Phil’s right. That wasn’t the full quote. He went on to say, Xbox’s vision of gaming is different. Xbox wants the whole industry to grow, giving people more options and access to games.

It’s clear Sony just wants people on PlayStation hardware. Although they have been moving games slowly to PC, and not day one.
Wtf you on about.

If he wants the whole industry to grow why make all zenimax games exclusive. If no one switches to xbox for those games hes actually shrunk the industry.

You've also disproven your own statement in the second sentance.

Dont believe his lies as the meme says....

my brain is starting to hurt to think that Phil saying that Sony wants to make Xbox smaller considering that Xbox has around 30 studios compared to 19 Sony has. Xbox used to make 3rd party exclusives back when there was xbox 360 and Sony doing it now so they both do it. If this AB goes through that gives Microsoft near x2 the studios as it would take it just under 40 studios giving Sony and pretty much Nintendo an unfair advantage

Jim Ryan's arguments about this whole drama surrounding ABK don't seem so silly anymore, but people were so blind to believe in Phil's "good guy" words without also looking at the actual reason Sony is fighting it. Surely Sony really seems to have a better view of the market. Microsoft mostly wants to get a lot of content under their eco system, crying that it's good for consumers when there is choice, but that choice is only if you create a Microsoft account, because Bethesda games are no longer coming to PS, so where is that choice?

So far Xbox is the only platform who has actively taken established series or games permanently away from users of other platforms.

I don't like MS's approach to growing the market through consolidation and acquisition of publishers and franchises, but that's not quite true. (Well, if you skip the "permanently" part, at least.) Final Fantasy XVI & Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Star Wars KOTOR Remake, the Marvel Spider-Man and Wolverine characters (developed internally, but still, those used to be platform-agnostic brands,) new series by 3rd Parties like Square's Forespoken and Tecmo Koei's Rise of Ronin, and big indies (which may be timed exclusives) like Stray and Kena Bridge of Spirits, plus Deathloop and Ghostwire in their time.

There's differences in approach. (And from my vantage point, most of these exclusives or timed-exclusives have been smart business decisions on the makers, as they got whatever money and marketing push from Sony but also just fit the audience interests well; same for Xbox titles like The Ascent and Tunic and PSO2 and the Forza Horizon Hot Wheels deals which were right for Xbox gamers and maybe the brands as a whole.) However, it's not the same entertainment market as it was in the past, and new times call for new approaches. I begrudgingly have to admit that MS's acquisition may be the more important business approach in view of Disney and other corporations consolidating brands. MS is planning for what's beyond these single boxes housing all their products.

Phil is getting nervous because if this acquisition fails, he is on the chopping block.

M&A is always difficult but you generally want to get a promotion within Microsoft rather than being ousted.

In his mind he probably thought he would get promoted and maybe Kotick would take over as head of microsoft gaming.

He'll have nothing to show for Microsoft in 3-4 year period, maybe even 5... What was their last hit game? When the supply chain crisis is over, he's going to be in a lot of trouble. He's bet big on GamePass and Cloud Gaming, but neither are ready yet. His internal studios can't cut it and even the PC sales for Bethesda aren't enough to repair the revenue drain spent buying them. Remember 7.5 billion to buy Bethesda...

Xbox has Indiana Jones. Also has a lot of timed and non-timed exclusives from 3rd parties.

Yep. Phil could very well be gone soon. Imagine how bad it looks spending 100 billion dollars and still getting whipped.

That all sounds great except he is currently trying to purchase one of the bigger publishers in the industry to remove many titles from at least one other console. He is no different than Sony, he wants people options to access games as long as it is part of the Xbox ecosystem. Nothing wrong with that, that is his job but people buying into that it is for us gamers are fooling themselves.

Jeez, the amount of salt this guy has.

I don't think Sony wants Microsoft smaller at all, necessarily. For instance, I don't think Sony cares that Nintendo is big and doing their own thing organically. Sony is scared of the continual threat of daddy warbucks Tech spending like Activision/Blizzard and Bethesda, deals that they just cannot realistically accomplish and which will have an immediate impact on THEIR business. Why wouldn't Sony be against Microsoft nabbing their biggest selling title, year in and year out, with a huge risk of an ecosystem shift if that title is free on GamePass?

If Microsoft is smaller, it's because of the failings of Phil's leadership. A platform will not succeed just because you make decent hardware and package together third party content and charge a nickle for it. Those who sacrifice what little time they have to play games want them to be worthy of their time. So why has Phil continued to fail at delivering first party content that would allow Microsoft to get better? The Xbox 360 was HUGE because the leadership team knew that games were important and they managed to deliver them.

Phil needs to take a long hard look in the mirror.

Sure, Xbox is also still playing the "traditional" strategy of making deals with 3rd parties. (Probably the biggest one is something neither of us mentioned, actually: Roblox.) They're not just acquiring everybody...

(On Indy, though, it's unclear if Xbox would have had the Indiana Jones exclusive if they hadn't bought the company making the game.)

In the history of Indiana Jones, the franchise has never been a system seller.

Could this game get the Spider-Man effect that Insomniac had? Sure, but it's a huge leap to think that's what's going to happen. Especially from the makers of Wolfenstein.

Indiana Jones doesn't have the resonance, especially in gaming that Uncharted and Tomb Raider have.

My point is, it's not the flex you think it is.

Yeah he wants it to grow as long as it's on their platforms. Xcloud or Windows. No options for other platforms not controlled by them.

"Sony ruined my childhood"

I was so down the rabbit hole with fighting games during that era that I dont regret my Saturn purchase at all. Being able to swap characters in Xmen vs Street Fighter and Marvel vs Street Fighter was everything.

if this were true, Microsoft would not have bought Bethesda and then immediately pulled any future games from Playstation.

Phil is completely dishonest in his claims to want to give gamers more options. He's already taking them away with his other big acquisitions.

If Sony wants Game X exclusive on PS5 they have to pay Company A, Y Dollars for it
If Microsoft wants Game X exlusive on X Series they have pay Company A, Y+Z dollars for it

Why because Microsoft has to pay for the absence of PlayStation sales where as Sony has to pay for the absence of Xbox sales. As a result it's easier for Sony to afford these deals and easier for them to make these deals and they still make a ton off them from the royalties on the games sales, where microsoft makes the same percentage but a lower volume on the deal because the game sells worse on Xbox.

In other words Microsoft is in a position where they can't compete with 1st party or 3rd party with Sony.

That is where Phil went to Nadella and was like, hey, if we want to have a position in this thing, we need more money to buy a larger position. We need Bethesda and Activision and as a result they've spent upwards of 80 billion dollars to position themselves in a better position to compete with Sony, knowing Sony can't do the same.

The reality is this is both a good deal for the industry and a bad deal for the industry.

If the deal goes through, Sony is going to retaliate, it doesn't stop at Bungie. They'll buy T2, Epic, or Valve. Epic being very difficult with the current ownership of Tencent and Valve being difficult with Newell.

Pot calling kettle black.

Sony didnt go out there and acquire entire publishers like zenimax and activision Mr. Spencer. At worst they continued the same anti-consumer moneyhatting YOU started with timed DLC exclusivity BS with Xbox 360 CoDs and GTA4 DLC. But MS with their war chest should never have been getting outbid for it.

Yep. Phil could very well be gone soon. Imagine how bad it looks spending 100 billion dollars and still getting whipped.

Activision market cap right now is 58 billion.

Imagine spending 70 billion dollars to buy a company that would probably be worth 32 billion post pandemic... and will be worth even less when you take into account the trade off of increased revenue but lost revenue in royalties and lost sales on PS consoles. Let's not get into if Sony puts money into a COD killer.
