Heh, good thread :)

I've just been going hard on my CPU trying to see what kind of OC I can take it to, running the benchmark again now at 4.0 and we'll see how much that extra 500mhz of CPU power helps my score :)


Annnnnnd... I actually scored lower than yesterday... plus my cards were up at 910/1410 as well... my Graphics score was higher, but the Physics score was lower... go figure lol.

New score - I decided to OC the GPU as far as it would go before I had to increase the voltage going to it and a less mild CPU overclock.

I'm really happy with how cool everything remained - neither the CPU or GPU got over 55C during the run, so there's a fair bit of headroom left.

Seems far higher than my bench at 950/1350 at 4.6Ghz. Don't think RAM speed has that much of an impact, but maybe I'm wrong here.

New score here as well. I also tried to OC the 570 without changing the voltage and my score went up from 5745 to 6179. (732Mhz-815Mhz) I think that's a far as I'm going to try to go...

Go into Avast > Real Time Shields > Behavior Shield > Expert Settings > Trusted Processes > Then browse to your 3DMark11 folder and add "3DMark11Workload1" to trusted processes.

Install CPU-Z or other apps to make sure your CPU Overclock is actually being applied.

You should also overclock (carefully). I have a very similar setup as you and scoring 7700+ My CPU is at 4.6ghz and GTX580 running at 900/1800/2200 with a vcore of 1.088

you sure it's overclocked? hyperthreading enabled? sure you got memory running in dual channel mode?

download CPU-Z to check some things

your graphics tests look OK

is it possible your just using turbo mode @4.4? My understanding is that turbo only runs one thread Overclocked and rest will run at base speed.so single threaded apps get big boost but multithreaded apps don't react as well

Really?, I've just upgraded to an i5 system so this turbo mode and offset business is all new to me but I didn't think that was the case?

1.138 is the max without bios flashing (and max on air anyway)

lower the memory because it's not a bottleneck probably, maybe that allows a bit more headroom for the core

everything else amounts to better cooling. Either a table fan next to your computer or replacing the thermal paste/cooling of the card and other warranty voiding activities you'll probably not like ;)

880 on a normal 580 with max vCore on air isn't great but nothing out of the ordinary :) most cards going over 900 are Lightnings / Matrixes and what not with more cooling and more voltage capabilities

Heres part i was thinking about..
When running a single threaded application, the Core i7-2600K will power gate three of its four cores and turbo the fourth core as high as 3.8GHz. Even with two cores active, the 32nm chip can run them both up to 3.7GHz. The only thing keeping us from 4GHz is a lack of competition to be honest. Relying on single-click motherboard auto-overclocking alone, the 2600K is easily at 4.4GHz. For those of you who want more, 4.6-4.8GHz is within reason. All on air, without any exotic cooling

Oh dear, you are right about the memory. I have had two sticks of 4gb Gskill ripjaws in slots 3 & 4 , not dual channel. Problem is my CPU cooler (Akasa Venom) is blocking slots 1 & 2 :(

had a hunch lol ... but ouch, that seriously kills performance

best is to place the fan on the other side (still keep it blowing towards the back ofcourse), will increasing your temperature somewhat (~5ish Celcius?) but it's worth the performance increase.

Alternatively you might try to place it on the other side and turn both the back case fan and cpu fan around so the back fan works as an intake fan for the CPU fan. You would need some good fans in the top to not disturb airflow too much though.

or try to remove the heatspreaders from the ram (voids warranty)

Your not going to fry your chip, it will just run a little hotter, just run a few bench tests after to see if it's still ok with the new temps, if not nudge the clock down a bit.

I do this for two sticks, and have never had a problem. If your PC has an intake fan blowing air over RAM, you'll be fine. Even without that it shouldn't cause trouble.

Most of those heat spreaders are for show.

From what I've understood heatspreaders on ram are totally superfluous. Could be wrong.

Monitoring cpu-z on my secondary screen while running 3d mark I noticed that my cpu is only stepping up during the physics tests, is that normal?, I finished with P5485 which 3d mark says is lower than average but my physics was fine @ p7928.

yeah graphics parts are only graphically intensive, hardly use any CPU

that's why it's good to look at the separate scores for physics/graphics as well when comparing results

graphical score seems low compared to my 480 (even with the +15mhz for me) ... you might want to try the latest Nvidia beta drivers ;)

The latest drivers have been causing a lot of random crashes which is why I rolled back to 275.33 which fixed a lot of problems. Was waiting on a new driver update from Nvidia before jumping back to 280.

Edit: I hear tell new WHQL drivers are being released tomorrow so I'll jump then.

same here with the WHQL ones but the latest BETAs have been OK

and for benching true stability doesn't matter ;)

Oh in principle I agree, but this was causing crashes not even under load but at idle.

I might give the beta a cheeky go though :lol

are you using the motherboard graphical output or just the 570?

I am using the 570 to power my main screen and I have an old ati card in the second pci-e slot to power two other monitors, I realise that means my 570 runs @ PCI-E 2.0 x16 @ x8 but that shouldn't be limiting my card should it?

I'm temped to take out the old ati card and run it at a full x16.

You need to upgrade to a Intel CPU, heavy favor on bench, which would require new MB and possibly new ram.

x8 / x16 makes only the slightest of differences, so I doubt it's just that

however maybe running multiple monitors (even though they're on another card) might cause some performance loss ... not really certain but I'd try disabling the other monitors or even the Ati card (in device manager) temporarily to see whether it changes anything

I like how you have no less than FOUR different brands of memory sticks in there :)

forget about dedicated physics, unless you are a huuuge Batman fanboy (only upcoming PhysX game I know of). The "physics" in 3dmark reflect your CPU and the combination of your CPU and GPU. (Test 5 is CPU only, Test 6 combined)

you score low because a 3.2GHz Phenom X4 is low these days, AND your DDR2 memory is making it even worse.

I'd just save for a i5 2500K or AMD Bulldozer setup and meanwhile try to overclock the CPU somewhat. It should play all current games without much issues :)
