Media Create Sales: Week 4, 2017 (Jan 23 - Jan 29)

Don't worry. MH5 PS4 will sell more than all the 3DS entries because the west actually really loves MH and just doesnt know it yet.
Well that's a relief! But in all seriousness seeing that Capcom is fine losing a good chunk of their audience with key IPs they could really be boneheaded enough to make MH home console exclusive. Now porting the Switch version to PS4 would be a good move imo if it can be done on the cheap.

Who knows what Capcom is gonna do. I thought having a XX port ready for the Switch launch period was a no brainer. But who knows now considering their silence The franchise is going to have some relevant major implementation on PS4 eventually. What or when it is I have no idea though.

I actually believe Capcom is going to let Sony fund a PS4 only MH. Consequently I also believe the franchise is going to decline a lot in the transition period regardless.

Tbh they would be fine just making another 3DS game with HD ports for Switch and PS4.

Gives them the best of all worlds (old user base, new user bases, low costs).

24./00. [PSV] Shinsei Batteki Drive Girls <ACT> (Bergsala-Lightweight) {2017.01.26} (¥6.800) - 3.787 / NEW <40-60%>

Ho ho ho. Nice try, publisher who is about 5 years too late to this party.

23./00. [PS4] New Game! The Challenge Stage! # <ADV> (5pb.) {2017.01.26} (¥7.300) - 3.828 / NEW <60-80%>

Oh right, I didn't realise this was also on PS4.

21./00. [PS4] Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm: HD Edition # <ADV> (Sprite) {2017.01.26} (¥7.800) - 3.895 / NEW <60-80%>

COMG seriously over-estimated this one.

Resident Evil 5 and 6 both did about 6 million shipped according to capcom. There is pretty much no reason why RE had to decline and change direction as a series besides Capcom being incompetemt as fuck.

I know Gaf (enthusiasts as a whole) dislike 5 but the game is actually very well liked among the general audience. What they did with 6 was I dont even know but the coop action direction was not hurtimg the framchise honestly.

If they cant sell through that shipment then they may as well change series direction again and give me more Resident Evil Brosplosion cause that shit is actually a proven seller.

RE 5/6 had shit critical reception. They nearly ruined the cast as well. Capcom changing direction and actually producing a good horror game is the real gift. The sales will be the cherry on the cake.

RE7 will be lucky to get half of that

But has at least garnered respect for the series which is more important in terms of long term prospects. RE6 failed to do that.

Its already shipped 2.5 million so no.

How is this number for Twitch popularity? Completely ignorant whether that's a lot or not.

Massive for a game with no online. Its also massive on Lets play videos. The good word of mouth should also help.

Resident evil 5 had shit critical reception? Are you inventing things to fit your argument again? Please...

Anyway, bad RE7 numbers but if WoM is good I hope it has better legs than other RE titles and reaches 400.000 LTD

Whatever world you are living in where RE5 didnt continue selling and selling quarter after quarter after its release is not earth. And the sales of the current gen rerelease were also good. The game is well liked. I'm tired of this revisionist history. If a game sells 7.1 million copies, reviewed extremely well and the re-release does well how are you still gonna sit here and pedal this bullshit? What reception are you talking about for 5? Gaf? Old Resident evil fanboys? Please do tell.

Its already shipped 2.5 million so no.

It has to actually sell through that shipment.

Interesting. The youtube and streaming community looked like it was their biggest bet since the reveal. I'm really curious to see how the game does WW in the long run.

The main downside I see for them is that it's not a multiplayer game or something like a randomly generated roguelike, so if you just watch the game, you don't have nearly as much incentive to jump in afterwards and play yourself.

Well that would be a huge decline, like seriously huge. Only seeing Capcom I wouldn't rule it out of course.

Their DLC plans seem to have that covered with special survival modes like Ethan Must Die and randomly generated stuff in other modes.

I feel putting things like that in DLC though isn't helpful, since it requires people to get all the way over to "I want to buy this game and its season pass" instead of just "I want to buy this game".

Too true.

DLC a week after release is dumb and reeks of holding content back from the main game.

They are going to have to re evaluate how they handle the series going forward. This new game one year later with new content model is going to burn out eventually imo. They need to be very careful about systems as well.

I dont think they can release another 3DS game. 6 games on the same system is a lot to ask from a fanbase.

All links are on the first page. Why is so difficult to find?
I never knew that was the case (not a frequent Media Create browser), so I was using the site search and just searching thread titles. It looks like the years were added to the titles in May 2009, hence why March threads weren't showing with a search of "Media Create 2009". Regardless, my estimate of 3 million wasn't far off!

Thanks for the heads up, Duckroll.

It's going to do big business in NA. Similar to what happened with FFXV. Japan just doesn't carry these big scale AAA games anymore, the West does.

What are you expecting the NPD debut to look like relative to RE5/RE6?

This is the UK thus far:

Code:
[Week 18, 1998] RESIDENT EVIL 2 (VIRGIN) - 59,000 / NEW
[Week 44, 2005] PS2 RESIDENT EVIL 4 (CAPCOM) - 24,000 / NEW
[Week 11, 2009] RESIDENT EVIL 5 (CAPCOM) - 173,000 / NEW
[Week 12, 2012] RESIDENT EVIL: OPERATION RACCOON CITY (CAPCOM) - 30,000 / NEW
[Week 40, 2012] RESIDENT EVIL 6 (CAPCOM) ~ 130,000 / NEW

The Resident Evil 6 number is just an approximation, it can be off by 10,000 - 15,000 units.
So about 85,000 units for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

What are you expecting the NPD debut to look like relative to RE5/RE6?

Significantly down, but solid debut / strong legs.

We already know from the UK the drop from RE6 to RE7 isn't anywhere near as large in the West as what we are seeing with Japan. I also expect the US market to be proportionally stronger to RE7 than the UK was.

Keep in mind those UK numbers include no digital (which likely takes the game to about 100k, only 30k down from 6)

NPD will have digital included

While I expect it to be able to move at least 4 million over time, my main hesitation is that I'm expecting a lot of this to be at a discount price.

Like Resident Evil 5 had an absolutely insane debut in the US, and Resident Evil 6 was still notably strong (though vastly down).

RE5: 1,523,000
RE6: 806,000

Worth noting though, as I said UK is probably only down 30k in comparison to 6. It's not down by much, and depending on legs it's possible it actually outsells 6 in the UK.

Amazon was briefly sold out of RE7 and there were reports of GameStops selling out as well.

I fully expect above 600k for RE7 in NPD. And I actually forgot how low RE6 was in NA. I think RE7 may actually hit that or come close.

Obviously won't be near as large as 5s opening

Maybe Capcom can move the G-rank content into a DLC season pass deal, and shift MH into a game-as-a-service platform.

Better than I expected for RE. With 1st person and the new art direction they obviously abandoned the Japanese market for the greater good. I.e. global appeal and the return of goodwill for the series, which was lost with that animu-tiered dumpster fire RE6.

not to forget, capcom also has 2 million sales with the rereleases of 4,5 and 6 which should also be a bonus.

I find that pretty crazy they sold another 2M with just porting them to PS4 & XB1. In Japan those sold like 50-75K so far lol?

If Media Create gives first week sell-through you'll get a first idea of what it sold after first day and the legs it will have.

FFXV screamed bomb already from first day -> first week.

If they reach their goal of 4 million units until the end of march, they will most likely make more money off 7 than 6, since the former was way easier to make with their new scanning technique. It will also repair the series reputation for the future. If 7 was like 5 and 6 again, the sales wouldn't have reached 6 either. However, it would have been more costly and further tarnish the series going forward.

Where does this notion that RE7 was somehow "a lot" cheaper than RE5 and/or 6 to make? I keep seeing this "its cheap" notion but I am not seeing it in a truly substantial form aside from the thought that: "Well this project probably wasn't a mismanaged mess of ideas and confusion like RE6."

A project on a shoestring budget (ie. much cheaper than its predecessor) is a Bravely Default -> Bravely Second transition. This project, while not an unwieldy octopus like RE6, was still from what I can tell from my play time pretty much crafted entirely from scratch (and rather well, uncanny "humans" aside) with very highly detailed HD-era work on textures, environments, interactivity, and models. I am not really getting any sense of this project somehow being "cheap" in any capacity. So these sales drops just don't seem to me like "oh they'll make money and be happy with it" from a marque-AAA IP.

Is Capcom now a low/mid-tier company that is happy with "oh we broke even"/"oh we made a little money"? (I mean... well, ya, maybe they are already there.)

Hmm. The production values surely seem much lower. Resident evil 7 almost has no music, cutscenes, set pieces and has only a few enemy types and plays out in a relativey small area. Its also a very short game. Its still a big budget game, for sure, but the production values just seem way lower.

Just doing something as simple as heavily reducing the size of an environment can save you a ton of development time and cash. Easier workflow, fewer employees required.

Way fewer characters, way fewer monsters, fewer overall animations both rendered and recorded, first person perspective, smaller environments, reduced effects, fewer movie-style (highly expensive) cutscenes, lower weapon count, no music that I remember if there is any outside of just a few small audio effects...

I mean, all you have to do is watch maybe just 30 minutes of the RE6 campaign to release the budget difference is pretty big.

Allright, we all know US > World

You can't do 30-60% of RE6's launch in every territory and magically equal the just under 4.5 million that game shipped in the launch window. That game also sold just over 1.8 million total outside of the launch window (without the rerelease) over the next 3 years, yet somehow RE7 will add that amount by March?

Unless RE does 2 million in the US alone that 4 million is a pipe dream.

Hint: it's a pipe dream.

Isn't it very obvious just watching 5 minutes of the game?

You say "good", I say "irresponsible". As a corporate entity existing only to produce entertainment products for the mass market, Capcom has a duty to their fans and their shareholders. They must make what people want, not what no one asked for. I'm glad this tanked in the land of the rising sun.
