I don't believe for a second they won't kill the dog. The Emotioneering potential is just too strong.

Nope.
Dog will be the Sole Survivor. The final scenes will be a QTE moment where you take control of the dog and interact in button prompts to attack an enemy stabbing the shit outta the main character. You kill the attacker but it was to late.

They'll trick you into thinking that's what they're doing, but then they don't, the dog actually dies. But then it had puppies and there's puppies everywhere! Yaaaaay!

Instead, you die and the dog is sad because it lost its master ? I could see that happening. The dog being left sad instead of the character you control.
That would actually be much better for me than the recent FPS stories. The ending scene would be fun. It'd also be artistically interesting, it'd make a statement. The hilarity of the reaction that would ensue the game's release would also be a plus.

Dog lives, in the sequel they'll add in cats. And there will be multiplayer mode called dogz vs catz.
