I’m surprised it didn’t beat Baldur’s Gate 3 by more despite being on more platforms and being “free” on Gamepass. Have to think Microsoft was hoping for a better reception here.

So far, on a like for like basis it hasn't come close to BG3 on Steam at least. Will have to wait and see if Starfield's numbers shoot up over this coming weekend. BG3 hit 815k and then 875k its first two weekends. Starfield's peak so far is just 269k.

It's not going to come close to BG3 because there are more and cheaper options to get into Starfield. BG3, aside from getting on GOG, was basically a Steam launch exclusive.

Ehh. Game sold 2+ million Premium Edition copies (or Game Pass Premium upgrades) before it was released according to PlayTracker.

So...is it a success?
PlayTracker isn't a reliable source at all.

If they would really have sold 2M+ units day one (not DLCs) it would be ok-ish/good for an average AAA console exclusive, but not for the flagship game of a console released day one on PC.

But who knows, MS doesn't care anymore about game sales, they are more invested now on game subscriptions and GaaS titles. So maybe what they care is very long term revenue of their platform.
