Interesting to note that with more PS5 units GT7 PS5 version sold more than PS4... the opposite of the others weeks with little to no PS5 units.

Makes sense I think, with more people picking up a console you have more people buying their first games for it.

To think that if Sony just had 30k consoles ready to sell, they'd sell out in an instant...these charts are painful to read in 2022, lmao.

That should be illegal
Yeah, I've been taking a look at when PS5 stock is available for some friends and I've never seen a pack lower than 700€. That's 200€ more expensive than the retail price.
They are including a couple of Sony first party games, a controller and headphones/chargers.

It's crazy

what is crazy, is the PS5 digital numbers to me. It's like the thing doesn't really exist lol
That's because it pretty much doesn't exist xD.

PS5 Digital has felt like a prolonged paper launch tbh. I'm guessing (well, thinking it would be wise strategy-wise) Sony are looking to produce that version at a cheap enough BOM where they either only break-even or make a profit off it at $399. There is a pathway to do that but IMO it would involve significantly cutting down the internal storage amount and using a large-ish microSD or eMMC storage instead.

Also IIRC 6nm is meant to be cheaper than 7nm right? That's the selling point I believe because transistor density and power consumption have no improvements over 7nm, but the pricing would. So that could be another option for them. Otherwise yeah, right now PS5 Digital is basically a phantom console for winning a marketing bullet point.

Though if they stay in low numbers, the current PS5 Digitals could become collector items years down the line, maybe.

I believe DE is around 30% of the production… or at least it was at launch.

Here in Brasil I found easy to get a DE than disc-one because people tries to F5 the disc-version and forget DE exists… so after disc get sold out in seconds people start to focus in DE… that way you have some time to buy DE.

All the evidence we have now points to the digital version being less than 10 percent of total manufactured units. It's basically a unicorn.

I called this when it launched btw. They have no real motivation to keep making digital systems. It was about launch price perception.

Kirby is selling like crazy. It is even difficult to get, being sold out on Amazon and other major retailers.

This is silly. As long as they have complete control of the digital sales, of course that they have motivation for making digital sistem, even if they lose something in the initial sale.

But all evidence points towards they are making enough quantity to warrent consider it's existance. The highest split previous years we had was maybe 10 percent of total sku sold. Now you would be extremely lucky if it hit 5%

Yes, but this depend from the fact that they are anyway unable to cover for supply demand, so they have no motivation to produce the cheaper model in significant quantity, especially when the disc version is anyway by far the more requested. But this doesn't mean that , under normal circumstances, Sony wouldn't produce enough DE to satisfy demand

There is prrof of your statement that the physical one is the higher requested and thus Sony is making it more available. Are you trying to say a more affordable console is less demanded? Or that it is not actually affordable and consumars as well as Sony know this?

And we are not talking about few million consoles sold. Sony sold more than 20 million console probably, yet it is assumed less than 10 percent are digital and the ratio is shrinking everyday.

About PS5 DE.

It is being produced… I could get a DE in December and it was easier than PS5 disc because everybody wants the disc one… few exceptions like me wanted a DE (I already had a disc one).

Maybe that could change in the future.
But right now there is more demand for Disc than DE so Sony focus on that one.
Plus DE is probably not being sold at profit yet.

I believe DE is around 20-30% of the console sold.
It sold around 5 million units.

Well, for the longest while they might not have, due to the costs associated and I'd suspect they were taking a bigger loss per Digital PS5 than Disc especially at the start, hence the paper launch for Digital.

But with things trending digital, and their refocus on PS+, I won't be surprised if they manage a way to make production of PS5 Digital cheaper and where they can still sell it at $399 without taking a loss or maybe even a slight profit to mirror what they have going on with PS5 Disc models already. I figured to do that, they might want to secure some chip capacity on 6nm (IIRC it's supposed to be a bit cheaper than 7nm), gut the internal SSD storage to just 64 GB - 96 GB, and add in 512 GB or 1 TB (whichever's more economical) microSD storage for longer-term cold storage.

Because if the only difference between Digital and Disc is the UHD Blu-Ray drive, and that shouldn't cost very much (especially for Sony, who manufacture them and doesn't need to pay the licensing fee), then the bottleneck in the BOM pipeline for Digital keeping it from being cheaper on production side is probably the NAND capacity, at least as one of the big reasons.

It's a little hard to believe PS5 has sold that many units. I mean, it's still pretty much impossible to get one in Spain. I've seen no difference from previous weeks when PS5 sold like 75 units. I don't know how many units SONY is currently manufacturing or which country they are shipped to, but clearly it's not Spain.

I got mine in March last year and thank God I did, because if I wanted to buy another I hadn't had a single chance since then. Not even once in more than a year, which is crazy if you ask me. And I follow several groups on Telegram that let you know immediately when there's stock available and where.

Not that I've had so many chances to get a Series X either, to be honest. Just a couple of times, maybe three. More than PS5 no doubt, but still pretty difficult to get. The easiest to get of them all is Series S by quite a margin, I find stock available very often and even below it's official price.

In the US, probably the country with the higher digital to phisical ratio, the preorder of the disk edition were is a 7/1 ratio with the DE.
The most part of the full game sales on Playstation is still on physical discs

These are not even official data! These are survey of 511. Notice that the 72% is a fraction of 15% of those who said were successful (a population of 77).

Again even if we assume the demand is 70 or 80 percent physical, Sony has never sold consoles their consoles as per this ratio and currently are going for something like 95percent. Notice also that in this period, any PS5 is sold so the concept of what are surveys of a tiny population of 225 responders is unnecessary as they can make more digital and would consumers would buy it either way.

Are we going in circles? I already reasoned how the scarcity of consoles is demotivating Sony from producing the cheapest model. And the initial offer of Ps5 actually closely reflect the ratio suggested by that survey : https://www.eurogamer.net/playstati...stock-far-lower-than-standard-ps5-sources-say

In your first article, it states " Among them, 15% said they managed to successfully pre-order a next generation console. Within this group, 72% went for the disc edition of the PS5"

Your second article states that the offering in there retailers was 75% for physical. And as per their own resources, Sony did not clarify why they chooses these 2 models.

So, my rebuttal 8s this this:

First, the first article describe those who were successful in ordering, not their initial choice. If the actual offering was 75 physical, it makes sense that the your first article would have a 72 demand. They are describing a situation after the fact, not the plans or wishes of people.

Second, games sales are mostly digital, least expected at 50%. I think Japan has the highest physical ratio and then USA, and then rest of Europe. With this in mind, it is simple to argue that the split of digital edition should be higher. Again, you are giving me sources when the console was released, I am talking about overall period.

And finally, it does not make since that when you have hardware shortage, that you make your production focusion on the model that has more hardware components.

The article also state the intention of the ones wich weren't able to successfully preorder and the ratio there is a bit more fovorable to the DE, close to 3/1 for disk / diskless. Again, this in the territory that is globally more favourable to the adoption of digital.
I don't care that you are talking about the entire period because my initial post was in response to some who imply that Sony has, from the beginnig, never planned to satisfy demand for the DE.
And you know perfectly well that the main problem is CHIP shortages and the inclusion of blue- disk driver is pretty much inifluent on the production capabilities, so your last argument make zero sense

Which Sony have not even tried to match it all afterwards.

You have not explained why Sony are not producing enough digital edition to match actual demand as all indication shows that the ratio of digital consoles are getting less and less.

It is because they have no incentive to do it. They can happily make the physical ones and grab 100USD more from consumers. They probably ran the math and saw that they are even getting more as many consumers are buying physical console but buying all their games digital. Under these positions, what incentive Does Sony have to make digital console in higher volumes now unless they did not see some financial incentive to do it.

Are you at least reading my replies ? I already conceaded that, given the actual impossibility for Sony to satisfy demand, it decided to concentrate their production on the most expensive model. This hasnothing to do with what were its initial plans or what is going to do once it is finally able to cover market demand.
