The people in the import thread say it has its flaws but it's still fun (and somehow better than SO4). It could have been something special if it had more polished according to a few users, but for now it's alright.
I think saying it needs to be more polished is really underselling how problematic the low budget was. It's FULL of technical bugs (glitchy animations, framerate drops, etc.), the graphics look like maybe an early PS3 game (some of the textures, such as grass, would be better off removed from the game), and even though it is only around 20-25 hours long, there is a lot of backtracking through areas you have already been. It isn't fun going through the same maps fighting the same enemies with colour swaps over and over, nor is it fun exploring barren towns with only a couple shops and no points of interest IMO.

Of course, the majority of the import OT seemed to enjoy the game, but the general reception among Japanese gamers has been very, very negative, and I am pretty damn certain SO5 will bomb critically in NA. No clue about how it will sell though...

Its a shame SO5 is not living up to expectations. I was really excited for it but now I'm wary.

Was there a game shortage or does the PS4 have an unusually high digital market?

That's an average of ~25-30% for Dark Souls 3 and The Division.

Dark Souls 3 is only ~20% (50k digital/260k launch total). The Division's ratio does seem high, but it could be due to the nature of the game (MMO-lite).

That's an average of ~25-30% for Dark Souls 3 and The Division.

Dragon Quest Heroes, Bloodborne, Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Metal Gear Solid V also had high ratios

Aren't those pretty high numbers for a sfc port?

As for SO5, the problem isn't just that it's short or that it's small. It's as small as if not smaller than games like zero no kiseki or majora's mask that center around a central hub, but still manage to be fresh, introduce new areas, and have a certain richness and detail that their size allows for ... Without any of the richness or attention to detail.

SO1 may have been small, but it's a top of the line sfc game in terms of production values, with a beautiful, detailed overworld, and a relatively original storyline for the time. SO5 has little that it can boast. There's no trade off. At best it's combat is fun and writing not offensive. And despite its size it still feels sloppy and rushed.

Looking at multi-platform titles it does seem to be higher than PSV. Gundam Breaker 3 for example, sold less at retail on PS4, but more digitally.

It is nice at least that the ps4 digitals are quite high. Higher digital ratio that psv seems quite good.

DS3 with digital 1st week sales is now on par with the first and second ones.

I don't know but according to Dengeki Quantum Break is at 3k too. Position 18.

http://dengekionline.com/soft/ranking/ranking.html

there was another case recently, I don't remember the name and actually don't have time to check previous threads

maybe forza 5 or halo 5, but if confirmed it should be strange that two times a XBO game charted in the M-C top 20 and not in Famitsu top 30

maybe Famitsu stopped tracking XBO games due to poor numbers?

That is an impressively high digital number for DS3.

Perhaps it is because Souls players value the day-one, minute-one community that surrounds these games on release. That's one romantic interpretation though....

EDIT: I didn't know it was a survey of players in Japan, that explains the unusual incrementing...

So I wanted to see how this year's multi-format Playstation titles compared for digital %. For PS4 Vs PSV the average was ~50% higher, for PS4 Vs PS3 ~200% higher. There was one release which had a higher % than the PS4 version, PSV Kamen Riders.

Holy shit those are epic digital sales for Dark Souls III and The Division. :D

So in the end Dark Souls III sold about the same of Dark Souls II... looks good for me. I know the installed base is not that important some times, but still with 2.7 million PS4 sold that's a great launch.

Pretty good sales here. Better than DS 2 on a smaller userbase, although the userbase hardly matter here because of the dedicated Souls fanbase.

Saga 2 did decent considering it was also available on the most popular platform in Japan (Smartphones).

It did better than Saga 3 on the Nintendo DS atleast.

Was there a game shortage or does the PS4 have an unusually high digital market?

That's an average of ~25-30% for Dark Souls 3 and The Division.

Dark Souls III ratio is 18,75%. A little higher from the average for first week (the game had a 80% first day sellthrough, that played its part too) and in the end it will fall to the usual 10-15% standard.

Division is indeed high (22,09% for 3 weeks), considering most of these sales came at first week.

maybe we can stop making fun of people expecting higher digital numbers for certain games around here
Right.

At the very least, the digital portion should be considered when discussing sales. That is all. They are just a relevant factor in the equation whether they end up being particularly high or not. Why that gets certain users into downplay and passive aggressive mode is beyond me. It really isn't necessary at all.

Chris1964

Sales-Age Genius
Yeah, I messed up looking up the original number.

It has become pretty obvious that digital doesn't save anything and unless there are extreme and special cases so far you'll end with 10-15% at best. Used market and price collapse lead in Japan.

Looking at multi-platform titles it does seem to be higher than PSV. Gundam Breaker 3 for example, sold less at retail on PS4, but more digitally.

That's not surprising. One of those platforms ships with 1GB of storage. The other ships with a few hundred.

Amazon contains screeshots of the game as well as some artwork.

As mentioned some days ago the game releases on July 16th and it takes place in the US.

The game has a lot of NFC stuff there, with the medals. They seemingly changed the combat too, wonder how will that play out.

To be fair, the blog didn't write bomba rate, but Danger Level. It's based on stock left, genre of the game, how time has passed since the release...
OhMyGod opted to translate it for bomba.

Well, that kinda explain it. He should put it on stock stats there rather than bomba as it can confuse others here lol.

The type of people who go out of there way to import this kind of game are obviously going to be more biased.

While this can be true, the opposite can be true as well. Importing is expensive, I'll tear a shitty game apart if it wastes my money and time.

Then again, (this is where I'm gonna get in hot stuff), as a western gamer with western values playing import rpgs for the last 20 years and reading the internet, I truly believe that the hardcore Japanese rpg gamer niche in Japan has terrible fucking taste and that the things they value positively like padding everything just for lengths sake or pandering shit like dating sub-systems are completely at odds with my own values (pacing, quality > volume; non-embarassing/pandering otaku shit). Note this has nothing to do with SO5 as I haven't played it yet and it might be a terrible game, might be a good game, no idea.

Puts me in a tough spot, since I can't trust Japanese reviewers at all. For Japanese rpgs I actually trust European reviewers the most for some reason like Eurogamer because they don't seem to give stuff too much of a pass, but they also don't have a hard on for hating Japanese/anime-styled stuff like a lot of US reviewers.
