Matt Booty on Forza Reboot: "It’s amazing. It’s going to, again, reset the high bar for what simulation and competitive racing games can be."

https://neotizen.news/forza-motorsp...r-racing-sims-head-of-xbox-game-studios-says/
Head of Xbox Game studios Matt Booty sang high praises for Forza Motorsport, the upcoming eighth entry in the Forza Motorsport series, during an episode of Xbox’s official podcast.

“We just did a really comprehensive review of Forza Motorsport,” Booty said. “It’s amazing. It’s going to, again, reset the high bar for what simulation and competitive racing games can be.” Those are quite the complimentary words for Turn 10’s upcoming game.

Booty, who worked on racing games in the past, also offered insight into how making racing sims has changed, and how it hasn’t. He pointed out that yes, there are now “science-fiction-like” technologies like ray-tracing available, but certain things haven’t shifted as much. “A lot of the process about how a track is laid out, how teams work on different environments, the track surface, and the cars–a lot of that is still the same,” Booty said.

Forza Mortorsport is set to release sometime in Spring 2023 and will be coming to Xbox Game Pass at launch for both PC and Xbox. So far, Turn 10 has emphaszied how punched-up Forza Motorsport’s graphics and physics are. The studio has said it spent a lot of time improving tire collision models, leading to smoother, even more realistic drives.

So it looks like Matt Booty and his team just stopped by Turn 10 Studios to check the progress on the new Forza Rebooty, and have apparently been jawsmacked by what they saw. The promise of dynamic raytracing everywhere in real-time at 4k 60fps HDR may be a reality after all. It'll be great if the first racing sim made for the next generation consoles (and not cross-gen) ends up being a high bar to pass.

It's good to see Microsoft's top studio, with its most successful Ip, the face of Xbox, in tip top shape, brimming with confidence and competence that makes fans proud and trusting that they will deliver on the job. It's always good to see the brand that's the face of Xbox always shooting for the top and meeting ambitious goals. Who know where Xbox would be as a brand without it post-2011.

From the looks of it, Forza Motorsport is going to be an amazing game with great attention to detail, stunning graphics, while being a trend setter. Can't wait!

Forza Motorsport’s creative director has emphasised that the ray-tracing support announced last weekend will be present “when you are playing the game”.

In a possible dig at rival title Gran Turismo 7 – which only features the lighting effect in replays – Forza creative director Chris Esaki said on Thursday that developer Turn 10 wasn’t trying to “mislead” or be “funny with words”.

“Ray tracing is here. It’s on track and most importantly, it’s real-time gameplay,” he said during a live stream. “I really want to make that clear: when we say ‘on track’, it doesn’t mean it’s only in replays or it’s only in Photo Mode on track and we’re just being funny with words.

“We’re not trying to mislead you here. When you’re racing and when you are playing the game, ray tracing is on. We want to be really clear about that.

“When you’re playing it, it’s a level of immersion there that can be subtle at times but it’s a thing that really just pulls you into the visuals and experience unlike we’ve had before. When we talk about ray tracing, yeah, it looks amazing: it looks photo-real, it looks immersive, and you get that in gameplay – I want to be really clear about that.”

Forza Motorsports’ in-game ray tracing seems to encompass both reflections and ambient occlusion. However, Esaki clarified that the footage shown in the recent Xbox Showcase trailer features full global illumination – which calculates lighting bouncing off of surfaces onto other surfaces – which he stressed was set to feature in some “non-gameplay” sequences.

Just show us some more gameplay footage and start revealing the car and track list. They are talking more and more about the updated physics and simulation on there Instagram account which is good. I just want a clean unedited 10min 4K60HDR maxed out gameplay clip with no background music.

They have been talking about this for Series X and Series S(at 1080p) for months.

Q:          Does Forza Motorsport on Xbox Series X|S feature Ray Tracing?

A:           Forza Motorsport features real time ray tracing on track.

You think Xbox will have RT everywhere at 60fps 4K?
I don’t, that’ll be on PC, and even that might be tricky.

With DRS and/or reconstruction. Probably not native 4K 60 FPS with RT.

But with Turn 10 it's not a tall task, these guys were doing 1080p/60 FPS on the craptacular Xbox One hardware around the launch window as well.

Turn 10 has not only double down on this promise that Series X and S will have real-time ray tracing, but they done it at least 5 or 6 separate times. That's confidence you would never see from a studio who wasn't sure it was possible. We aren't talking about 343i here.

Yes. Probably dynamic 4K though.

They said Native 4K. Clearly they must have a reason to keep pushing the same promise, otherwise they would have fell back by now.

Don’t expect it until the details are official. MS is doing like everyone else, use their premium version to build hype, it’s no different than Sony talking about PS5 version when there is a PS4 version, MS is just fortunate enough to be able to use the PC version for hype since they aren’t stalling the PC release to get people to double dip.

You have a quote where they specifically say native 4K 60fps and RT everywhere on Xbox?

They didn't use any PC version what are you talking about? The early build ran on a Series X and they said after that they can get native 4j hdr 60fps with ray tracing, more than once since.

They have been aiming for that target since the game was announced in 2020 at the convention, when they showed the very early version of it (also running on Series X)

I don't think they said that. That's not a direct source.

The graphics themselves didnt seem to have gotten a big boost. It looks roughly on par with Forza Horizon if not a bit worse. It's a close circuit game unlike the open world Horizon so yes, I can definitely see ray traced reflections at 4k 60 fps.

What's a sad take. It's going to be the best looking game when it releases.

Well I guess we’ll see then, I have my doubts, RT is very demanding, there is no game doing that yet as far as I know.

Wouldn't the newest AAA game at its release that's current gen and one console only from a well respected developer be a likely candidate?

Turn 10 told everyone at the conference it was shown out that's what they are aiming for, that's why all the articles at the time say the same thing. They even doubled down in the other linked I posted from not too long ago at the second presentation they had to tell people they are "not playing tricks" on them. That was from the game director himself on Ray tracing, because people have been so sklpetical that it could be done.

You also forgot it's the first game with Ray Traced Global Illumination (used in replays and the garage only) on consoles which is insane and apparently it's doing it at 60fps. RTGI is the most demanding RT feature, it makes Ray Traced shadows, ambient occlusion and reflections look like child's play..

They've never said they were doing RTGI, so I assume that RT is more limited than that and does not replace all light sources on console. Still very impressive at 60fps. They've always been masters at building games to the hardware though, look at the visual fidelity they got on the VCR.

My feelings towards video game industry execs ranges from liking them where they have charisma (Moore, Tretton, Reggie, Iwata) to indifference (Layton, Spencer, Ryan).
But something about this guy really rubs me the wrong way. He's the only one I actively dislike (and Mattrick I guess).

Since native 4K without RT at 60fps is rare I don’t see how they could pull it off. I believe it when I see it.

I could be wrong, but as much as literally everyone is a suit at that level, booty seems to be ultra suited.

Even xbox fans have to agree, I don't know who he has dirt on but he should have been gone by now
