Media Create Sales: Week 51, 2016 (Dec 19 - Dec 25)

It could be not Famitsu but your number is way outdated too.

GT6 received the Gold Prize in Japan for reached 500k in Dec 2014.... after that the sales were updated once:

Sep 15 2015: 590k

Are you saying they overshipped 90k more units without sell the 500k shipment???

Famitsu 376,432 is dated to Dec 2014... if you add digital you could have something over 400k for the 500k shipment... after that PD shipped (or sold digitally) more 90k. Famitsu lower seller in 2015 was 64.848... GT6 could be sold up to 60k in 2015.

I claim that massive over ship bullshit right here.

from Media Create 2015 top 1000:

348./112. [PS3] Gran Turismo 6 # <RCE> (Sony Computer Entertainment) {2013.12.05} (¥6.648) - 14.296 / 363.471 (-81%) (204.784 <55,92%>)

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I'll quote you alright. First off, when was the last time a Nintendo console was fierce competition for Sony? Nintendo is not interested in competing with MS or Sony.
You really think Switch wont be competition for PS4 ? Nintendo is about to change how people interact with their homeconsole games with Switch - if Switch takes off it will likely have a negative effect on a "traditional" consoles like PS4.

Also more current gen games like DQXI will be on both systems - this wasnt the case on Wii/PS3 and PS4/WiiU for most of the time.

I think that depends on the reason why people buying PS4 in the first place .
Is it the more hardcore gamer that care about certain things like the west .
I think we know at this point that traditional consoles in Japan will never get the casual gamer back .

Whoever manages the PSN must be on holiday break or something as last week rankings haven't been updated yet.

Famitsu retail+digital some updates.

Pokémon Sun / Moon now the 4th best selling game on 3DS.

01. Animal Crossing: New Leaf [All Versions]: 4.728.174
02. Pokémon X / Y: 4.557.957
03. Monster Hunter 4: 3.862.41
04. Pokémon Sun / Moon: 3.305.096
05. Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits / Fleshy Souls: 3.257.917
06. Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire: 3.190.441
07. Monster Hunter Generations: 3.091.363
08. Yo-kai Watch 2: Shin Uchi: 2.699.208
09. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate [All Versions]: 2.693.561
10. Mario Kart 7: 2.633.389

Shipment data looks something like this, all these numbers are old.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf: 5.15m
Pokémon X / Y: Around 4.57m
Monster Hunter 4: 4.1m
Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire: 3.34m
Monster Hunter Generations: 3.3m
Bony Spirits / Fleshy Souls should be floating between 3.3m and 3.4m Level 5 gave an update a few months ago but didn't include digital for whatever reason.

Sun / Moon shipments should be above 3.4m so 4th best selling 3DS game either way.

Back to Animal Crossing, between rereleases the game has sold more than 200k this fiscal year, should have no trouble selling more than a million worldwide for the whole year so we should be getting a new updated from Nintendo on April/May, either way New Leaf should outsell Wild World and become the best selling game in the series.

LTD for some other 3DS games.

Kirby: Planet Robobot: 500.156
Monster Hunter Stories: 300.606
Dragon Ball: Fusions: 202.488

Wii U games, Minecraft sells more than 400k, Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 surpass 1.6m and 1.3m respectively.

01. Splatoon: 1.606.372
02. Mario Kart 8: 1.319.051
03. New Super Mario Bros. U: 1.260.178
04. Super Mario Maker: 1.047.189
05. Wii Party U: 831.292
06. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U: 789.947
07. Super Mario 3D World: 613.693
08. Minecraft: Wii U Edition: 416.543
09. Nintendo Land: 400.704
10. Pikmin 3: 232.313

Last shipment data for Splatoon had it at 1.55m, 1.3m for Mario Kart 8, we should be getting an update for both come April/May.

Minecraft on Vita sells more than 1.2 million.

Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition: 1.226.065

The fact that most PS ecosystem games sell more on Vita might indicate that Switch could have an advantage in appealing to the average Japanese gamer.

Edit: Though that mostly matters if they share software.

Maybe they work at 4Gamer? :3

Seriously, thanks for the data. Pretty good news for Animal Crossing: New Leaf. I believe it's the only multi-million selling franchises that didn't go down this gen (and was big during the previous one). All the others are down (Mario Kart, NSMB, etc.).

What are you talking about, everything about NPD hardware patterns shows this gen is frontloaded versus last gen. Vita and Wii U both died much earlier, 3DS tracked far behind DS despite holding on yet, PS4+XBO are still resting on their record breaking launches to remain ahead aligned versus 360+PS3 and while it's early we presently aren't seeing any indication VR/Pro/remodels are going to manage the mid-cycle reinvigoration we saw with Kinect/remodels last gen. Even with their insane launches we might see PS4+One fall behind 360+PS3 ltd aligned next year.

We're looking at a generation that's likely going back to 5-6 years I suspect. Last gen was an anomaly.

Well I guess you could say that as a whole this gen has been frontloaded. It's mostly because of Nintendo though (and handheld market collapsing generally). The judgement is still out for PS4 and Xbox One. Also bolded is not happening. PS4 is so ridiculously ahead of PS3 (15.7 million vs 9.75 million) and X360 sold around the same in 2009 as in 2008 so if Xbox One doesn't crater it will not fall that much behind X360 yet (currently Xbone leads 14.3 million vs 12.41 million). Gap between HD gens could actually still grow if better holiday lineup next year leads to better or at least flat holiday sales.

The big storyline of 2016 is that the 3DS, the console that the majority keeps declaring to be dead this year, ends up being the best selling hardware of 2016. Next year may not fare well for the old dog, especially if the Switch ends up being a tough competitor, but with MHXX and DQXI still up for next year, I'm still not counting out the 3DS.

It'll sell more than 1 million for sure. And damn, didn't know all the yokai 2 versions sold 7 million... my god!

Damn I severely underestimated Mario Maker and to a lesser extent underestimated most of the list. At least I was closest with 2 of them... I went from winning a section last month to coming last in a section this month :/

I guess the real bullshit is the idea that GT6 sold 60k outside the charts. Or that any tracker claimed 500k sold ever.

Pokemon well on its way to 4 million and Final Fantasy XV is having a surprising hold, it'll probably make it to 1 million, that's cool.

Is anyone keeping a comparison for the week to week sales for Pokemon games?

Looks like this Sumikko Gurashi title is going to outsell the previous titles given that we haven't even counted week 52 & week 1 of the next year :).

-----------------------------------------------------------------

How much do people think Yokai Watch 3: Sukiyaki could have sold this week without stock issues?

---------------------------------------------------------
Also P&D X is having much better legs than P&D Mario Edition... it looks like it'll eventually sell pretty close to it.... maybe it'll barely outsell it?

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition 177.963 / 333.642
didn't even chart last holidays
vs.
Puzzle & Dragons X: God Chapter / Dragon Chapter - 100.943 / 278.626
Sold 13.822 this week.

Also Mario Maker sales are insane and Pokemon sales are great :).

Yeap... and Sony shipped more 90k units to Japan just to overship lol

I mean how retail can accept more 90k units if they already have dozen of copies on shelves... makes all sense.

I do think it could have at least a -5%, most probably could have a better second week than first. They mismanaged the game allowing the stock issue.

Is the Vita a Minecraft console or why is no game getting a bump on it?

Christmas sales = kids, basically.
Minecraft is the only vita game successful among kids and younger/casual audience.
Amazing performance, it's rare for a sony console to have titles with such long legs.

What pattern? Obviously, PS4/XB1 will have much shorter lifecycles than PS360 but the notion that this gen is frontloaded is some hilarious notion that has been going on for years, starting with the typical doomsayers at their launch.

PS360vsPS4XB1_201611.png
To see if something is frontloaded compared to last generation, you would want to split that table out by year and see if the positive change in annual totals is higher or lower than last generation.

Frontloaded doesn't mean "collapsing," it just means it sold more if its expected lifetime total up front.

Media Create favorite developer is apparently releasing games for home console next year: http://gematsu.com/2016/12/atlus-koei-tecmo-compile-heart-tease-unannounced-titles-2017

Yeah. I asked Sal about that:

In these articles does "home console" mean home console in the western sense (stationary system hooked up to TV), or does it mean "not mobile" game?

Home console can be either stationary or handheld. I'll add note of that.

So y'know, don't get your hopes up, it'll be low budget handheld stuff for as long as they can milk it :p

I assumed that was true of listings of "console," but apparently we're now doing that for "home console" as well.

I still maintain that makes more sense to translate as "dedicated device."

Love the talk of how Switch is going to be a 'good' portable hardware. For all we know, Nintendo is actually marketing it as a proper home console.

I do think they might release a full-on portable mode for it later down the line, depending on its success. But honestly the idea that people in Japan will embrace the Switch as a portable is far fetched for now.

Still there are a whole bunch of other factors involve in there .
Like release date for the system per region and price also play a big part of that .
Is this gen frontloaded or did last gen just take really long to get going compare to normal gens .
One thing for certain is this gen won't last as long as last gen .
Then Pro and Scorpio already change things compare to gens before them .

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Love the talk of how Switch is going to be a 'good' portable hardware. For all we know, Nintendo is actually marketing it as a proper home console.

I do think they might release a full-on portable mode for it later down the line, depending on its success. But honestly the idea that people in Japan will embrace the Switch as a portable is far fetched for now.

It is a portable, thats a fact - no matter how successful it ends up being. New 3DS XL is a beast compared to OG Gameboys or GBA products and people wanna play on bigger and higher quality screens on the Go. New 3DS XL vs. New 3DS proved that as well.

Is that last image all hardware sales from October - December in 2015 vs. 2016? Remarkably close actually.

I do think it could have at least a -5%, most probably could have a better second week than first. They mismanaged the game allowing the stock issue.

Yeh... that'd be a huge miss.... although I assume retailers decide how much to order right? And they didn't want a repeat of YW3's overstocking?

I think people might be over-complicating it, basically:

Can you take it on the bus/train? Yes

Will it have mainline Pokémon? Yes

It's a portable.

EDIT:
If I may be flippant... the Switch has a Pokémon RPG coming to it. It's going to be accepted as a handheld.

Totally beat me to it.

To see if something is frontloaded compared to last generation, you would want to split that table out by year and see if the positive change in annual totals is higher or lower than last generation.

Frontloaded doesn't mean "collapsing," it just means it sold more if its expected lifetime total up front.

But what is up front. We are already nearly past year 3, perhaps a midpoint if 6 year cycles are used. PS4 sales are probably at 55 million shipped, so what you place the LTD at assuming its front loaded because I think 100 million shipped is possible.

Pokemon Stars will be big so will Splatoon, Mario Kart, Smash and Co. if they are smart they will have Monster Hunter XX at launch as well. It really wont matter much what it is as long as it get this type of content.

Not people, just DarkLordMalik....at least for now lol.

I agree that the switch is a handheld, that's indisputable, but nintendo is marketing it as a console.

We havent seen their marketing for the JPN market yet. They unveiled the system a couple of weeks before the 3DS was about to get its biggest games of the year - 3DS is their only money maker so it makes sense that they didnt want to market it as their next handheld while trying to sell 3DS systems this Holiday season.

I think what's more important is what they show. In the unveil video they showed people playing on the go and no one was confused because it was meant to be a home console. It surprisingly seems to be quite easy to understand.

If they want western third party support, they will push the console angle because no one wants to support a handheld in the current gaming market.

Sales-Age Genius
I think you are underestimating software sales for some games... GTS is the first PS4 GT and it will sell more than GT6 did... RE7 I expect to be a massive success in both critic, sales and wom... DQXI will sell gangbusters on PS4 (3DS too)... FFVIIR will sell more than FFXV.

You won't go far with predictions like these.

RE7 is very close, you'll see what it will sell.

By that exact same logic, they'll market it as a handheld for Japan, which is totally possible.

Btw, on a totally separate note, why didn't Dragon Quest Builders pop up on the charts for Vita during the holidays? Has it not received any kind of price cut? I would assume some sort of budget version of the game would sell well to the Minecraft Vita crowd at least...
