Lackluster performance and big decline by God Eater Resurrection compared to an enhanced rerelease namely GodEater2RB. Even the marketing push with the anime doesn´t seem to have helped a lot.

PS4 hold is amazing and it's only going to get better when next year hit. PS4 will end this year with Gravity Daze, Dengeki Bunko, and a new Jojo game. However they will begin next year with Darius Burst, Odin Sphere Leifdrasir, Ryu ga Gotoku: Kiwami and Dragon Quest Builders. Absolutely insane.

I understand Halo selling poorly by virtue of it being on Xbox One in Japan. But that doesn't explain why it sold a third less than Titanfall a year later? Where did those buyers go?

Glad to see PS4 holding above 20k. Will be nice to see it hit 1 million YTD soon.

Also, damn God Eater does so well for Namco.

All right Mafia Creators, I'm going to pull the parts of Nintendo's Q&A - in regards to mobile that is - that I feel are most relevant.

Normally I'd respond item by item, but to avoid setting the tone of the discussion, I'll let at least a few people weigh in first before responding myself.

I've broken up the quotes into short segments since I think I'll probably be replying to them that way later.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/151029qa/index.html

For the smart device applications that we will be releasing after Miitomo, we are considering monetization methods optimal for each application, including charging a fixed amount at point of purchase.
Regarding the alliance with DeNA, things are running smoothly as initially announced. Nintendo has been developing the applications and DeNA will take care of data analysis, etc. The alliance is moving forward with each company contributing in their areas of expertise.
Other than this first application called Miitomo, we are planning other applications that will work with Nintendo’s dedicated video game systems.
For our applications that will be enjoyed only on smart devices, we are creating ideas so that even those smart device users who do not usually play with applications can enjoy them.
While it is important for us to earn profits from our smart device business alone, our primary objective is to encourage smart device users to be interested in and to play with our dedicated video game systems, and we are focused on this goal.
On the other hand, revenue is gained at different times on free-to-start applications and the ones we will ask consumers to pay a certain amount of money for when they download them, and we are planning to apply different revenue systems for each of the approximately five titles that we are aiming to release by the end of March 2017.
While we have not changed our policy of wanting to grow our smart device business into one of the pillars for revenue, the dedicated video game system business remains to be the core of Nintendo’s business, and we do not expect our smart device business to immediately constitute half of our revenue.
I believe Nintendo has shown results with its core dedicated game business by flexibly deciding how to allocate its limited human and other resources, but we are also always challenging ourselves with projects that have the potential to become the next big thing. And now, we see that our smart device business has the potential to become this next big thing.
Upon releasing an application, we believe it is necessary to communicate about the application at least about two months before its release in one way or another.
As for the impact on our financial performance for the fiscal year ending March 2016, as we previously confirmed when the initial forecast was released (in May this year), we were not expecting a large impact if the application were to be released in December, since it is a free-to-start type application. Therefore, we expect the impact to be minimal due to rescheduling the release timing of our first application to March 2016.
For example, this is one of the objectives of deploying our IP on smart devices but it includes our attempt to increase the awareness of Nintendo by delivering our messages to people whom we have not been able to communicate with when deploying our IP on dedicated game systems.
Other than creating new IP, we believe that one of the challenges of developing and expanding character IP is how we can popularize existing IP such as Mario and Link even more among young consumers. Thus, as Mr. Miyamoto mentioned previously, we would like to actively consider measures such as using smart devices and utilizing Nintendo 3DS even more.

I realize that's a lot, but I still cut out like 2/3rds or 3/4ths of their statements to try and reduce to statements that contain any form of meaning.

I'm happy that PS4 has at least somewhat decent releases for Japan in the next few months that should keep it from garbage numbers so the pricecut doesn't go to waste. CoD->BF->Holidays->DQB. Who knows after that doe.

the new baseline for PS4 seems decent. It was around 15k before the price cut, so they gained market share/rough sales.
3DS on the other hand is really suffering being "so old" and populated mostly by "sequels" or "spinoffs" or already released IP.
SMM vs Splatoon still fire up the charts!!! :p
Good for GE on Vita, flop on PS4. the re-transition of IPs from (sony) handheld to (sony) home consoles that seems to be planned by many software houses could be harder than expected.

GE:R is basically god eater burst ultra or whatever. I think it did pretty well for an updated port of an updated game.

I have to admit that PS4 is slowing down not as fast as I thought. It's not that dissimilar to the pace before the cut was announced, but I thought it would've been worse (no changes at all).

God Eater PS4 still did badly compared to GE Vita, though. Hunting games really need portable systems to sell.

Toukiden 2 will be probably the real test that shows if there is any chance to move hunting games to home consoles. It seems to be developed more in home console crowd in mind (open world for once). Hopefully PS4 is also lead platform for development so it would look like proper PS4 game and not upscaled Vita game like hunting game ports so far.

I just don't know who's going to really go out of their way and buy a PS4 for the genre. There seem to be about 50-100k of this genre fans on the system. If anything, by turning it open world. they're going to try and attract the crowd picking up Witcher 3 (and other western attractions) and depending on how far they push, I'd wonder if you can really even call it a hunting game.

With God Eater Burst PSP The Best, GER would technically be a re-re-re-release.

I guess. That said, though, the anime promotion definitely cost a pretty penny (even if its in development hell) so I'd have wonder what the expectations were for the title.

More than double compared to last year, So yeah

The PS4 had a solid year of constant releases, a price cut, and a strong marketing push. You'd expect the number to be higher, a lot higher than it was last year, but this is still not a good number. (And software remain pathetic.)

Its "good sales" are on the same level as a market saturated 3DS which hasn't seen a big release in quite some time. Its now performing in the ball park of the PS3 (still expensive in its lifetime). That should give you an overall estimate of where we're going to end up and, as we've seen, price-cuts just aren't that capable in this scenario as it bumped us all of ~4k on a weekly basis. The PS4 is also not going to be on the market for near a decade. (So really nothing much has changed since the BB soft price drop for general estimates.)

htoL#NiQ sold 10k so definitely good.

Wasn't the game in retail format only through a limited edition?

Yes, quite surprising given the competition the game / genre has nowadays, and the fact that there are 6 Picross games on eShop at 5 euro each (of course, 2D Picross, but still).

Actually, looking back at the weekly numbers, the PS4's basically absorbed around 4-5k of sales from the PS3 since the price cut. And, back when BB soft drop started, it had taken up another 5-10k of the PS3.

So we've seen a consumer transition but the overall PS numbers remain flat for consoles.

Kinda neat.

Yeah, it was. I believe they only printed like 10k copies. I guess there was more demand for this kind of lower-tier NIS stuff than they realised for both this game & Yomawari, judging by sellthrough.

We use the thread more as a "Japanese sales thread" which is why you'll see financial reports, mobile strategies, corporate data, and Famitsu data referenced here.

Ah okay, just seemed a little out of nowhere among the Bond jokes and Halo comparisons :D

Well yeah. I don't know if it even works but there seems to be more effort put to the title with Toukiden 2. Like you also said we need to see some gameplay to determine if it even is traditional hunting game

Eh. While there has been decent amount of releases this year most of them have been really small and it's not like PS4 didn't have its dry periods during the summer. Witcher 3 being one of the best selling games for PS4 this year should tell you how ''strong'' lineup it has had. PS4 is selling in line what home consoles have generally sold during normal weeks since 2009. I don't know if you could expect that much more from it.

this seems to be a weekly thing with you where you downplay the price cut effect. i'm still unsure as to why you keep saying PS4's baseline was 18k before the price cut, because it wasn't. it was 14-15k with it now being over 20k with no games releasing currently.

I think the pre-pricecut baseline was less than 18K. It was more like 15K.

It was 15-18k, bouncing up and down with minor release... like, for example, GE:R that just released.

Only time will tell indeed. I suspect it may ultimately end up like a less story-heavy Witcher 3 type of game with more emphasis on the big kills.

It had dry periods, sure, (which seems kind of moot, all consoles experience dry periods) but its still been seeing good and steady releases aligned more with Japan (big and small). And, I'm pretty sure in my post that I said it was selling around PS3 levels, so I don't know why you think I am expecting more from it. The only thing I think is a weak showing is the overall affect of the price cut.

Unless you want to tell me that BB, MGSV, DQH, and the various other titles I'm on the spot forgetting are somehow not big releases + all the usual annual staples. Witcher 3 was a surprise hit, doesn't take away from everything else that hit this year, though.

??? No. Week in and week out I've given my predictions the week prior, and haven't been wrong. This week was actually the first week that my estimates were overshot. I had my expectations of it slipping closer to the 20k than it ultimately did but that is a difference of about a thousand sales.

The baseline was 15-18k depending on what came out or not on the week. Like, you know, the title that released this week.

Could be worse, like the DS to 3DS drop. Heck at this rate Nintendo will be out of business.

X1 down on Halo week. Guys, I think it may be in trouble.

I realize that's a lot, but I still cut out like 2/3rds or 3/4ths of their statements to try and reduce to statements that contain any form of meaning.

For our applications that will be enjoyed only on smart devices, we are creating ideas so that even those smart device users who do not usually play with applications can enjoy them.

It seems like Nintendo is trying to make mobile games that can't really be done on a 3DS or other dedicated handhelds. Hard to say if Miitomo falls into this category, but Pokemon Go is definitely something only smartphones can do.

For the smart device applications that we will be releasing after Miitomo, we are considering monetization methods optimal for each application, including charging a fixed amount at point of purchase.

While it is important for us to earn profits from our smart device business alone, our primary objective is to encourage smart device users to be interested in and to play with our dedicated video game systems, and we are focused on this goal.

I think they're still unsure if they're really comfortable with FSP/F2S. Steel Diver and Rusty were both F2S experiments, but obviously I have no idea if they saw those as successes. I imagine Pokemon Shuffle and Rumble World were also part of their experimentation. Rumble World at least seems to have worked out pretty well for them despite the payment cap. They know that F2P with microtransactions is how you get big money on mobile, but I wonder if they're trying to change that so that other monetization schemes are just as viable. We'll need to see more mobile games from them to get a sense of what their strategy really is.
