Microsoft Said It Would Have Kept Sega Games Multiplatform After Proposed Buyout

As part of a strategy document released during the ongoing Federal Trade Commission (FTC) vs Microsoft trial to determine the fate of Xbox’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft outlined its operating plan for Sega, had its plan to buy the company behind Sonic came to be.

The document, reviewed by IGN, reveals Microsoft’s plan for Sega to report into Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty with the following operating principles:

  • We will continue to develop and sell all acquired games and franchises on all relevant platforms (e.g., Android, iOS, PlayStation, Steam, Switch, Windows, Xbox, etc).
  • We will bring previously exclusive to PlayStation and Nintendo titles to Xbox and launch future titles on Xbox in addition to other relevant platforms as rights permit.
  • We will launch all acquired games and franchises with subscription exclusivity into Xbox Game Pass on console, PC, and cloud; future releases will ship into Xbox Game Pass on a day-and date basis.
The important point here is that Microsoft, in November 2020 when this strategy was outlined, did not plan to make Sega games such as Sonic Xbox exclusive. Rather, it planned to continue to make Sega games multiplatform, and bring exclusives to Xbox.

yep Microsoft is always very weasely with their wording, just like Bethesda there’s no doubt in my mind that anything new would have become exclusive if they had somehow bought Sega

of course the same people that defend them here are the same ones that turn around & claim that obviously Microsoft only meant stuff like ESO & Fallout 76 despite having claimed the opposite before the deal closed

there’s a huge spat of intellectual dishonesty going on right now and strange how it’s almost entirely in ‘favor’ of one of the richest corporations in the world? 🤔

If MS acquires Sega then that will be 3 publishers in a row that were acquired but kept games multiplatform. I am starting to think all the talk about buying publishers will mean less options for consumers is no longer true post Zenimax acquisition. The reality is if these publishers get bought out then consumers will have more options:
1) Buy the game like it has always been done traditionally
or
2) Play it on a subscription service

And yeah if Sony does buy Square Enix I think the games will still come to other platforms namely Nintendo Switch.

Not really, there is always the posibility when notch sold minecraft, there was a clause it needed to be ported to all the systems, like fifa need have 1 entry in each console

These are internal documents, not press interviews.

If someone believe Booty's internal emails as their active strategy, you should believe this too.

No evidence of that whatsoever. Much more likely that Microsoft are just true to their word and haven't taken games off platforms. In fact they released Minecraft Dungeons after the deal so that pretty much disproves that theory.

Microsoft is trying to pulling the wool over everyone's eyes that aren't paying attention...they've purposely limited their own console sales this gen to provide more units dedicated to the cloud.

In court they're showing graphs of how much Sony and Nintendo are winning the console wars and they're "losing the console wars" as just a cover up, they actually don't care about losing in console anymore because they're done with that part of their plan...their new plan is full subscription service with an intent to go fully cloud even further into the future.

The acquisitions they're going for now are all for that subscription service and cloud future. Pointing out that Sony is beating them in console sales is just a cover up and a reason to look weak in court
