Media Create Sales: Week 32, 2011 (Aug 08 - Aug 14)

So, is it weird to see Wii neck and neck with PS3 so consistently? I was under the impression that just a while ago it was called out for being dead etc with PS3 reigning supreme?

But I guess it might not last? Europe is finally getting good announcements but what's left for Japan? Zelda and Dragon Quest Collection and X, is that about it and nothing else?
Debunked: I didn't go back to check, but it may have something to do with the Wii's price drop in May. PS3 is still ahead YTD by a decent margin, and should see some modest baseline increase now, after its own price drop.

Nintendo systems always benefit a ton from holiday sales, and that could still help the Wii eek out a win for 2011 console totals.

Yeah, 3DS software sales are lower that expected. It also seems that 3DS didn't affect DSi nearly as much as anyone thought. This is making me less confident the 3DS will keep the top spot every week until Vita releases.

I wonder if it was a "DS family" thing.

DS + 3DS
7.8K + 196.1K
203.9K
Why would Media Create do that, though? It makes no sense.

Wii didn't price drop in Japan.

Why would that make you reach such a conclusion? I just don't understand the reasoning behind it :/

Actually, this is an interesting question.

Does anyone have a table of "First Week -> Second Week -> Third Week" price cut sales declines?

Because I assumed that the bulk of its baseline increase would come from it stealing DSi sales.

The problem with that line of thought is thinking that the people who are buying DSi/XL units this late in the generation would be the ones to purchase a system less than a year after launch.

And the problem with that is there isn't the usual cost disparity for folks who usually wait it out.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
What are the big releases of next week and next next week?

JoshuaJSlone said:
Right. Star Fox poped up from 38th place, and Nintendogs and One Piece dropped up from too low to tell. Probably more older releases will show up in the extended list.

But sure, some people got no games. We see that sometimes with launches of BC systems, and here too. Enough will just use their DS games, or mess about with AR games, Face Raiders, maybe get the Pokédex and Nintendo Video, maybe pick up Excitebike 3D.
they bought pokemon rumble :

86 + 32 + 15 + 12 + 10 = 155K, that's not really bad.

I believe pokemon wouldn't have sold nearly this much if not released with price drop

and probably some people got lesser known games or simply DS games as well (Kirby/Pokemon, etc)

A decent bit of new 3DS adopters picked up Zelda, cool.

Looking forward to seeing how the numbers pan out these next few weeks post price cut

You know, if you're separating fields with the "|" symbol, you probably don't need the hyphen in front of unit sales unless there were more returns than purchases.

Pretty decent sales for the 3DS, interested to see where it goes from here.
360 not going down without a fight, really showed the PS2 who's the boss this week.

Stealing from the gargantuan ~4K weekly base, you mean? I don't know, man, by 2052 3DS could have gained some traction..

Well, we could try to compare to PS3 Slim (redesign and price cut).

PS3 Slim (Sep, 2009)

Week 1: 151.783 (NEW: Gundam Senki, 177.868)
Week 2: 55.344 (NEW: None)
Week 3: 51.055 (NEW: Vesperia, 216,593)

Nintendo 3DS (Aug, 2011)

Week 1: 196.077 (NEW: Pokémon Rumble, 86.294)
Week 2: ?
Week 3: ?

Almost no price cut has had this type of effect. I think those are the most relevant in recent times:

PS3 WE2008 + price cut (49,980 -> 39,980) - 2007-11-11
2007-10-08

PS3 Slim + price cut (39,980 -> 29,980) - 2009-09-03
hf

PSP-2000 + Crisis Core (no price cut?) - 2007-09-13/20
2007-08-13

PSP price cut (20,790 -> 16,800) - 2009-10-01
2009-08-31

DS family price cut - 2010-06-19
hf

Wii price cut (25,000 -> 20,000) - 2009-10-01
hf

This took me way longer than I was expecting...

Wow. Still 19800Y? I suppose this gives Nintendo another card to play in Japan this year, if they want it.

Japan is a like that, I found out a couple of weeks back from Chris1964 that the PS2 is still 16000Y over there.

Solid start for 3DS hardware, if it has similar 2nd week decline to PS3 slim (-64%) it would be around 70k. I'd expect 3DS to be less frontloaded though, slightly offset by 3DS price dropping over Obon.

Uh, the price dropped on the 12th. You don't think its possible the 4 days before people could have bought original DS?

And whether or not it effects it at the start is irrelevant, its going to be gone eventually like every legacy system is.

Not only that. Releasing Inazuma Eleven, Goldeneye, family fishing and epic mickey(to a lesser extent) in a row really payed off for the wii. After weeks of seelling sub 8k, it just needed a couple of games to get up.

There's nothing for the wii this month, but next month with DQ collection and the musou sentai game, we will probably see the wii rise up again.

It's amazing how different the Western and Japanese markets have become this generation. The PSP is basically in the prime of its life in Japan but is all but left for dead in NA. I understand that there are cultural differences and everything but it still just blows my mind. Just look at how many PSP games are coming out in Japan next week!

IV wasn't released in the west due to bugs that were not fixed by the developers.

I know. I intended my comments about it doing better than IV and getting a worldwide release to be taken separately. I wasn't implying that IV's lack of worldwide release was down to sales.

IV sold the best in Japan, or so I've constantly read. With Wii already having a game in the series, a larger install base and a lacking line-up this year, I hope it can get even more sales than IV in Japan. Separately, I also hope the game doesn't suffer any problems that prevent a worldwide release for those that want it.

Either way I can read Japanese so I won't be waiting until next year to play it.
