder had almost burst. She saved my life.

I should have sued. I really hope you do. Because doctor will not change their behavior and start taking women in pain seriously until it starts hitting them in pocket book.

Edit: also if you do make a crowd fund campaign, post it in GirlGAF discord, I'll get it spread around. Your story is easily verifiable, and you definitely need the help.

Oh my God

You Just described my nightmare. I have a twitch that I snap my own neck constantly.

Since my neurology teacher saw me doing he told me "you are going to dissect you vertebral artery if you keep doing this".

I trying to do less, but sometimes I can't control. Once I had a huge headache and I almost went to the hospital, fearing the worst. It was nothing though...yet.

Good luck to you and I hope for the best

So not worth it

My 33 year old colleague had one and his doctor didn't diagnose his symptoms (lack of feeling in the left side of his body, numbness) as a stroke either.

It's the age, I believe, that makes it unlikely to be a stroke and they misdiagnose based on that.

oh god. oh god. oh god. Well, I know what I will never do again. Let that chance be almost non-existent, that is still too high, geez.

All the best wishes for you OP.

this is terrifying but.. the type of health insurance i could afford would not cover this anyway

hope you get well soon OP

Was it a TIA or did your brain took any damage from it?

My brain took damage. Some of which according to the neurologists will heal rather quickly. Others may take months or longer.

Fun fact: showering sends such odd mixed messages to my brain that it makes me not want to shower. Imagine half of your body enjoying a nice hot shower and the other half feeling coolish/warm temperature water. It's utterly bizarre and the first shower I took after having my stroke made me freak the fuck out. Luckily the hospital had Ativan on tap. 50MG of delaudid and 10MG of Ativan knocked me on my ass but I was having a really hard time after my first shower.

I don't have the same reaction now but it's still really weird feeling. I took a hot bath the other day and I felt pretty good afterward but I only felt the hot water on my left side.

It's all just so surreal.

Yeah, and even as a physician I didn't knew it was a thing until I became a radiologist.
And it's rare, but all it takes is one time, so yeah, stop that and be careful about chiropractic.

Mineshaft, how are you movements? Despite the stroke you were able to drive and even write.
I really hope you can recover 100℅.

Have you tried playing games since then? It could be good to work your hand/brain coordination back up.

It really is weird how doctors do seem to let those prejudices get in the way of a diagnosis. I was misdiagnosed as anaemic and given sugar-coated iron tablets when in reality I had developed type 1 diabetes. It was exams time at university and the fucker just though I was trying to get out of them. I ended up making an official complaint and he got hauled up in front of the local medical authority and the practice ended up in the shit.

My brother brought me my PC (mini ITX i7/GTX1080) and monitor for my nearly month long hospital stay. I had my ROG Swift on the tray table since for the majority of the time I didn't need to use it to eat due to being fed through the core pack.

I used it to talk to girlgaf and browse the Internet and look at YouTube videos of food. I was too depressed to play games. It would have been a great time to catch up on my back log.

Someone I knew used it to keep their brain warmed up and work their fingers back up from a similar situation. Could be worth a try.

Yeah. This just reminds me how US is the most fucked up developed country (those costs...). Also yeah strokes can happen at any age. My friend died of stroke 6 years ago when he was 20. And he had absolutely massive stroke. He finished eating, stood up from the table, walked couple of meters and fell down to the floor dead.

I hope you make a full recovery and get back to the way you were fully before your stroke, gaming helps a lot my nephew has been ill since he was a baby, but now he is twenty, still fighting and using gaming as a focus and motivation. So make sure you play the things you enjoy most and it will help even a little. We are very lucky here in Scotland with our NHS, and it must be a terrible strain and worry for uninsured people such as yourself. So chin up, and get better asap.

That's terrifying, OP. I hope things work out and you won't have to pay too much... America's health system is insane.

Its genuinely terrifying to me that you can describe a symptom such as "i cant feel the left side of my body" to a Doctor and have them be like "NBD, go home and drink a milkshake". Fucking hell.

Get well soon, OP.

The worst thing is doing millions of tests to just find out what the problem is. I am sorry OP. Hope you feel better now.

Pretty awful. Glad I read this though so thanks for sharing.

Place 1 seems stupid as hell and place 2 is exactly why medicine shouldn't be for-profit. Ridiculous to run that many tests.

I seriously had a panic attack reading that, so you can't be that much of a shit writer.

I hope you never have to experience a situation like that again.

Get your shit America with your fucking health care. Greatest country in the world? lol.

Glad that you are "fine" OP. I am mid 20 myself and will watch out for anything, but I have something like this already behind me. My intestines were entangled for a few days and I couldn't take a shit. Wasn't allowed to eat and only was able to vomit. Worst pain ever and after a few days I told my mum that I cant take it anymore and that I want to. 5 minutes later the doctor came in and said I need immediately operation. They took out about 30cm of my intestines and now I have a big scar on my tummy. They also stapled the wound cause there was no other option.

Get healthy OP!

Good luck OP, hope it all works out. I really feel lucky to be in Canada and not have to worry about medical costs like that.

Finish teh story!!!

Edit- Thank God for the NHS in the UK.

What a fucking farce you have in the States. Get a bill from the hospital for an emergency check up?

FUCK

THAT!

Not sure why the first place did a barium swallow?? Kind of strange decision making there. Sounds like you are doing much better now at least.

I've just spent 5 days in a hospital in UK. Waiting for a diagnosis still, but I'm grateful to have had access to all of the care I needed in a reasonably quick, safe manner and without worrying about the cost of it all. It's hard enough to be sick anyway.

Oh my....you have really been through it haven't you.
I pray that you are over the worst of it.
Do you have family/friends around you to support you?

Please, please take care of yourself.

What happens in the US if you have no insurance and no money?
Do they just leave you to die?

Basically same as the OP...Go to Emergency Room, hope they treat you for the right thing before you die, declare bankruptcy (if your lucky), and then spend almost a decade rebuilding your credit.

If you got to the ER they have to treat you. They tend not to treat you well. Then they will hound you for the rest of your life for the 100,000 dollars you racked up on your two night stay and shove you out the door to see specialists...who won't see you unless you have insurance or pay up front, so you wait until your dying again and go to the ER...rinse repeat.

Based on the fact you have a desk job, I'm going to assume you aren't eligible for Medicaid.

I would look into what options your state provides for charity-based insurance that can rapidly cut down the cost. Obviously your credit isn't worth your health, but there's zero reason you should have to suffer financially for something that's not your fault.
