The problem with that line of thought is thinking that the people who are buying DSi/XL units this late in the generation would be the ones to purchase a system less than a year after launch.
Those people wait until late in the generation to take advantage of the lower price and larger library. The 3DS is the same price as the DSi and has access to pretty much every DSi game. If they aren't buying 3DS, the main cause is..... Oh wow. The cause is the battery life!

It's more complicated than that. Retailers, Capcom and Sony are involved.
How does it work? I always thought that it was stores that showed interest and then the publisher prints aproximately close to that demand.

It's a negotiation between all parties.

Stumpokapow had written a detailed analysis analysis some years ago but we couldn't find it then and we won't find it now that search is gone.

The process of a shipment is very complicated. You must count the size of the publisher, the size of the retailer, the game, the period it comes out, the system it comes out.

To give you an example of unpredictable conditions Nintendo stopped giving additional shipments of Mario Galaxy to retailers that lowered its price early trying to sell the initial stock.

Wasn't FF4 also the best selling game in the entire series in Japan?
Yes. The team confirmed that it was coming to Europe, then magazine adverts were spotted, and sadly just before release it was yanked. The dev team then told me it was already working on the next FF and that no Third Party publishers were allowed to touch FF4 at Nintendo's orders. The 'next' FF was of course thought to be FF5...but interestingly enough turned out to be FF2.

Has FF2 been reconfirmed for Wii? I thought it might make a good Wii U launch window release.

Bored off my ass looking at some columns about the 3DS and some future releases. While NA region seems to at least be getting a nice smattering of mostly port/shovelware type stuff, like the DS, at least it's games.

Japan though, the release list according to GameFAQs is pretty damn N64-esque up until November:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/3ds/releases/region-2

I'm surprised no one has tried any quick and dirty PSP to 3DS ports to make some cash.

I would really like having direct reports from Japan about 3DS this week.
At least, knowing if people is still interested in the platform in a good way...
Cvx,RatRat,FFDog,BKK,any other...enlighten us! XD

204,000 new DS family consoles sold
233,000 DS family games sold

I'd imagine that existing DS owners largely purchased Kirby Mass Attack and existing 3DS owners Pokemon, so if you take off a good 30,000 from that number, you're left with a roughly 1:1 attach rate.

So Japanese 3DS buyers presumably (or at least, by average) bought one extra game that appealed to them most and otherwise relied on the in-built apps and eShop.

about the Fatal Frame 2 Wii remake, a little bird told me that it's not coming out for the Wii anymore (moved to the Wii U), not the best source in the world but he might me right

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

It was still scheduled for Wii according to Nintendo's last quarter earnings supplementary information PDF. If it is moved to the Wii U, then it must be quite recent.

well, Monado was listed for US for a long time as well, well into this year I believe;
but making a fatal frame for Wii U makes a lot of sense anyway

3DS games exist outside of the top 20.

Good to see Starfox get a boost, maybe it can hit 100K after all?

Zelda and Nintendogs getting a significant boost comes as no surprise. Hopefully that'll translate to strong legs.

Speaking of which, the real success story here so far is Rhythm Heaven Wii; very nice legs. Not bad for a "dead" console!

Was expecting a fair bit more for Pokemon tbh.

It's a spinoff on a system with a small userbase. It's about right (From doing a bit of digging, it seems that Pokemon Dash did about 70k in its first week - went on to do about 350K-400K LTD), so Super Pokemon Rumble is actually tracking ahead of Ambrella's last portable Pokemon game!

Well I doubt those sorts of numbers would really affect the reality, but of course if 10-20 other 3DS titles were all around the 10K mark then it'd be a different story.

Speaking of which, anyone have a full list of all unique 3DS games released so far (some of them being Japanese exclusive of course)?

PSP getting a pretty good group of game releases next week. Is Black Rock Shooter the biggest name on that list in terms of sales potential? I'm familiar with the name but don't really know much about the franchise.

So what's our prediction on Monster Hunter HD for the PS3? It seems like that game has already sold so many copies in PSP form that there wouldn't be a huge market for the home console version in Japan. Isn't the whole point of MonHun to be sitting next to your buddies and communicating verbally?

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Capcom is making the game and I hope it comes out in the US because I would play it. I just have some doubts about it's sales potential. Of course I could be completely off base and the power of Monster Hunter will propel the HD version into the heavens.

Sort of. It's the one I have the highest end number for (red line below), but considering in earlier years we didn't get things like Top 500s or 1000s, it's quite possible the second PS2 game (green line below) stayed ahead out of view.

It is strange to see that every retailer said that Zelda,Layton,OP and SF were the games with the most important increment...and, in the end, after Zelda, we see in chart

12./00. [3DS] Nintendogs + Cats: French Bulldog / Shiba / Toy Poodle & New Friends | ETC | (Nintendo) {2011.02.26} | ¥4.800 | - 15.221 / 271.872

So,... how?
Maybe, it is due to an audience that buy games constantly and everywhere... that audience 3DS seemed to lack?
Moreover, at least according to Sinobi, 3DS' sales has surpassed its expectations (and Sinobi is very precise and a good representation of the situation)...
If this is true, next week we could see even a slighly fewer drop than PS3 Slim's one... because families are starting to come, maybe.

Pretty simple: the retailer blogs are almost all game specialty shops. Nintendo(especially the more casual games) have a tendency to have sales more focused around big electronic stores/ toys-r-us etc... thus the retailer blogs are less accurate for over-all estimates

Other things of note:

Family Fishing was extremely supply-limited, next shipment isn't till middle of September.

Used Games:

Basically almost all of the early 3ds(that had a decent shipment) soft can be brought used at huge differences compared to the new version. I assume this didn't help Layton. Star Fox, Zelda, One piece used prices are all still relativity high, Nintendogs isn't as bad as the rest of the early bunch.

I also think that Layton is just a series in decline. It was successfully milked for a while, but returns have diminished. The unique add-ons in the later games are nice (London Life for Layton 4, fresh coat of 3D paint for Layton 5, Phoenix Wright for Layton vs. Phoenix) but ultimately the traditional Layton game is a dead end for Level 5 at this point. I guess they'll keep making them for movie and merchandising purposes though. I'm just curious what they'll try to do for Layton 6.

Layton is surely on decline, but I do think the sixth one will end up to sell more than Mask of Miracles, which is on the way to 350k copies. And I also think that the crossover with Phoenix Wright will sell tons of units, since Phoenix is still loved and the game appears to be a huge effort for both Level 5 and Capcom.

The Top 50 for this week is out.

Other 3DS titles in the Top 50:

26. Layton
29. Biohazard Mercs 3D
31. Tales of the Abyss
40. Nazo Waku Yakata
43. Pilotwings

Overall, a nice spread, and this doesn't include original DS games.
