Oh, Mat "hot take" Piscatella is back. He's doing is best to beat Pachter at his own game.
PS5 and Xbox Series X are getting all the headlines because they're the relevant hardware now. That's what being "the real story" means. Contrary to popular belief, people don't play sales.
Only because the other two are much more supply-constrained. If Sony and MS could fulfill the entire demand, there's no doubt the Switch would be a distant third, so that's irrelevant.

Yeah that $299 Mario Kart bundle was sorta quietly selling out within 10-15 minutes whenever it was posted like it was a new console or something.

They're literally both analysts. It's exactly the same job, just for different kinds of companies.
The hot take is that the Switch would be the "real story" when it's selling more just because the other two consoles are supply-constrained like hell. Speaking of jobs, it's not his job to decide what the "real story" is. That'd be those who decide the headlines, and apparently, they have decided that the real story is PS5 and Xbox Series X, which sounds about right.

Matt is working in sales tracking company so he knew what's exactly happening within the industry when it comes to sales numbers, Pachter on the other hand is doing a video game prediction as his hobby and got entirely wrong for almost every time as he predicted

Such a surprise when a console is literally the only non-obsolete (arguably) one freely available on the market.
The "real story" is that both PS5 and Xbox Series X had the biggest launch of their respective brands' history and they still evaporate as soon as they appear and will do so for several months. Which is what makes the headlines. For a reason.
Analysis of the gaming industry is literally part of Pachter's job at his company. It's no hobby. Gaming stock is a very hot commodity among investors, which is his job to advise. Incidentally, one may know the numbers, but ignoring the fact that two consoles are massively supply-constrained and one it to fabricate an alleged "real story" really doesn't inspire much confidence in their competence outside of simply reporting said numbers.

Their own consoles yes but they did not outsell most PS consoles outside of the DS.
Record breaking sales is set by the biggest selling hardware which is the hardest to break.
Nintendo Switch is going to break the record for the best and the fastest selling hardware in the US and that's the real story here than big launch of supply constrained hardwares(pretty much for all of hardwares launch story)

If you think PS5 (and likely Xbox Series X/s since we're talking exclusively about US) wouldn't break that record and then some if they weren't supply-constrained, you live in la la land.
We're in the middle of a pandemic and people are buying more of all forms of entertainment. In video games, they are buying what is available for purchase.
Apparently, those who actually decide what the "real story" is (which isn't a number-cruncher at NPD) think differently.

PS5 and XBS aren't going to break the record of Nintendo Switch monstrous sales in the US.
Nintendo Switch is going to outsell XBO in Q1 CY 2021 and PS4 in Q4 CY 2021 for the US market.

Yes. You live in la la land. As soon as supply stabilizes, the Switch is going to be left behind. The more time passes, the more its obsolescence becomes apparent, the less third-party devs will bother downporting to it.

Exactly, the companies they work for are different. Pachter analyses stock while Matt does not, and Matt will now have access to data that Pachter currently doesn't.
Yes the next gen systems are supply constrained but that wouldn't matter if Switch itself wasn't doing record breaking numbers. PS5 is supply constrained in the UK too but it still outsold the Switch there.
We'll see what the headlines are when the numbers come out. If Switch wins units and revenue that would definitely be a big story.

NPD's makes money from selling information, so no they don't give it all away for free. I agree that it would be great if they went back to sharing more data like they did in the 2000s, but they are not obliged to. NPD is a business.

You know Matt doesn't run NPD right? He's an employee, other companies don't pay him to do anything.
It may be that companies wanted less data shared, but is there any evidence to back that up or just a guess? Who do you think paid NPD to stop giving hardware numbers?
What data would you like NPD to show and why do you think them not giving you that data means the company has problems?

It makes sense. Which one is in stock, cheaper and has at this point a giant selection of software indie and exclusive? Switch also hasn't peaked yet it's been out for barely 3 years. PS4 has been around for close to 7.
He needs to read more about that during Wii/X360/PS3 era when the dead last console company in the US was pressuring NPD to stop giving out the number.
Not barely 3 years, in just a few months Nintendo Switch will be at 4th years.
Because it was prophesied that momentum will stop after the arrival of next gen consoles but it's doing record breaking number instead in reality.
