"Microsoft has tried the first path and it did not work at all. We believe we have a meaningful subscription service." - Jim Ryan

Sony Interactive Entertainment/PlayStation President & CEO Jim Ryan On Gamepass: "I can say with a very high degree of certainty that Microsoft has tried the first path and it did not work at all. That has driven them to make the large acquisition. I talked to all the publishers, and they unanimously do not like Game Pass because it is value destructive, not only on an individual title-basis, but also or an industry level. The recent number of subscribers that Microsoft announced on January was 25 Million. I am sure everyone has their own views on this, but I personally was expecting a larger number given all the money they have spent. We have close to 50 Million PlayStation Plus subscribers. We believe we have a meaningful subscription service."

More into it

"We will do what we are doing right now, which is to become less reliant on 3rd Party games and 3rd Party royalties, and to make more 1st Party games. If we double our share of 1st Party games, which are more profitable than the 3rd Party royalty stream, it will bring down our reliance on 3rd Party games." "That is the single biggest thing, and one of the main reasons why we are embarking on M&A. I would like to point out that we are also growing our existing studios, increasing capabilities and their ability to output in various areas including live services. I feel like this part deserves a lot more attention than it currently gets. Large M&A gets all the headlines, but there is a lot going on, and growing your studios organically successfully is a smart thing to do."

VERY interesting looking back at what Jim Ryan said almost 6 months ago. I sorta overlooked the second post about him wanting Playstation to focus more on 1st party games going forward, compared to 3rd party games. Plus he seems extremely focused on not losing their identity on SP games.

Plus he's basically predicting MS' future with Xbox on the first Twitter post. Saying that MS' Gamepass idea wasn't a good path and it hadn't grown in years.

People should've paid more attention to what he said.
He may not have been as likeable as others, but the guy did know how to run the business.

Playstation is not going to follow MS.

Ironically I'd have more trust in that being the case if he were staying.

Nobody knows what the next dude will be like yet.
I don't know. If it's some Japanese guy, I think they will be more traditional, like Nintendo.
But I could be wrong, ofcourse. Lol

I wouldn't know who would be a good replacement though.
Can't imagine it being Herman Hulst, although I think he has the same idea as Layden and Ryan.

If its Hulst, playstation is fucked.

With the current economic environment it will require someone who is not a soft touch, that's for sure.

I am even more concerned by keeping the CFO on it too long, but we need someone with guts, decisive, with hope for the future, but also able to avoid spreading panic.

No idea what kind of leadership Hulst offers, but he seems to be in line with the rest of Playstation.

Maybe I'm biased, but the Dutch know how to do business.

No shit. This has been my reason for disliking gamespass, that I’ve expressed multiple times here. It’s the day one stuff. It may seem a great deal for some people right now (personally it’s not so much for me, tho I do subscribe). And whilst it’s value destructive today, for todays players, it’s waaaaay more value destructive 10 years from now, once it’s all a generation of future consumers have ever known, and in a time of costly development, will render everyone from indie to aaa unprofitable and non viable as businesses. It leaves 2 options, be owned by one of the platforms. Or release your game “for free” (well, the peanuts they give you for ‘engagement’) returning waaaay below the dev costs, then recoup those costs via as many nickle and dime strategies as you can squeeze in. But we already have a consumer base becoming increasingly hostile to those means of monetisation. So where does that leave studios? Just seems a portent for an industry collapse (which in fairness we’re kinda seeing already).

You must've missed the 360/ps3 era where literally studios were shutting down left and right. It was only a matter of time before some of the big companies merged. But from a customer standpoint, game pass is a good deal if you like trying new things without breaking the bank.

Otherwise developers need to get with the times and find their niche or they'll soon be owned by another company. Don't blame game pass for what already happened 15 years ago.

And yet Sony raise prices on PSN without much more value and PS games are not even Day 1 on the subscription. Yeah, no. Sorry Jimmy.
That's because they can aka they are successful with their audience. On the other hand Microsoft was giving their first party releases for relative pennies (Day 1 GP) and it still didn't help them grow their market share. Food for thought there.

I don’t care about the business, I’m a customer.
Great for you! A little less great for the future, since GP failure contributes to Microsoft being less of a threat to Sony. Result? PS+ price increases. Reminds me of this:

"First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me."

Ryan was always right in everything he said about the GP, about releasing a low-power console and about Xbox's strategy in general but at that time they made fun of his words, now we see the Xbox brand with a console that is selling less and less , with a stagnant service and having to release its firsts on rival consoles.

Jimbo was hated by a lot of people including PS Players. I guess people didn’t like that he was too direct, he wasn’t likeable but he did the job.

Yoshida and Totoki have stated the core of the business will continue intact, I have faith in both of them. But is yet to be seen who will be the person to replace old Jimbo.

And that's exactly why you don't take Spencer words as gospel, he's a serial liar.
Yep. Phil says a lot of things, and most of them are just plain lies.

Here is another of his statements that turned out to be a lie.

"But I'll also say in the model—I'm just answering directly the question that you had—when I think about where people are going to be playing and the number of devices that we had, and we have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don't have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us." -- Phil Spencer.

Technically, he ain't lying. He just supports more platforms now.

I was, and there was not many from my recollection. I was just about around for the actual games crash in the 80s. Even with consolidation it’s not working out, hence gamespass pretty much being flat growth, microsoft could buy every studio on the planet, but they can’t all be making games because they aren’t generating enough revenue via subs to be releasing them all for £100/yr.

Gamespass is a great deal if:
You have little income
Your a kid

Same with ps+, I have both, I generally already own everything on them, the occasional game shows up that I’m interested in and don’t own. Just enough to warrant the sub. For kids both are phenomenally good deals.

I ran a studio back when apple first launched, and saw the race to the bottom on pricing and we now see the consequences of that. Mobile gaming revenue models have been a blight on the industry and have spread to console games. But they were necessary because the audience was trained to demand everything “for free”. Apple in more recent years have tried to offer something that addresses that with Apple Arcade, premium mobile games without all the ads and microtransactions, but despite its popularity recent reports seem to suggest it is failing, payouts have declined greatly, many games cancelled. Making people expect things that cost a lot to produce, borderline “for free” is just bad business.

A lot of the things we used to expect to be “free” things like news etc, relied on ads to make money. Ad targeting via things like fb etc meant ad revenue was sufficient to support all these free ad supported models. All it took to break that and cause exploding costs for advertisers to acquire customers (advertisers including such as MS, Netflix etc) was a privacy policy change from apple, along with vastly reduced payouts for ad impressions. We’ve since seen a massive rise in subscription models. There’s very few news sites etc that are now free, and once respected news sites reworking more towards clickbait or “first reporting” that breeds wildly inaccurate or misrepresented reporting to drive fear, hate, anger (those drive more clicks). There’s always a quality and societal cost to these things, which we overlook as consumers for short term apparent gains.

I'm interested to see what will happen with that too. Phil said it was their "intent" to release all Xbox games, including CoD, on Game Pass. We'll see what happens when a new CoD title releases. I can definitely see them releasing older titles, though.
I thought "intent" was an interesting choice of word. Not as definitive as "will be". Still think the next one will be at least.

I always read about how Xbox players don't seem to buy games. I wonder if that so true that Microsoft wouldn't lose much from the lost sales on the Xbox side of they did release COD on gamepass day and date.

Not many my ass. But even tho I mostly agree with you on the other stuff, game pass is for adults like me who spend money on games if I'm interested and I have to spread my gaming habits across multiple systems with little time. So game pass helps me in that sense. That Nintendo tax hurts lol.

Gamepass is sooner or later gonna go up in price. It's inevitable, more after the $75 billion+ spent on acquisitions.

Imagine a gradual increase to $20 and then finally to $25/mo for Gamepass Ultimate.

The numbers won't be sustainable at that price of entry (even if PoE is a little lower) for subscription services.

A little off-topic, but why was Bo banned? Was it a perm?

Was always right.
But we always questioned how Microsoft made money if nobody is buying games. I havent bought a XBX game in YEARS. I also cancel and renew GP as i see fit and im sure im not the only one that doesnt need it month to month year round. Especially with minimal exclusives.

Im glad it seems they will keep their primary focus.

Also- COD going GP day one potentially is a horrible idea. Another bad idea from Xbx to simply feed a subscription model and really not see the benefit of sales

More than inevitable, it is obvious. But for all subscriptions services. Not sure for Bo Hazem. I liked him. Probably he said something he should not have said in the Hamas/Israel thread?

If you're too stupid to decode that, perhaps the Internet isn't the place for you.

Phil Spencer: We don't have to ship our games on non-Microsoft platforms to make our business model work.
Reality: Microsoft begins shipping their games on non-Microsoft platforms because their business model isn't working.

…And right after that quote, they shipped HFR, Redfall and Starfield from Zenimax exclusively on Xbox and PC.

Imagine having to explain to a grown ass man the meaning of the word ‘lie’.

Yup. Man said he didn’t have to ship Bethesda games on other platforms to make the economics work and proceeds to prove it by shipping the next 2 AAA games on Xbox exclusively, and by tanking the heat from the FCC on Bethesda exclusivity during extremely critical regulatory scrutiny from Activision. And they’re out here claiming he lied at the time he made the statement.

No. A ‘lie’ in this context means Phil and MS always planned to keep all Bethesda games multiplatform when that statement was made, and knew by 2021 that Redfall would crash and burn and Starfield would underperform.

Why is this so hard for people to understand?

The current reality doesn’t have anything to do with this.

You're way too much in the know to keep pretending Phil Spencer doesn't value PR/Lies over everything. Way too many contradictions to even try to list. This is the earliest Phil Spencer BS I remember and there's been a litany ever since...

In case you haven't noticed, the FGC has collapsed on XB since Phil promised to make amends.

Me: “in this specific example that’s being shared, it doesn’t make sense to claim it’s a lie since they certainly tried to pursue exclusivity and refused to bend even under FTC pressure ”

You: “Why would you pretend Spencer has never lied or misled people before?”

why?

Although it feels unlikely I can't say it is impossible for them to make more money off COD people by releasing day and date. But no serious person was including COD on a list of games that people don't buy on Xbox.
